It seems that Laz, Armenian and Pontic Greek are extremely similar on g25. I can't get a consistent result between my grandmother, my father and myself. Are they all so similar that they're essentially the same thing?

Laz and Pontic Greek are basically identical; Armenians aren't far off. You're better off tracing your family tree for that shit. It's like trying to distinguish between Serb, Bosniak and Montenegrin based purely off a calc, when all 3 overlap considerably.

Unfortunately can't get a family tree that goes back very far. Maybe 1800s is as early as it goes on my Turkish side and everyone has a Turkish name.

If I were you I would look into the history of the specific region of Turkey and even the villages your ancestors come from to see the prevalence of Greek/Laz/Armenian speakers; and I'd also look at the matches you get on 23andme or whatever site you used for testing. Could be the case your ancestors are a simple mix of Pontic/Laz converts which I'm sure is the case for a lot of people from east black sea (I'm assuming that's where your father is from).

Would you rather see my father or grandmas results? I have them both on gedmatch too.

I believe my grandfathers village is mentioned in a book called The Hemshin by Hovann H. Simonian. Pretty much the village was raided by Ottomans.

Hemshin? Congrats, you’ve some Armenian heritage.

probably. most turks from the Pontic region are of Laz and Tzan descent. after the Ottoman conquest of Trebizond many of them were made to convert to Islam. those who stayed Christian joined the Greek orthodox church(after the Georgian church was abolished in the region by Ottomans) and became Hellenized in the 1600s becoming a major part of the Pontic greeks.

So are Pontic Greeks actually Greek or are they Laz who converted to the Greek Orthodox Church?

Pontic Greeks are hellenised locals; they aren't European genetically and score almost entirely West Asian on commercial tests. Funnily enough a lot of them are ignorant and don't even realise this, I saw one guy on reddit score 99.1% West Asian with Turkey as a reference nation, and he was confused as to why he didn't score European with Greece as one.

Ahah. That makes a lot of sense to me now. So when testing populations for Laz vs Pontic Greek vs Armenian, are they going by what the tester says? I'm sure that Laz people in Turkey don't consider themselves Laz, same for Armenians in Turkey.

I guess what I'm asking is, if my dad's dad is from a Hemshin Armenian village, why does he score Laz?

It's peculiar though because we know Greeks from eastern Aegean islands and Western Anatolia settled in the Black Sea area hundreds/thousands of years ago or whatever it was. It wouldn't be possible for Pontic Greeks to be 100% West Asian, similarly to how Greek Cypriots come from an obvious Greek genetic stock, mixed with local ancient mixed Levantine populations

It is hard case. But for Turkic we can exclude Armenian as less probable.
