European populations display low genetic differentiation as the result of long-term blending of their ancient founding ancestries. However, it is unclear how the combination of ancient ancestries related to early foragers, Neolithic farmers, and Bronze Age nomadic pastoralists can explain the distribution of genetic variation across Europe. Populations in natural crossroads like the Italian peninsula are expected to recapitulate the continental diversity, but have been systematically understudied. Here, we characterize the ancestry profiles of Italian populations using a genome-wide dataset representative of modern and ancient samples from across Italy, Europe, and the rest of the world. Italian genomes capture several ancient signatures, including a non–steppe contribution derived ultimately from the Caucasus. Differences in ancestry composition, as the result of migration and admixture, have generated in Italy the largest degree of population structure detected so far in the continent, as well as shaping the amount of Neanderthal DNA in modern-day populations.

Cool they provided public samples for every Italian region. I think only Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna are lacking. But I had them from elswhere...
I will add Umbria, Molise and Basilicata to LM Genetics spreadsheet. And update older means too.

I don't know to what regions correspond : "South Italian1", "South Italian2" etc.

It seems also that the samples are not new ones but from Parolo, Fiorito etc.

Anyway it's an interesting study but I do think that there is a lot of genetical variation even in south italy because of the isolation and the many people that came here. In fact Fiorito showed that there is not much of substructure (based on his samples), I think what we need it's more samples. We can talk about Puglia that is very poorly studied, the same with inland Campania or northern Calabria.

I heard he banned himself for continuous spamming this section by Sicilian Gedmatch oracles combined with Sicilian nightclubs images:)

Italians don't like him because he is an American that is only half Sicilian by ancestry and even his Sicilian father was born in the US and speaks English, so Sikel is basically not Italian culturally (don't tell me about pizza and pasta, I eat it too without being Italian). He also refuses to discuss Italians north of Naples while associating Southern Italy with Middle Eastern populations.

He was continuously spamming his GEDMATCH results with the peculiar ability to search the best outliers that will prove that southern italian are basically "middle easterners speaking italian"

Haha, exactly. I remember a Calabrian (?) with a whopping 10% Red Sea on Eurogenes K15. If you don't believe, I will find it later, not tonight.

Yeah I have seen this, a person said that he even had the same amount of Red sea that a lebanese. (10%)

We don't know if his gedmatch kits were from full italian or from people that were mixed with other ethnicities. The red-sea component in italians is NEVER as high as 10%, I have seen sicilians (that are the european population that have the most Red Sea) at 8%, other southern italians vary between very low percentages to 6/6,5%.

Incredibly middle-east shifted, he must be of recent jewish origin (maybe his family doesn't know), they were massive conversions in Reggio and Catanzaro regions (mainly coastal areas).
