Teenagers increasingly use smokeless tobacco known as snus, or Swedish snuff, reveals the latest Adolescent Health and Lifestyle Survey. Exposure to drugs has also risen. On the other hand, alcohol and cigarettes are less popular among youngsters today.

The findings are based on the Adolescent Health and Lifestyle Survey, which the University of Tampere has been conducting every two years since 1997. Some 4,500 youths aged 12-18 participated in the survey.

Among the respondents, 12 percent of 16-year-old boys said that they use snus, while the figure among 18-year-old boys was 14 percent. Girls also turn to the smokeless tobacco more often than before. Adolescents’ first experience with snus also happens earlier than previously.

Snus passes nicotine into the bloodstream through the gums after it has been placed under a person’s lip. The sale of snus is forbidden in Finland and there are strict restrictions on how much snus can be brought into the country from abroad for personal use. Researchers propose tightening these restrictions further.

Cigarettes: used less, but easy for kids to buy

The new survey also featured an increased number of young responders who said that they knew someone who had tried drugs.

On the other hand, the decline in alcohol consumption among youth has continued since 2000.

Smoking among adolescents has also gone down in the last few years. Nonetheless, one in five youths aged 16-18 smokes on a daily basis.

Every third 14-year-old girl and every sixth boy who smoke daily said that they can purchase tobacco on their own, even though the age limit on tobacco sales in Finland is 18.

For this reason, researchers hope that the monitoring of tobacco sales will be stepped up, for example through rewarding the retailers who protect children from tobacco.

Please do. Please place a total ban on snus, cigarettes and alcohol so we can get them with half the price we pay now. And as a nice bonus, we don't have to sponsor a corrupt nanny state.

If they really cared about people's health, they would hardly ban the healthier alternative to cigarettes. But obviously they get too good tax revenue from smokers (or perhaps even another kind of 'revenues' from the tobacco industry).

From my personal observation I can say that in Estonia, it's easier for teens to get snus than it is to get cigarettes from a store. In the high school I went to, snus was more popular than smoking.

The government would get a nice tax profit if snus would be legalized, considering its popularity in countries like Estonia and Finland.

Indeed. And snus doesn't endanger the health of the people nearby like cigarettes do.

Actually a friend of mine who has probably graduated from medical school by now said that it has been studied that snus only causes temporary mouth irritation, not a lasting condition like cigarettes.

Snus is disgusting. The only thing more disgusting than snus is a woman who uses snus.

A tobacco product that's popular in the Nordic region, but selling it is legal only in Scandinavia. In countries like Estonia and Finland it's also very popular, but selling it is illegal, owning it isn't. As I stated before, snus is very easily available in Estonia and more easy to get for most youngsters than cigarettes from a store. That's at least my opinion.

General, the lemon tea-scented one, was my favourite during my snusing days. Nowadays I only use it occasionally.

I seriously doubt that its popularity here can be compared with its popularity in the USA.

Well, that's what my american cousins told me. :) At least they and many others know about it. And well, also saw many people using snus in USA.

Well also USA is bigger than whole Scandinavia, so...no wonder.

The US is so big and diverse that it is most likely a regional thing, perhaps concentrated around the areas with the highest Scandinavian-derived populaces.

You know, beaver, your posts correlate a lot with your actual avatar, that's the only think I understand about you.
