 LOL, I know that just by reading the title, you feel the urge to laugh uncontrollably, but please don't! :(

Can this happen? Someone close to me seems to be literally addicted to Coca-cola, he drinks 1-2lt per day, and he can't live without it...

He needs it to 'digest food', he needs it to 'ease his stomach', he needs it 'because he feels a bad taste in his mouth'...anyway he makes all kinds of excuses to drink it, and I am worried as this is starting to become pathological... Just think of the health implications... :(

You can become addicted to anything. I'm addicted to coffee.

The phosphoric acid in Coca Cola actually does help you digest, and the caffeine is addicting. So, probably.

He does sound like he's addicted so making excuses means he's probably in denial. However, I find that Coke can ease the stomach somewhat especially when one's feeling bloated, but excessive amounts would probably be counter productive.

There is no other chemical in Cola you can get addicted than coffeine, and that's something that one should not be addicted to as your body makes it own substance for it. He just like Cola, like me:)

Addiction is not always chemical, it is psychological as well. What chemical can gamblers be addicted to?

Heh, funny you should mention that...

The couple that I am flatting with told me that when they first met, the bloke in question would drink several litres of Coca Cola a day. Not Pepsi or any other brand, only ever Coke.

He's toned down a fair bit over the years (apparently), now I think he'd drink only about a 1.5L bottle, on average, per day. This is excluding any mixers for alcohol :p

I've told him time and time again to think about what it's doing to his insides. Coke can strip grease so I am told! It really can't be good for him. However, he's addicted.

At one point in my life I was addicted to Mountain Dew. I would drink it continuously... I'm still quite partial to it actually, even though I try to stick away from soft drinks :)

The most notable example of coca-cola addiction is to be found with Paolo Di Canio. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paolo_Di_Canio)
I can't seem to find an excerpt of his autobiography online, or find a relevant article, but his addiction to the substance was very bad at one stage.

Dunno if this is true, but I've heard that the highway-cop carry 4 gallons of coke in the back of their car to wash away blood from the streets after an accident...

Probably the worst risk is diabetes. Coke is also very bad for your teeth in the long run. He should knock this off, no question about it.

Coke is basically liquid sugar, which can be (or rather it is) addictive.

There is an ayurvedic recommendation for people who crave sweets, and I think that they are told to eat more bitter and astringent flavours...

Google that? My power is just going here, the electricity just went off...

He is on a stimulant-go-round and he needs to break it by eating some opposite flavours, but also having something sweet with every meal, to satisfy his palate.

I've heard a rumor that some major casinos coat their poker chips and handles of slot machines with crack.

Coke sucks! Pepsi rules!

Soooooo ecstatic that Pepsi won the contract with my college of Coca-Cola!

Coke is okay but is flat to me, Pepsi is better and it has that burn. :D

I've never been addicted to caffeine really. I've had friends say they were addicted to Sun-Drop.... Sun-Drop is to syrupy to me. I mostly enjoy tea and water over cokes but after a while of not drinking any cokes I will get a taste for one. I have known people who never drank water and I don't understand, its the only thing that really cures thirst to me. :)

You can become addicted to coke because of the Caffine in it. I am addicted to coffee and get severe headaches or even migranes without it. Coke can do the same to you. I have even attempted to quit and I am back to about 2 cups a day but that is all I can stand. I tried to quit altogether and my body refuses to cooperate.:D

They are taking away all of the Coca-Cola machines here on campus (PepsiCo won the bid this time!).

I told one of the Coca-Cola mover dudes today "I have been waiting for the moment for 4 years" as I held the door open for him....

He looked at me like I was an asshole.

It felt great. :thumb001:

Modern, processed soft drinks are basically poison to our bodies! The soda companies knowingly put in chemicals in their products which cause us to be addicted to them. They have a lot of antinutrients that strip your bones of minerals. Here is an article of interest.

http://www.westonaprice.org/modernfood/soft.html

I've done some research, and if you want to kick the soda habit, it's very hard, but worth it. Fermented beverages like natural, homemade ginger beer, kombucha, kvass, and other lacto-fermented beverages are very healthy, and are very tasty, once you develop the palate for the probiotic rich, and tart, sour flavors of these nourishing drinks. Young coconut water kefir is another very important thing to have, and you can make it yourself, with three green coconuts, and some kefir grains. And it does taste good too.

They did an episode on 'coke as a grease stripper' or whatever on Mythbusters and it turned out to be BS.

I need caffeine since I'm an insomniac and I don't like coffee, so coke/pepsi/mt dew it is. I don't really get the people who really like coke and hate pepsi or vice versa, they aren't that different really. Coke also finally has a decent competitor to Mt. Dew with 'Vault'. Surge was awful, and Mellow Yellow wasn't that great either.

Most of the generic colas are pretty nasty though.

A liter of coke isn't that much, even 2 liters isn't when you think about how many people drink more than 4 pints of beer per day.

I'm not addicted to coke. It's okay in small quantity, or mixed with bad whiskey. I'm disgusted by the large coke at Mac Donalds, take a look at the movie "Supersize Me"...

Corn syrup (the secondary ingrediant in most 'soft drinks') has been shown to be as addictive as Heroin.

I'm addiced to, "Figi" water, myself.

Although your body does make caffeine, when you over take any sort of natural substance your body will stop making and will become reliant on you bringing in the substance. The same is true with speed and other methamphetamine because it makes more dopamine so your body will stop making it.
