Bengalis are from Bangladesh and Indian state of West Bengal.

They pretty much score like east/se asian shifted UP/Bihari folks from north india. Decent amount of Euro showing up indicating indo aryan/steppe expansion as well.

Bengalis seem to have good mix of both Northeast and Southeast Asian so thats interesting. Makes sense I guess given that neighboring northeast indian, burmese populations have equal mix of both types of asian ancestry and tibetan populations could bring in extra Northeast asian as well in some individuals.

I wonder if Muhammad Yunus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Yunus) would fit in that range
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fe/Muhammad_Yunus_at_Chittagong_Collegiate_School.JPG

The third of nine children,[8] Yunus was born on 28 June 1940 to a Bengali Muslim family in the village of Bathua, by the Kaptai road in Hathazari, Chittagong in the Bengal Presidency of the British Raj, present Bangladesh.[9][10] His father was Hazi Dula Mia Shoudagar, a jeweler, and his mother was Sufia Khatun. His early childhood was spent in the village. In 1944, his family moved to the city of Chittagong, and he moved from his village school to Lamabazar Primary School.
Chittagong Division is in the southeast of Bangladesh.

Muhammad Yunus' daughter Monica Yunus is half Russian. Her husband is white and their son looks a lot like his father. I'd like to see his DNA results

The daughter looks quite east asian. East asian is noticeable among both russians and bengalis hence the daughter looks decently mongoloid shifted. However, pheno doesnt have to equal geno haha as we saw with iriselene's results today.

Here's one sample from Chittagong on harappa spreadsheet. I dont have any kit for this, but it was one of the samples used and this is the most East asian shifted bengali sample and the only one from chittagong. Gets 38% Mongoloid lol. They seem to have heavy admix from khasis in the northeast indian state of Meghalaya.

I don't think Muhammad Yunus is that mongoloid. More likely 15 percent or so.

I'm also half Russian(and German) and half Bangladeshi, I am pretty white(whiter than most Southern Europeans given I don't stay under the sun a lot) but have almost black hair and very very dark eyes, while my sister is a bit lighter(like you would expect), this was the case since childhood as well.

No, son, if you're half Bengali, you can't be white because genetically you aren't. Look at the results above, even if you're half that, you're still far from ethnic Europeans. That's not to say you can't be light-skinned. But even Gypsies are less South Indian than you.

By white I was obviously talking about skin. In any case at least socially speaking genetics don't really matter if no one notices it.

Muslim Bangladeshi? Any specific caste/subgroup?
Bengalis seem to be around 40% Ancient South Indian (G25 data) or whatever it's called but they also have a decent amount of Mongoloid. They're more mixed than Northern Indians.

Muslim Bangladeshi? Any specific caste/subgroup?
Bengalis seem to be around 40% Ancient South Indian (G25 data) or whatever it's called but they also have a decent amount of Mongoloid. They're more mixed than Northern Indians.
Yes muslim from a little east of Dhaka(just a bit), seemingly a line of peasants though maybe a bit more well off ones(not completely sure)

Wot? Pashtuns have only 30%? And Bengalis are so close to them? If that's true it seems the Aryan migration must have some very quick event to have such an homogeneous impact on the region, especially considering subsequent Iranian influence the Upper Ganges and Indus region received.

Pashtuns can be up to 35%. Registan (Rukha on Anthrogenica) is 35% Sintashta on G25, Mingle is 30%, Pamiri Tajiks are 45-55%. That's where I'm pulling the numbers from. I think Punjabi Jats are 30+% Steppe. Bengali Brahmins must surely be about 20%.

Steppe does NOT equal North European, mind you.

It depends on the components ised. If we use bmac populations (dhzarkutan, gonur) along with sinthashta mlba, then bengali muslims will get 10% steppe, bengali brahmins around 20%, and pashtuns/punjabi jats will get 25-30% steppe. Highest steppe would be among tajiks at 45%. Followed by haryana rors at 35-40%. Im on my phone rn but ill post the reaults later in the day from G25

Here's the bronze age breakdown for south and south-central asians.

Components
SIS BA1 - Bronze age sample east iran (proxy for Iranian farmer type pull. Best fit for desis)
LAO BA - southeast asian native pull ( shows up among indian tribals, northeast indians, and bengalis)
Mongol Hovsgol BA - east asian/siberian type pull.
Sintashta MLBA - steppe. highest among tajiks at 43% but next highest is among haryana rors at 39%. Jats and pashtuns get 30% and 28% respectively. Bengali muslims and brahmins get 12% and 23% respectively.
AASI NW/S - AASI
Gonur and Dzh - BMAC. most south asian populations dont get it. it ony shows up among the fringe ones like kalash, burusho, and the south-central asians like pashtuns and tajiks. Even balochis dont have it so all their iranian component is of similar source as the ones that spread to south asia.

Btw, I'm the Reddy sample in the run below. I'm south indian mid caste. I get around 49% SISBA3 and 43% AASI. No BMAC or mongol

I mean the Iranian farmer component is roughly similar among all upper and middle castes of india actually. Bengalis get a bit less but north or south indians are about the same. The major differences between different groups occurs with AASI and Steppe components. Punjabi jats for example get 22.5% more steppe than me and I get roughly the same amount of AASI in addition compared to Jats.

Also I wonder, how likely is it for some relevant amount of East Eurasian admixture in the Bengali genome to have come from the Turko-Mongol warriors?

In Bengalis case, I think the East asian might have come from neighboring burmese, northeast indian, and tibetan populations. I cant imagine bengalis having much turkic influence or most indians for that matter. It could also be some ANE type pull which could spill from the steppe or Iranian components. Mongol in northern pakistani gorups like burushos, pashtuns, and the tajiks get it from the mongol invasions. Kashmiris, punjabis, etc most likely get it form neighboring tibetan populations. kashmris atleast.

steppe folks are diverse. The Karasuk/scythians might have had some east asina pull, but the sintashta people that migrated to south asia didn't have any noticeable mongoloid pull. They are mostly euro with some iranian farmer mixed in. steppe and mongol populations are different.

By Eastern Russians, I'm assuming you mean Siberians? Or maybe turkic groups like tatars, etc. Neither of them are predominantly steppe, though they do have steppe mixed in from modern russians or ancient admix, similar to south asians.

By Russians people usually mean ethnic i.e. Slavic/European Russians, not ethnic minorities from Siberia and the Caucasus. The people you mean are Siberians. Siberia is majority ethnic Russian too except for a few places like Tuva, Yakutia, Chukotka, etc.

In Bengalis it's not Turco-Mongol for sure, but rather Southeast Asian or something of that kind.
I recommend you order an Ancestry DNA or MyHeritage kit and explore your own heritage. It costs like 50-60 euros during sales which is fairly cheap.

Possible, but he don't look like one. Boy is very light skinned with Asiatic eye shape, looks bit mongoloid.

His father is very dark like typical Southern Indian. His all family looks very Indic/brown except mother who has SE Asian features, I guess boy took after grandma.

His mother despite being overwhelmingly Croat in ancestry looks very Jewish.

We made sure boy will be baptised in Catholic church and raised as Croatian :)

Yes it makes sense that those populations are the source of the East Eurasian dna, but at same time the East Bengal region was a frontier zone that was tamed during the rule of those Turkic dynasties so I was wondering if there could be some sort of pocket of influence there given the Islamization of the region and its previous lower population density compared to the core Hindu areas.

In Bengalis it's not Turco-Mongol for sure, but rather Southeast Asian or something of that kind.
I recommend you order an Ancestry DNA or MyHeritage kit and explore your own heritage. It costs like 50-60 euros during sales which is fairly cheap.
I wasn't suggesting it was mostly Turkic, rather than some of it could be, given the particular religious and demographic development during the rule of those dynasties. Also the question was not for me, rather more general. I do plan on taking a test but it would be long-term, one thing I'm particularly interested in is which modern/ancient population I would match the closest.

@Thambi, can you make a new Bangladeshi average for Dodecad K12b?

Some Gujaratis look predominantly Iran Neo + Steppe, not AASI. Like the Home Secretary from the Boris Johnson cabinet Priti Patel. She comes from a Uganda Indian family
https://www.openaccessgovernment.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/priti.jpg
https://static.independent.co.uk/s3fs-public/thumbnails/image/2017/03/14/14/priti-patel-cabinet.jpg?w968h681

From her last name she's a Patidar/Patel (merchant, landlord class), a lot of them went to Eastern Africa during colonial times and became very wealthy then fled to the UK when Ugandans kicked them out. They are actually distinguished from other Gujaratis on 23andMe

My friend (Croat with minor Ashkenazi Jewish) has a child with Slyheti muslim from NE Bangladesh.

Where do you think their boy may plot ? She is thinking about DNA testing him.

My best friend also has a half Bengali child. I believe the mum is Sylheti

Thambi, I think there exists caste groups as separate genetic community among Hindu Bengalis rather than being genetically homogeneous?

I did some qpAdm runs earlier this year for some of the Banglas from the 1000 Genomes dataset.

This is BEB 3598

160238 SNPs (85.15%)

S Indian 49.41
Baloch 26.63
NE Asian 7.99
SE Asian 6.31
NE Euro 5.99
Caucasian 1.41
Siberian 0.9
Papuan 0.77
SW Asian 0.23
Mediterranean 0.2
American 0.16

here are his qpAdm results

SAHG: 37.1%

Iran_N, with some Anatolian stuff: 29.4%

Steppe: 16.1%

Asian: 17.4%

On different G25 calculators, his SAHG/AASI is like 45% and his Asian is at 10% compared to 37% SAHG and 17% Asian on qpAdm. I have noticed that G25 is not good at detecting that East Asian/AASI split like qpAdm.

Not exactly GEDmatch but thread relevant. https://www.brownpundits.com/2024/10/04/bengalis-are-totally-burmese/#comments

It seems the Asian contribution in Banglas wasn't really from the Burmese as the actual "Tibetan" or rather generally Tibetic/Himalayan input is greater as a ratio than it is in the Burmese, as in, ratio wise, they have less Tibetan-stuff. It's significant enough it seems.

I discovered this a while back on my own with my amateur models but seems like it was legit.

I match most of these kids not all of them but most of them and the first one I match the most and it's only .39% and I think it might have all come in one piece on chromosome 3 I was very surprised but when I research the ends of my chromosomes I find a very very different ethnic breakdown and they say those are some of your most ancient pieces that are fighting to stay part of your genetic inheritance so if you can research isolate the last cMorgan across all your 22 chromosomes and then you can do it for the first million pieces against all 22 and it's rather interesting you can break it down by chromosome looking at the first and last and comparing them

Anyway I think this South Asian stuff I get might come through the pashtun people picking up some Indian genetics that may have originated with the Cochin Jews on some line in my family because I was told recently by a guy from Pakistan that the pashtun people are Jews and I didn't know that they were identified that way I thought it was more mixture of different people groups but I get a large chunk of that on some calculators sometimes 9% on a two-way I'll get like Norwegian or Danish and pashtun and all the rest of it would be Nordic and then on another two-way I get more Northwest and Eastern I get something Irish 75% Ukrainian 25%. So there's some sort of a mixture of that going on but it's nice to check the kits thank you I appreciate it
