Aside from the great capitals (Berlin, Paris, Rome, Madrid, London, Vienna etc), there are some vibrant, historical towns that foreign visitors often overlook but are delighted to discover. There are lively cafés as well as stunning architecture. Generally, they are university towns; many were capitals of small countries absorbed into larger ones. Which are your favorites?

A few to get this rolling: Dresden, Olomouc, Wroclaw, Toulouse.
