I had a Lovecraft avatar for years on this site. Always considered myself a fan but I haven't read any of his stuff in a long time.

He can be a little wordy and assumes the reader is aware of the references he makes without explaining them. His best work is when he reels himself in.

My favorite story of his is The Shadow Over Innsmouth.

There's a popular misconception that he was a shut-in or a recluse who had difficulty relating to people. In actuality he traveled as much as he was able, was married and carried on many friendships. He never had a lot of money, so that limited what he was able to do. I think that, as well as the nerd culture sort of embracing him, gave rise to that notion.

The pop culture obsession with him has had some recent push back in the age of woke politics, because he was very honest about his feelings about racial groups and miscegenation.

I visited this guy's grave last week in Providence RI. People left flowers, pennies, and a Cthulu plush. I left a nickel.

He apparently didn't enjoy sex though, I agree he wasn't like an autistic shut in, but he was definitely quirky

Apparently his father died of syphilis. Maybe he had some kind of hang-up because of that. From Wikipedia:

"In April 1893, after a psychotic episode in a Chicago hotel, Winfield was committed to Butler Hospital in Providence. Though it is not clear who reported Winfield's prior behavior to the hospital, medical records indicate that he had been "doing and saying strange things at times" for a year before his commitment.[6] Winfield spent five years in Butler before dying in 1898. His death certificate listed the cause of death as general paresis, a term synonymous with late-stage syphilis.[7] Throughout his life, Lovecraft maintained that his father fell into a paralytic state, due to insomnia and being overworked, and remained that way until his death. It is unknown if Lovecraft was simply kept ignorant of his father's illness or if his later remarks were intentionally misleading.[6]"

It's very possible, I just remember his wife saying he said he said he was past his prime and would become uncomfortable even at the mention of sex

http://www.hplovecraft.com/study/articles/hpl-sex.aspx

"Sonia, always had to make the overtures for their sexual relations, however, as she stated to me, HPL had read up on his husbandly duty, and he was more than adequate in his performance."

"...for Sonia made it quite clear to me that HPL knew how to please a woman—she did not say that he pleased her, which obviously he did—but significantly that he knew how to please her."

Kind of odd to be talking about his sex life. I just think that he was more normal than people like to paint him as. He was an extraordinary person in the sense of his creativity, antiquarianism, his interest in science fiction and the weird but we wasn't the bizarre shut-in people present him as.
