...how different do you think the world would be now?
Discuss.

Alaska would suck today.

Would've made the USSR an even greater threat in the Cold war due to another point of proximity.

The guys running away from their past would have to run to different state then. Alaska is like British Australia.

Canada was founded by the French, who built lower Canada, which is Canada from the East Coast to about Quebec down the St. Lawrence River. It was then traded to the English, who developed upper Canada more. NW Europeans mostly populated the west.

Alaska was nothing more than a Russian corrective colony turned strip mine.

If USA didn't buy Alaska, then it would have been conquered from Russia by the British (who controlled Canada back then). Then once Canada gained independence from the UK, it would have inherited Alaska.

1. Either it becomes part of the USSR meaning it becomes an extension of Siberia.

2. The Russian whites flee there and it becomes Russian Taiwan.

Alaska has a lot of oil, this made it so important that when the Japanese were running out of oil in WWII they invaded the Aleutian islands. In fucking winter. So obviously Alaska has some use. Also its huge, larger than France and Germany combined. If the Russians never sold it (which is actually quite realistic for the US to never consider buying it) it would've been important regardless. Russians would probably coexist with the natives as they did when they ruled Alaska. In below is a video about the worldview and philosophy of St. Innocent of Alaska.

There had been a war between the USA and Russia at one point, that for sure.

Russian sold Alaska mainly because they weren't able to defend it if a war took place. So they would probably loose it far before cold war took place.

Even if russian would have keep alaska, it's not easy to colonyze the place. It might even be a burden for russia (back in the time) and create more problems than opportunity.

Russia would probably get attacked by the Anglosphere at some point.

During the Russian Revolution, Alaska would have declared independence from the Russian Empire to become the "Republic of New Archangel". Afterward, there would have been an invasion by the Reds, sort of like the Chinese control of Taiwan. America would have definitely gotten into a hot war with the USSR.

you can use Google maps and compare (Alaska vs. Kamchatka) how it would looks like, google street view, this Russian (or Ukrainian - don't remember) did that already

Don't be daft. Alternate history doesn't beckon asymmetric discussion.

Kamchatka hasn´t oil, that´s not a fair comparasion, you should compare Alaska with Norway.

If (unlikely) in 1918 Alaska still were Russian, during Russian civil war it would become an easy target for a foregn military intervention. Much more easy than other parts of Russia which were actually temporarily occupied in that time.
