Romanian officials on Wednesday told Israel's Prime Minister they would support his stance on Palestine and would not recognise a unilaterally proclamaimed independent Palestinian state.

"Romania believes in a two-state solution reached through negotiations, not through unilateral Palestinian actions," Prime Minister Emil Boc told Israel's Prime Minister, Benyamin Netanyahu in Bucharest.

President Traian Basescu said Romania would continue to be “one of Israel’s best friends” and expressed hopes that economic and political relations between the two countries “will further develop”.

Netanyahu was in Romania as part of a whirlwind trip round foreign capitals, drumming up support for its stance against Palestinian independence.

On Thursday he heads to Bulgaria. Both Romania and Bulgaria are considered among the most friendly countries toward Israel in the EU.
