View Full Version : Is the P37 SNP-Pack from FTDNA worth it?

So my FTDNA Y-37 results came back and they only show P37 as my Haplogroup which is a big ass clade that doesnt say much about me. I then searched for Projects to join so that I maybe can find out a bit more about myself which then resulted in reading the I2-Project page which stated that its not worth it to buy the P37 SNP-Pack for Dinaric-South that I eventually belong to.
Can someone who bought the test tell me what they have meant with that?
Ayetooey might know more about this since he also did the ftdna test and is I2. Where are your matches from?

Got 2 exact Y-25 matches from Poland and Bulgaria and 2 Y-37 Step 1 matches from Bulgaria and Belarus. Most of my matches are from Poland, Russia and Ukraine but that still might be only the case because there are more testers from these areas than from Bosnia and Croatia which come after those countries in my case.

I'm surprised they told you it isn't worth it. Whats your str values on DYS448 and DYS 449?

Saying that; I just checked my last email from them. They didn't reccomend the I-P37 test for me either, since many snps in I2-PH908 (Din South) are not included in it. So it's better to go for individual SNP tests or big Y. Or a str value upgrade to see if you get a match whos done big Y.

DYS448: 19
DYS449: 29
Maybe Ill try an individual pack, thanks for the answer.

With those str results you are PH908 then, and would be a branch within that if you were to test snps. I'm guessing they would suggest the PH908 SNP test; but if you wanted to find your deepest possibly branch it would be big Y (I think) that's the stage I'm at at least (and can't afford).
Have you considered doing the I2 superclade panel at YSEQ?

Need to look into that when i have time, thanks to you as well.

Thats already further down the clade I knew. Thank you very much!

I was just looking into YSEQ and it would be this Panal he would want I think; since this one specifically tests under I2-Din branches like S17250 and CTS10228. http://www.yseq.net/product_info.php?products_id=11788
I might look into it myself actually so thanks for mentioning it; 88 USD is preferable to the 400 USD that big Y costs atm lol.
You are Din-S (PH908) for sure, but it has many subbranches under it, best is to try individual SNP testing with FTDNA or look into yseq.
Dont forget to join Croatian Y DNA project on FTDNA, it needs every sample they can get and you may find some close matches there.

Already sent them an E-Mail. :thumb001:

I've tested there myself and can't recommend it enough. Very good and fast service (and delivery) and they continously add new SNPs as they appear. I've done the U152 panel and then also bought another SNP test after it appeared later.
Also, I'm also considering just buying the Nebula full genome test when it becomes available in Europe rather than the Big Y.

As said in another thread, some PH908 sub-branches like the Y84307 and BY97555/Y51673 are only based on two samples and hence have several defining SNPs until comes another sample and differentiates them in more sub-sub-branches and then the sub-branch will have fewer or perhaps only one defining SNP. What is the point of testing only one SNP Y84307 when are not tested six other SNPs BY87256, Y93273, Y101738, Y106341, Y107377, Y112550 (YSeq shop (https://www.yseq.net/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=Y93273+or+Y101 738+or+Y106341+or+Y107377+or+Y112550+or+Y84307+or+ BY87256)) or as such testing only SNP Y51673 when are not tested four other SNPs BY97555, BY191932, Y153037, Y160364 (YSeq shop (https://www.yseq.net/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=Y51673+or+BY97 555+or+BY191932+or+Y153037+or+Y160364))? Doesn't it mean you don't belong to this sub-branch, but only to this one specific SNP which is currently used to define the sub-branch?
And yet again, one SNP is not cheap at YSEQ, $18, so the I2a-M423 Panel pack is definitely worth it at $88, but again, on the long run, if you don't choose SNPs carefully or have no other choice won't you come near the price of Big Y at some point?

Ive been contacted by someone who sent me a picture from FTDNA that showed that he is an exact Y-37 match with the Haplogroup "Y4460". So maybe im not Dinaric South after all. Would also fit the many Eastern European, non Balkan matches i have.
