It's just abble to search on the grey areas in the map =] That's why nothing happens for Abreu in Portugal or Brazil. It's possible to zoom the map to better information.

It's just able for the grey areas of the map, the only Iberian reference sems to be Spain.

following the logic of other people´s surnames, by what´s displayed in my world map, my surname should be originary of Argentina xD

Or looking into europe only, From the Navarra and Aragon Crown .Did not see that coming , I thought it would be more represented in western Iberia

When you zoom in, they usually provide an ethnic origin for the surname in the data below the map. Evidently bearers of that surname were more successful in the New World than the old. :thumb001:

My surname, Sulli, is rather uncommon in the U.S. & apparently not very common in Italy. The U.S. distribution is not very informative - although I'm sure most of it consists of my relatives.

http://www.theapricity.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=278&pictureid=2123

http://www.theapricity.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=278&pictureid=2122

Contrarily, my mother's maiden name, Varble, is more common in the U.S. & has a much more informative U.S. distribution:

http://www.theapricity.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=278&pictureid=2125

But it is virtually non-existent in Europe:

http://www.theapricity.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=278&pictureid=2124

This is probably because Varble was altered from an earlier German surname as follows: Wirbel, Wurbel, Varble/Verble. Wirbel today occurs in Germany, Austria, France, & Poland; Wurbel today occurs in France & Switzerland; Verble is exclusive to the U.S.

My surname is most common throughout Scotland, in Northern Ireland and in the North East of England. Outside of the British Isles, it is reasonably common in the US, Canada and Australia, and very common in New Zealand for some reason. I guess a larger number of people of their must have Scottish blood. The exact locations in Britain where my name is my most common are the Scottish Borders (likely because of Clan Scott, a border reiver clan), Perthshire and Northumberland.

My mother's maiden name is also really only a English name, really found only in Britain or in ex-British colonies. In Britain it is common in the South of England, particularly in counties by the Welsh border, which also happens to be the area where my mother is from.

This demonstrates how anglicized names can change so much. The American version of my name showed varied parts of Appalachia, one of them being my birthplace. The Irish version was found mostly in the northwest and west regions of Eire. See what census-takers can do when they misspell names?

My surname is, from what I've gathered, an Americanized-Norwegian surname. There's only a single letter difference, to be honest, and if I had typed in it's original form, Norway would just be dark blue.

Same sit'ation, here. "Earhart" almost doesn't exist in Germany, and is found primarily in states close to where my grandfather was born. I believe it was something like "Ehrhardt" before it was anglicized. I punched that in, and there you go, the stats go from being U.S. centric to Germany centric.

It's quite likely Swedish in origin.
It can be from anywhere, since the word borg is derived from proto-Indo-European. Borg isn't even a common surname in Sweden (not on the top 100), while every second person in Malta seem to bear that surname (I've been in Malta).

I think it's naive at best, it must have a poor logarithmic software, it says mine comes from English and a lot of my surnames are found in New Zealand just because my surname is made of two syllabes quite common among Maori words, but it's just for chance, means nothing in reality, there's no connection, just a fortunate alphabetical bond.

While this map below must be pretty correct instead.

There are several countries without any database at all. For example Macedonia but also some other Slavic nations.

Wtf is this website http://worldnames.publicprofiler.org/Main.aspx ?

The roots of the names are massively wrong, I've put some distant last names :

French name who become english
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/698706001.png (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=698706001.png)

Dutch name who become french
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/811131002.png (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=811131002.png)

French name who become muslim
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/767711003.png (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=767711003.png)

And it's only examples, the majority of names are badly classified.

First and last look Northern & second is maybe Irish?

You should look at this with your surnames. It gives a good breakdown if you click on England or Ireland. Also gives 2014 scores only for nations though.

They're all Northern English surnames with one of them being an English/Scottish name. Just there is a random high incidence of one of the surnames in Tipperary which I find quite odd haha.

Thanks for the link to the other site!

As my surname is translatable to any language I have been playing with its translation in some languages such as Spanish, Catalan, French and when comparing it with the journey of my DNA and there is some consistency. I have tried this technique since in my family there is an oral tradition of a change of surname or maybe it would have been a translation of the original, I can not know.
