What do you think?

Classic or Contemporary?

It depends on the type- Germans have the best marches, Iberians have the best dances, the USSR had the best hymns, etc.

Overall, I personally enjoy German music the most,

Greece has the best music. A lot of their modern music has preserved old elements of traditional Greek music. It's usually upbeat; the instrumentation (both percussion and bouzouki, etc.) is soulful and complex.
I feel that while a lot of Sicilian music (including traditional music) has borrowed heavily from Western European music (Germano-Celtic) Greek music has preserved its East Med musical identity for the most part and also absorbed other influences which complement it.
I'm going to be crucified for saying this, but I think the best music in Northern/Central/Western Europe (I'm not including Iberia in this) was made by Romani people.. :lol:
Iberia also has a great musical tradition, especially the south, and Romani did make a contribution to this, though unlike other parts of "Western Europe" I think the natives made a lot of great music.

Germany started to suck in modern times I think.
In the 18th and 19th century, one spoke of "German hegemony in music".
And it was said "from all kind of arts, music is the most German one".

An American magazine made a list of the 100 most important componistsof the last 1000 years and there had been 7 guys from German speaking countries in the top 10. ;)

But where are the German superstars of the last 50 years?
Did every German who possessed musicmaker DNA die in the war?

Did all the survivors migrate to the USA?

Without wanting to sound biased, but the UK is dominant in quality popular music in Europe. Not only does it travel well throughout Europe, but also the rest of the world. Few countries can match Britain's originality, except for the US.

For contemporary I have to say England, just for springing the likes of Bowie.

For classical, Germany. No personal bias.

Mine was a traditional or folk response. I'll keep to it.

Hard one. I'd say Norway, the United Kingdom and Germany are three really important countries when it comes to music. My favourite music is Norwegian music, though. I do really like many bands from the UK, but we're only allowed to vote for one country, so I voted for Norge.:)

Polls like these, with state-countries instead of areas, are a bit senseless because you can't simply compare, say, Montenegro with Germany or Russia. People are always going to vote for the big countries if only because a bigger demographic size produces more musicians and they are better known.

My order of preference when it comes to folk music:

* West Med (Catalan, Italian)
* Basco-Pyrenean
* Celto-Atlantic (British Isles, NW Iberia, Brittany)
* Russian
* Portuguese
* Balkan
* Southern Spanish
* Central European

For medieval and Baroque music, the whole South-West of Europe (centering in Occitania/Catalonia, with branches into inland Iberia, northern France/England and Tuscany).

When it comes to Classical music, Central Europe comes first (Germans, Austrians, Hungarians).

In pop-rock music, the British Isles come first by far, followed by pop-rock bands from a high diversity of countries from all Europe. For hard rock, Northern Europe. For ballads and singer-songwriters, Southern Europe. For choirs, Eastern Europe.

Netherland. UK and germany have good music too.

Music is now evolving through electronic music, especially new age, and overcoat trance.

In trance music, Dutchs are clearly the best. Although my favorite is Slovenian.

Yes, but more than 1,000 years of European music can't be reduced to the last 40, specially when the origin of pop-rock music is partly alien to Europe. ;)

Italian of course, we've got tons of classical music and modern too, we just lack rock, if compared to England and USA, because the language hardly allowed itself to grt "musicated" (I mean translate words into music) in tune with a rock melody, while English for instance is full of short words so you can musicate basically anything you want to.

We had and still have (a little bit less since the golden age was the 60s-70s) a lot of cantautori (Singers-songwriters) who, had they've been born in UK/USA, would have became world top stars while instead today they are known only here and that's a pity I can't stand.

Once for all Lucio Dalla, thou I don't even know wether teens would think of him as "boring" :mad:

Hans Zimmer is just awesome. He's one of the reasons for Pirates of the Caribbean being such an amazing tittle. His music really counts to create the movie's athmosphere! Davy Jone's and The Kraken's themes are classics for me.
