Bardzo szybko, bo już w początkach pierwszej połowy XVII wieku, Szkoci zdominowali tarnowski handel. Stanowili wówczas aż połowę wszystkich kupców operujących w mieście. Miejscowi zaczęli ich nazywać "szotami", później zaś słowem "szot" zaczęto określać wszystkich handlarzy czy domokrążców.
