View Full Version : Which European nation produces the finest athletes?

The Journeyman

I'm of the opinion that the eastern Europeans have an edge, but it may be more due to economic reasons or what seems to be less economic oppportunities = more choose careers in athletics.

The Germans generally rank high in the Olympic games and the World Cup (but lately there have been some foreigners in the mix).

The Finns have good long distance runners; South Slavs have good tennis and probably the best basketball players in Europe.

In MMA and boxing, the leaders tend to be Slavs, usually eastern European. But the Dutch also have great kickboxers.

You probably have a point there. I think the mixe of extreme leptomorphic types of the Dutch with the more robust (generally) ecto/mesomorphic types of African descent produce a formidable body type. But same types can be produced all over Europe, i.e. the Klitschko brothers.

The first European who is not of African descent to run 100 metres in less than 10 seconds.

When Christophe Lemaître ran 9.98sec at the French national championships this month, the headlines read:

First white man to break the 10-second barrier.

"By running 100 metres in 9.98sec Friday 19-year old French sprinter Christophe Lemaître not only set a national record, he became the first person genetically of European origin to officially cover the distance in less than 10 seconds"*

Lemaître's achievement is indeed remarkable:

'Before today, there had been 446 legal sub-10-second performances in the men’s 100m; all of them achieved by 69 different sprinters of African-Caribbean descent and one of Aborigine descent. Lemaître has become the 62nd fastest athlete of all time with his performance of 9.98 at the French Championships.'

He'll probably continue to grow and improve athletically in his early to mid-20's, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him move up in rank in the near future. It seems people of African descent tend to reach their prime earlier than the majority of Europeans.

I saw all the players falkata quoted, so I can say that close to them, Nadal can not be considered among the best. You can only put Nadal in this regard in the number of grand slams. His game is physical, not aggressive, based on the counterattack. Perhaps, if you understand a little more tennis and was least in part, know I'm not defending Federer

What I mean is that Nadal's game, compared to other players you mentioned do not be among the biggest. It can be considered in this ranking by winning 10 grand slams. But he did not have sneakers. It has a terrible volley, a bag weak, is a typical clay court player and defensive. As in recent years the floors are slower, it helps your game. Well, anyone who has played tennis knows that. If it was 10 years ago, Nadal would have never won a Wimbledon title. Took the match between Federer x Sampras, it was only serve and volley and the grass was very fast. Now, you see the grass changing balls.

And I did not say that he uses doping, I suspect, due to their physical and relentless at times he has claimed several injured. Honestly, I never saw anyone running in either a semi-final Australian Open, 5 hours and the next day over 5 hours playing as if nothing happened

the point is that Federer is better than Nadal on the technique and number of titles. But he is 30 and its peak is over, but the discussion has been distorted. What we were addressing was the fact that countries are able to produce many talents in various sports. And his argument was based on very moment, while I get an entire historical cycle.

I would have to say that the eastern Slavs are probably the best fighters in Europe, if not the world. Most of my favorite fighters in K1 or MMA tend to be Slavs. It might come from their tradition in Sambo fighting or Russian fisticuffs. The Germans during WW2 even admitted that when it came to hand to hand fighting in Stalingrad, the Russians were better fighters. I read that from one source though.

One of my favorite fighters, Igor Vovchanchyn nasty little guy from Ukraine

I agree with this not only that but they are rough and determined when playing sports so their physical structure and mentality is prime for sports. I think alot of Irish have good types for playing rough sports as well like rugby and what not. A few of the Slavic countries also have some good athletic types I usually think of Russia for example.

it's easy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-time_Olympic_Games_medal_table

1. Russia and former Soviet Union = 473 gold medals
2. Germany= 336 gold medals
3. Italy= 227
4. France= 218
5. Great Britain= 216
....Attributing all Soviet Union medals to Russia is just plain WRONG since there were many people of different ethnicities competing under the Soviet flag.

I don't watch a lot of sports....but we do watch the Olympics and the World's Strongman/woman competitions if we catch em'

Based on the events I tend to watch:

Gymnastics: Eastern Europe....usually Romania, Russia, or somewhere out of that vicinity

Figure Skating: Eastern Europe, again

ALL Skiing: Scandinavian nations.....especially Norway and Sweden

Diving: The USA:) China's getting pretty good at this sport also....but they don't count as European:biggrin:

As for any Strongman or Strongwoman competition:
Scandinavians and Eastern Europeans....with the occasional American or Brit tossed in for the hell of it.

Sprinting: No one in Europe!:p I believe this would be Kenya.

Long distance running: Scandinavia or the USA

Anything requiring great jumping ability: No one in Europe! Africa for sure:thumb001:

I'm of the opinion that the eastern Europeans have an edge, but it may be more due to economic reasons or what seems to be less economic oppportunities = more choose careers in athletics.

The Germans generally rank high in the Olympic games and the World Cup (but lately there have been some foreigners in the mix).

The Finns have good long distance runners; South Slavs have good tennis and probably the best basketball players in Europe.

In MMA and boxing, the leaders tend to be Slavs, usually eastern European. But the Dutch also have great kickboxers.

This seem to me to be true in alot of cases because when watching sports on TV these always the ones to dominate the sports and as a British of French origins I would agree.

Slavs, I believe. I vote Russia.

Generally Slavs are of the most top sportsmen.

Djokovic made Nadal his bitch so no, Spain is definitely not #1 and it will fall even farther when Serbia wins the Eurocup next year and the World cup in 2014. :D

Totally agree with all that.

It's funny when someone makes a thread and normally states honest facts suddenly somebody else (like a Spaniard) has to always assert themselves to be better so they can be excepted as equals just because someone innocently says his genuine facts.

Funny eh.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Hungary.

Hungary has participated in 25 Olympic games, and out of those only 6 times we were not in the top 10.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungary_at_the_Olympics#Medal_tables_by_Games

Back in 1936 for example, we were third, only behind America and Nazi Germany, which is a good place to be I think.
In the 2012 Olympics, we came 9th, which was a surprise to us since there were many funding cuts due to the economy.

All the Olympics combined, Hungary is 8th. The countries above us are Germany, Italy,China, France, Great Britain, Soviet Union, USA. Now compare the population, sports funding, etc differences :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-time_Olympic_Games_medal_count

We are a country of 10 million, from which about a 700k to million are gypsies, who unlike blacks arent even good at any sports :(

From the Olympic games metal table you can see that USA, Russia and Germany are leading by far.
USA have won a combined total of 2652, Russia of 1836 and Germany 1663. Great Britain, the next nation only has 801.
Germany also is leader in the Olympic Winter Games, 2nd is Russia and 3d is surprisingly Norway.

And how many American gold medalists were black? How many Russian or USSR gold medalists were non Russian?

That is the advantage of states like Russia, China, USA, Germany, huge population, lots of choice, lots of funding for propaganda reasons.

That's right, so the number of medals per capita could be an indicator of which nation has the best athletes per average.
But other factors would also have to be considered: So for example some countries spend much more money than other countries in sports. The countries of the former Eastern Bloc made a huge effort to gain medals, too (Also in Germany: Eastern Germany gained a lot more medals than Western Germany and the Soviet Union also won a lot of medals)
