I don't see a problem tbh. Native Americans may have different perspectives when compared with Eurocentric societies on what constitute membership on their societies. If the guy can prove documented Cherokee ancestry he might be considered Cherokee.

The more I read about anthropology (the true, academic one, not the farce they call anthropology here) more I realize that modern perceptions of ethnicity are flawed by colonialism bias and a certain kind of eurocentrism that came to exist with it... I'd even say colonialism was the main historical development of the last 500 years, for good or bad. Even societies with no colonial experience (either as colonizers or colonized) share the outlook that came to be with colonialism.

It seems that in some US's states, any people who is 1/16 indigenous can see considered native-american.
