In June 2011, 11.4 per cent of economically active Bulgarians were out of work, compared to 10.1 per cent one year earlier.

Greece is the only country in the EU to register a worsening situation in its labour market, with unemployment levels now standing at 15%.

At the other end of the spectrum, Austria recoded its lowest levels of unemployment at 4 per cent. It was followed by the Netherlands with 4.1 per cent of working age people unemployed and Luxembourg with 4.5 per cent.

The highest rates of unemployment were found in Spain, where 21 per cent of the working age population was out of work, followed by Lithuania and Latvia with 16.3 per cent and 16.2 per cent unemployed during the first quarter of 2011 respectively.

Estonia, Latvia and Hungary all reported reductions in unemployment with the proportion of people unemployed falling 5 per cent, 3.7 per cent and 1.4 per cent in these countries respectively.

Eurostat estimates that 22 million people were unemployed in the EU in June 2011, down by 706 000 on the year.
