My dear, sweet Kessie kitty 5 years ago in her prime...making sure I did not float away while napping.

My dear, sweet Kessie today. We are performing hospice care as she has terminal intestinal lymphoma.

Kessie is fading pretty fast, would only eat a few mouthfuls of people tuna today.

But, we had her outside for awhile in the warmth, light and breeze. Wasn't too lively, but she seemed happy; chewed a little grass, alerted on a bird, lay in the sun...sweet little cat-girl, we're going to miss you.

I bought this T-shirt a few days ago, not only is it cute, but it's also for a great cause, since the money paid for it goes uncut to a cat foundation that helps homeless cats :)

I am sory to hear your cat is sick, at least as you say she is happy and that matters the most...

Unfortunately, Kessie' illness was terminal and we gave her as many good days as we could.

Last Sunday it was apparent that she was both feeling uncomfortable and was saying her goodbyes.

Monday afternoon, we brought her to the vet for the Final Visit. She went quietly and with her dignity intact.

She had a sweet and even temper, was undemanding and would greatly delight us with her bursts of kittenish behavior from time to time.

My wife and I miss her, as does her sister Kessie and friend Chessie Teia, our mostly lives in the closet kitty, is oblivious.

Storytime.

During the Middle Ages, cats were being killed by the thousands because of superstitious fear. The church was responsible for this. People believed both cats and dogs were creatures of the devil! As cats and dogs were regarded as witches familiars.

When most cats and dogs were killed off, the land was vulnerable to nasties. Off ships came all the horrible rats. These rats were carrying the most deadliest plague. Cats were not around to kill these invaders. This was a death sentance to the human population of England and Scotland. The Black Death is linked to missing cats and dogs. It took a few hundred years for people to cotton onto this. So they repopulated cats and dogs, and then the plague disappeared.

Cats are indeed heroes. They guard the home just as much as dogs do.

Their main role - at least of domestic cats that are kept by normal people and not by peasants - today is hunting rare/endangered singing birds, ground nesting birds and reptiles. Most "animal lovers" that keep domestic cats are sending unnaturally introduced predators out into the fields and forests to damage the ecosystem. :coffee:

Are you really surprised? What do you think a cat does once it has left the door? As a domestic cat doesn´t need to hunt for food it hunts for fun and thus millions of rare birds are killed every year by domestic cats. There are plenty of articles about it, just search via google.
http://www.abcbirds.org/abcprograms/policy/cats/materials/predation.pdf

The total number of animals brought home by about 9 million cats living in Great Britain
during the 5-month period April–August 1997 was estimated to be in the order of 92.4 million
(95% CI 85.1–100.2). This estimate can be broken down to 57.4 (52.1–63.1) million mammals,
27.1 (25.1–29.2) million birds, 4.8 (4.1–5.6) million reptiles and amphibians and 2.8 (2.3–3.4)
million other items.

When I see a rare animal I try to avoid killing it with my car, just as I try to avoid killing animals by releasing unnaturally high numbers of predators into the wild...
But whatever, what you do is akin to releasing foxes in New Zealand, but there´s always an excuse if you are searching for one.

Yes, they are carnivorous, and that is exactly the problem. Multiple times too high numbers of predators, maintained by the artifical influence of humans, are released into an ecosystem and damaging it greatly.

As with any artifically introduced numerous population of predators cats are indeed a problem and this has been proven by several scientists. The solution is simply not letting cats out of the house/barn and of course the castration of tom cats to prevent uncontrolled breeding.

Found our earliest picture of Miss Kessie, who, like all of our cats was spayed and kept inside unless she was in the yard under our watch. I don't think she would have known what to do with a bird if one landed in front of her.

http://assets20.medhelp.org/cdn/1342391450/medhelp_images/user_photos/282504?1342391450

However, as an active conservationist, I do realize that domestic animals, humans included, can have an adverse affect on the other creatures with which they share a habitat if not properly controlled.

YOU interfere with nature by introducing massive numbers of animals that don´t belong in an ecosystem. It is pretty ironic that I am called an animal hater by someone who is doing that, when in fact I participate in landscape-forming ecological activies in order to help species that are more and more endangered by heavy agriculture and... guess what else.

But Europe has Wild Cats - technically speaking domestic cats are just a domesticated wildcat (but the Egyptian instead of European sub-species - they're very similar though).
Domestic cats and wild cats can interbreed and that spelt the end of Wild Cats in most of Europe. They're now confined to a few forests and uplands, in the UK they only occur in Scotland and so have the rather inaccurate name of 'Scottish Wildcats'.

So even if it wasn't for domestic cats I think not much would be different. Many domestic cats don't hunt nearly as well as wild cats, however there is more of them due to humans allowing so many to breed.

This seems to become my favorite thread because I adore cats:love:
The discussion about birds is interesting and I think everyone here is a bit right.
Someone called them a "killing machine" and that's the most righteous description.Every part of their body is designed for killing, they are very successful predators though looking so cute and innocent.
For sure they affect bird populations and endanger rare species but again it's human fault.
In feral colonies most of the kittens die in early age,so from a litter of 4 for example, remain only one or two that reach fertility and reproduce.
Adults also die younger because of malnutrition and illnesses.
Domesticated cats however have nearly 100% of survival in every age because of owner's care and protection. In a village where there is almost no traffic danger but exists proper care from humans, cats could reproduce in enormous number.
And if not kept away form birds they can really do a big harm. That's why domesticated cats mustn't be compared with wild ones-human care makes things quite different.
In urban territories situation is even worse for the birds:
Constant traffic noise, air pollution, lack of nesting places, all this has negative effect on birds. And when you put a cat there, the catastrophe is inevitable.
Roaming free is also dangerous for the cat itself:cars,poison,accidents...I don't think it's good idea to loose cats go free.
I've got 4 cats, and all of them live "caged".Half of my yard is fenced so they can't go visiting neighbors, streets or pray for birds.I know that I'd taken away their freedom, but that's the only way for not making and experiencing troubles of any kind.

That's the point Ficus was trying to make though - typically cats are left to come and go from homes as they please. In England they just wonder through gardens and streets and there's no real control over them.

For sure they affect bird populations and endanger rare species but again it's human fault.

It is, but then again there aren't many rare species in typical gardens or suburban areas. Most rare bird species are in the countryside or on islands away from cats. New Zealand has a problem with cats though because the birds there often nest on the ground and they evolved without significant terrestrial predators.

Domesticated cats however have nearly 100% of survival in every age because of owner's care and protection. In a village where there is almost no traffic danger but exists proper care from humans, cats could reproduce in enormous number.

Indeed. This is why Ficus proposed controlling their breeding. There's enough people out there breeding them and enough in shelters without leaving in the male cats "intact".

In urban territories situation is even worse for the birds:
Constant traffic noise, air pollution, lack of nesting places, all this has negative effect on birds.

I think it's rather the opposite. Suburbs in England are a very rich habitat and attract many adaptable, common species of birds.

There are always some evergreen trees for nesting in, much better than the deciduous ones for that purpose.
Easier access to water
Abundant food - people leave out food for the birds, any food that is dropped is eaten by pigeons. Gardens are regularly dug up which is good for birds that feed on worms such as Blackbirds and Robbins. In the forests where they belong the soil doesn't get dug up nearly as often.
Plants in gardens often provide berries or harbour insects for birds to eat and the sheer range of plants makes it a more diverse habitat than many areas of woodland.
Some larger cities have a slightly milder climate (London is an example).
In cities such as London birds of prey have followed pigeons (their prey) into urban areas.

Cats can climb over most fences. I have a six foot fence that my cat climbs over quite easily.

European Wildcat:

European Wilcats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_wildcat) are heavier built than the Egyptian / African Wildcat but the two species readily hybridise which threatens the survival of Wilcats in all but the remotest areas.
So it's not like cats are alien to Europe, just that they're allowed to breed too much.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c5/Wildkatze-P1000618.JPG/640px-Wildkatze-P1000618.JPG
I had a cat that looked like this before, I got it from a sanctuary and it was truly wild in its temperament. :D This one is at a zoo in Germany.

Egyptian / African wildcat:

This species overlaps with European Wilcats in the Middle East, South Caucasus and Anatolia.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ae/AfricanWildCat.jpg/800px-AfricanWildCat.jpg

--------------------------------------------------------------------

European wildcats originally co-existed besides their larger relatives, the Eurasian lynx (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_lynx) in much of Europe, but Lynx are extinct in many countries now.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/63/Lynx_lynx2.jpg/398px-Lynx_lynx2.jpg

There was also formerly lions in Southern Europe. The European lion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_lion) was a subspecies of Asiatic lion which are now confined to a small area of India.

Albion, you have to consider that the numbers of many endangered prey species of cats, such as amphibians, lizards and groundnesting birds, have dropped significantly over the last centuries. The reason is habitat loss and lack of food, due to new settlements, roads, but also the heavy use of pesticides. At the same times the number of foxes has multiplied, as they can adapt well to all kinds of different situations and in fact take advantage of human influence in many situations. The same is true for crows, which pose a threat to ground-nesting birds and are one of their main predators. Also the number of martens has remained stable.

Now you have rare animals that have almost become extinct, just like the European wildcat, and that now already face increased predation through foxes, martens, crows. That is why even "green" animal conservationists support heavy population control of predators. We live in a highly "artifical" landscape, where almost every patch of land is formed by humans. Some animals have suffered greatly from the human influence, while their predators have benefitted from it. Now introduce millions of cats (which never could exist in such high numbers without the aid of humans), and which - unlike European wild cats - also hunt a lot in the open land, where you find many of the endangered species, and what you get is an ecological desaster.

Many people don´t understand the complex ecosystem and the damage done by free-roaming cats. However, experts do, and that is the reason why in Germany cats that stray more than 300m into the wilderness can be shot legally by hunters. It is not that hunters do that to save animals that they would hunt. They do it to preserve animals which exist in very small numbers or aren´t useful as food and which therefore aren´t hunted.

I didn't explain it right I'm sorry...
It's not just fence, but the roof is also closed by wire.So nothing comes in,and nothing goes out of it.It looks like enormous cage actually.

My observations about birds are quite different.During nesting and hatching cats do a lot of harm to chickens. For sure I may say that woodpeckers for example have almost disappeared from the area because of cats. And you know how important for the ecosystem is that bird.
Though all my cats are neutered, all neighbors are not,and pour out big number of kittens every year.Poor creatures live hard and die in cruelty...I dream for a day when people will realize everything they do, has certain sequences.

Lil' Bub (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/lil-bub), teh internet sensation. She is really so cute and adorable that it comes as no surprise that she has been turned into a meme :D

About
Lil Bub is a female “perma-kitten” house cat born with several genetic mutations causing dwarfism, polydactylism and disformed lower jaw. Bub rose to fame online after videos of her began being uploaded to YouTube in November of 2011.
Origin
Lil Bub was born on June 21st, 2011 in the state of Indiana. On November 8th, 2011, a video titled “good job bub.3gp” was uploaded by YouTuber LilBubBub, featuring a video of the cat stalking the camera before pouncing on it. The same day, the Lil Bub Tumblr[1] blog was launched, which highlighted the same YouTube video in the first post.

I found a solution to that problem., I hung the toilet paper from the ceiling on a counterweighted cord which pased through a pulley on the ceiling. To gain access to the paper, all I had to do was lift the counterweight (a sash weight) and , of course, the paper would descend to within reach.

Cicero tried to jump up to it several times, but the counter top was too slippery and he usually ended up either on the floor or in the wash basin.

The ''Gatto selvatico sardo'', (sardinian wild cat of the forest, officially ''Felis Lybica Sarda'') is the main feline of the island. Is in a serious risk of extinction due to reduction of the areal and for ibridation with domestic cat.

Miss Teia is 14.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/medhelp_images/posts/8626675_fs?1355668039

17 December is the day we designated as Miss Teia Honey's birthday from the back story we have of her life before coming to join us.

It seems as if she has been aging backwards since we all arrived here in Maryland.

Yesterday she was acting kitten-crazy, so I took out the laser pointer. She was very much into trying to catch the "red bug." She was a bit frisky this morning, so it was "bug" time again. She has already figured out that the little silver thing I hold in my hand projects the dot, she looked at my hand and then down to the carpet...anticipating where the bug would be.

A few days ago, we had a fairly close encounter between Teia and Chessie.

We think that Teia's previous family included a chubby grey cat that picked on her. Chessie fits that description.

Teia has, before now, hissed and run away from Chessie, who has been trying to make friendly advances for over a year.

The other evening, Chessie came downstairs and was laying on the bottom landing. Miss Teia went over, even made it as far as the bottom step a couple of times, to look at Chessie. They exchanged very pro forma hisses, but no growls.

Once we have a house, I'm thinking all three girls will get along much better than in Illinois, when the smells and territories were overlaid by other kitties past and present.

Here's a great passage on cats from Camille Paglia's Sexual Personae exerpted from the chapter 'The Birth of the Western Eye'.
___________

One of the most misunderstood features of Egyptian life was the veneration of cats, whose mummified bodies have been found by the thousands. The modern cat, the last animal domesticated by man, descends from Felis Lybica, a North African wildcat. Cats are prowlers, uncanny creatures of the night. Cruelty and play are one for them. They live by and for fear, practicing being scared or spooking humans by sudden rushings and ambushes. Cats dwell in the occult--that is, the 'hidden'.

In the Middle Ages they were hunted and killed for their association with witches. Unfair? [Perhaps, but] the cat really is in league with chthonian (i.e. of the underworld) nature, Christianity's mortal enemy. Underworld Spawn The black cat of Halloween is the lingering shadow of archaic night. Sleeping up to 20 of every 24 hours, cats re-construct and inhabit the primitive night-world.

The cat is telepathic - or at least it thinks that it is. Many people are unnerved by its cool stare. Compared to dogs, slavishly eager to please, cats are autocrats of naked self-interest. Their 'evil' look at such times is no human projection: the cat may be the only animal who savors the perverse or reflects upon it.

Thus the cat is an adept of chthonian mysteries. But it has a hieratic duality. It is eye-intense. The cat fuses the Gorgon eye of appetite to the detached Apollonian eye of contemplation. The cat values invisibility comically imagining itself undetectable as it slouches across a lawn. But it also fashionably loves to see and be seen; it is a spectator of life's drama, amused, condescending. It is a narcissist, always adjusting its appearance. When it is dishevelled, its spirits fall.

Cats have a sense of pictorial composition: they station themselves symmetrically on chairs, rugs, even a sheet of paper on the floor. Cats adhere to an Apollonian metric of mathematical space. Haughty, solitary, precise, they are arbiters of elegance - the principle that I find natively Egyptian.

Cats are poseurs. They have a sense of persona - and become visibly embarrassed when reality punctures their dignity. Apes are more human but less beautiful: they posture but never pose. Hunkering, chattering, chest-beating, buttock-baring apes are bumptious vulgarians lurching up the evolutionary road. The cat's sophisticated personae are masks of an advanced theatricality. Priest and god of its own cult, the cat follows a code of ritual purity, cleaning itself religiously. It makes pagan sacrifices to itself and may share its ceremonies with the elect. The day of a cat-owner often begins with the discovery of a neat pile of mole guts or mashed mouse limbs on the porch - Darwinian mementos. The cat is the least Christian inhabitant of the average home.

In Egypt, the cat; in Greece, the horse. The Greeks did not care for cats. They admired the horse and used it constantly in art and metaphor. The horse is an athlete, proud but serviceable. It accepts citizenship in a public system. The cat is a law unto itself. It has never lost its despotic air of Oriental luxury and indolence. It was too feminine for the male-loving Greeks.

[The cat] spoke of Egypt's invention of femininity, an aesthetic of social practice removed from nature's brutal female machinery. [The] aristocratic Egyptian women's costume must be called 'slinky', a word we still use for form-fitting evening gowns. Slinkiness is the nocturnal stealth of cats. The Egyptians admired sleekness in greyhounds, jackals and hawks. Sleekness is smooth Apollonian contour. But slinkiness is the sinuous craft of daemonic darkness which the cat carries into day.

The Young Demon Cats have secret thoughts, a divided consciousness. No other animal is capable of ambivalence, those ambiguous cross-currents of feeling as when a purring cat simultaneously buries its teeth warningly in one's arm.

The inner drama of a lounging cat is telegraphed by its ears which swerve around toward a distant rustle as its eyes rest with false adoration on ours and secondly by its tail which flicks menacingly even while the cat dozes. Sometimes the cat pretends to have no relation to its own tail which it schizophrenically attacks. The twitching, thumping tail is the chthonian barometer of the cat's Apollonian world. It is the serpent in the garden, bumping and grinding with malice afore-thought. The cat's ambivalent duality is dramatized in erratic mood swings, abrupt leaps from torpor to mania, by which it checks our presumption: 'Come no closer. I can never be known.'

Thus the Egyptian veneration of cats was neither silly nor childish. Through the cat, Egypt defined and refined its complex aesthetic. The cat was the symbol of that fusion of chthonian and Apollonian which no other culture has achieved. The west's eye-intense pagan line begins in Egypt as does the hard persona of art and politics. Cats are exemplars of both.

The crocodile, also honoured in Egypt, resembles the cat in its daily passage between two realms; hefting itself between water and earth, the spiky crocodile is the west's armoured ego, sinister, hostile and ever-watchful. The cat is a time-traveler from ancient Egypt. It returns whenever sorcery or style are in vogue. In the Decadent aestheticism of Poe and Baudelaire, the cat regains its sphinx-like prestige and magnitude. With its taste for ritual and bloody spectacle, conspiracy and exhibitionism, the cat is pure pagan pomp. Uniting nocturnal primitivism to Apollonian elegance of line, it became the living paradigm of Egyptian sensibility.

The cat, fixing its swift predatory energy in poses of Apollonian stasis was the first to enact the frozen moment of perceptual stillness that is high art.

"[The cat] is for the man who appreciates beauty as the one living force in a blind and purposeless universe...who seeks a proud and beautiful equal in the peerage of individualism...

The cat is for him who does things not for empty duty but for power, pleasure, splendour, romance, and glamour - for the harpist who sings alone in the night of old battles, or the warrior who goes out to fight such battles for beauty, glory, fame, and the splendour of a land athwart which no shadow of weakness falls."

- H.P. Lovecraft, Something About Cats, 1937

The Cats

By H. P. Lovecraft

Babels of blocks to the high heavens tow’ring,
Flames of futility swirling below;
Poisonous fungi in brick and stone flow’ring,
Lanterns that shudder and death-lights that glow.

Black monstrous bridges across oily rivers,
Cobwebs of cable by nameless things spun;
Catacomb deeps whose dank chaos delivers
Streams of live foetor, that rots in the sun.

Colour and splendour, disease and decaying,
Shrieking and ringing and scrambling insane,
Rabbles exotic to stranger-gods praying,
Jumbles of odour that stifle the brain.

Legions of cats from the alleys nocturnal,
Howling and lean in the glare of the moon,
Screaming the future with mouthings infernal,
Yelling the burden of Pluto’s red rune.

Tall tow’rs and pyramids ivy’d and crumbling,
Bats that swoop low in the weed-cumber’d streets;
Bleak broken bridges o’er rivers whose rumbling
Joins with no voice as the thick tide retreats.

Belfries that blackly against the moon totter,
Caverns whose mouths are by mosses effac’d,
And living to answer the wind and the water,
Only the lean cats that howl in the waste!

Quotes on Cats

http://www.twainquotes.com/Cats.html (http://www.twainquotes.com/Cats.html)

http://www.twainquotes.com/DurkeeCentennialTwainFriend.jpg

When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without further introduction. - "An Incident,"

...the person that had took a bull by the tail once had learnt sixty or seventy times as much as a person that hadn't, and said a person that started in to carry a cat home by the tail was getting knowledge that was always going to be useful to him, and warn't ever going to grow dim or doubtful. -Tom Sawyer Abroad

A home without a cat -- and a well-fed, well-petted and properly revered cat -- may be a perfect home, perhaps, but how can it prove title? - Pudd'nhead Wilson

You may say a cat uses good grammar. Well, a cat does -- but you let a cat get excited once; you let a cat get to pulling fur with another cat on a shed, nights, and you'll hear grammar that will give you the lockjaw. Ignorant people think it's the noise which fighting cats make that is so aggravating, but it ain't so; it's the sickening grammar they use. - A Tramp Abroad

One of the most striking differences between a cat and a lie is that a cat has only nine lives. - Pudd'nhead Wilson

A cat is more intelligent than people believe, and can be taught any crime. - Notebook, 1895

Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat. - Notebook, 1894

A Cat’s Prayer.

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray this cushy life to keep.

I pray for toys that look like mice,

And sofa cushions, soft and nice.

I pray for gourmet kitty snacks,

And someone nice to scratch my back,

For windowsills all warm and bright,

For shadows to explore at night.

I pray I’ll always stay real cool

And keep the secret feline rule

To NEVER tell a human that

The world is really ruled by CATS!

Fleurs du mal / Flowers of Evil

The Cat

Come, superb cat, to my amorous heart;
Hold back the talons of your paws,
Let me gaze into your beautiful eyes
Of metal and agate.

When my fingers leisurely caress you,
Your head and your elastic back,
And when my hand tingles with the pleasure
Of feeling your electric body,

In spirit I see my woman. Her gaze
Like your own, amiable beast,
Profound and cold, cuts and cleaves like a dart,

And, from her head down to her feet,
A subtle air, a dangerous perfume
Floats about her dusky body.

The Cat

I

In my brain there walks about,
As though he were in his own home,
A lovely cat, strong, sweet, charming.
When he mews, one scarcely hears him,

His tone is so discreet and soft;
But purring or growling, his voice
Is always deep and rich;
That is his charm and secret.

That voice forms into drops, trickles
Into the depths of my being,
Fills me like harmonious verse
And gladdens me like a philtre.

It lulls to sleep the sharpest pains,
Contains all ecstasies;
To say the longest sentences,
It has no need of words,

No, there's no bow that plays upon
My heart, that perfect instrument,
And makes its most vibrant chord
Sing more gloriously

Than your voice, mysterious cat,
Seraphic cat, singular cat,
In whom, as in angels, all is
As subtle as harmonious!

II

From his brown and yellow fur
Comes such sweet fragrance that one night
I was perfumed with it because
I caressed him once, once only.

A familiar figure in the place,
He presides, judges, inspires
Everything within his province;
Perhaps he is a fay, a god?

When my gaze, drawn as by a magnet,
Turns in a docile way
Toward that cat whom I love,
And when I look within myself,

I see with amazement
The fire of his pale pupils,
Clear signal-lights, living opals,
That contemplate me fixedly.

Cats

Both ardent lovers and austere scholars
Love in their mature years
The strong and gentle cats, pride of the house,
Who like them are sedentary and sensitive to cold.

Friends of learning and sensual pleasure,
They seek the silence and the horror of darkness;
Erebus would have used them as his gloomy steeds:
If their pride could let them stoop to bondage.

When they dream, they assume the noble attitudes
Of the mighty sphinxes stretched out in solitude,
Who seem to fall into a sleep of endless dreams;

Their fertile loins are full of magic sparks,
And particles of gold, like fine grains of sand,
Spangle dimly their mystic eyes.

I took a break at work today and heard a cat meowing. I made the sound cats love with my teeth and said c'mere in a nice voice and the cat instantly fell in love with me. It was rubbing up to me like crazy. It happened to be a Scottish fold as well. I guess I'm good with animals.

Also I think the more older I become the more of a cat person I am. I used to favor dogs but I find them a bit irritating these days.

Stowaway kitten survives flight across Europe in Airbus wheel

http://m.ruvr.ru/2013/08/02/1145285648/25kotenok.jpg

A kitten flew from Athens to Zurich hidden in the landing gear compartment of an Airbus, Swiss media reported Friday. The black and white moggie was detected after landing on Wednesday and had to be cared for by a veterinarian. It survived the trip with very little oxygen and freezing temperatures, a Swiss airline spokeswoman told Swiss news agency SDA.

The stray kitten had caused a two-hour delay before the flight took off from Athens.

Ground staff saw it roaming around the airplane and launched a search for it, fearing that it had climbed aboard.

The aircraft landed in Kloten at 10.21am instead of at 8.20am as scheduled.

“A cat was prowling around the Airbus A321 in Athens. Suddenly it vanished,” said Swiss airline spokeswoman Myriam Ziesack.

“Ground staff thought it had got into the undercarriage, but after two hours of searching they still hadn’t found it,” said Ziesack.

She said that the captain and technicians had then decided to take off as otherwise the delay to that flight and subsequent flights would have been too great, the Blick newspaper reported.

The flight was uneventful and it was only after the plane had landed that the animal was discovered in the front undercarriage.

“It is amazing as the temperature can drop to minus 50 degrees there and there’s very little oxygen,” Ziesack said.

Blick said an animal rescue service had taken charge of the cat, which had not had to be taken into quarantine.

“It’s now being nursed back to health,” it quoted Zurich health service spokeswoman Franziska Egli as saying.

The Blick newspaper said airline staff had taken the cat to their hearts, christening it Oscar Fox after the last two letters of the airbus’s identifier.

My dear, sweet Kessie today. We are performing hospice care as she has terminal intestinal lymphoma.

Why is it so very, very bitter when sweet things are taken away?

You have my sincere sympathy., I lost my dear Skye this summer to intestinal lymphoma. She was part Russian Blue and all affection.

Had to take her to the groomer because of heavily matted fur that needed to removed. She's a domestic long-hair. They gave her a sort of 'lion cut'.

Once I was in a village in the oceanic part here. I put some music recorded inside an egyptian pyramid in the car´s stereo, doors open. Cats started showing up and surrounded the car very quietly.

Rules for cats who have a house to run

BATHROOMS:
Always accompany guests to the bathroom. It is not necessary to do anything. Just sit and stare.

DOORS:
Do not allow any closed doors in any room. To get door open, stand on hind legs and hammer with forepaws. Once door is opened, it is not necessary to use it. After you have ordered an "outside" door opened, stand halfway in and out and think about several things. This is particularly important during very cold weather, rain, snow, or mosquito season.

CHAIRS AND RUGS:
If you have to throw up, get to a chair or bed quickly. If you cannot manage in time, get to an Oriental rug. If there is no Oriental rug, any quality carpeting is good. When throwing up on the carpet, make sure you back up so it is as long as a human's bare foot.

HAMPERING:
If one of your humans is engaged in some activity and the other is idle, stay with the busy one. This is called "helping," otherwise known as "hampering." Following are the rules for "hampering:"

1) When supervising cooking, sit just behind the left heel of the cook. You cannot be seen and thereby stand a better chance of being stepped on and then picked up and comforted.

2) For book readers, get in close under the chin, between eyes and book, unless you can lie across the book itself.

3) For paperwork, lie on the paper in the most appropriate manner so as to obscure as much of the work as possible. Or pretend to doze, but occasionally reach out and slap the pencil or pen.

4) For people paying bills or working on income taxes or Christmas cards, keep in mind the aim: to hamper! First, sit on the paper being worked on. When dislodged, watch sadly from the side of the table. When activity proceeds nicely, roll around on the papers, scattering them to the best of your ability. When being removed for the second time, make all four legs flail around wildly in order to push pens, pencils, and erasers off the table.

5) When a human is holding the newspaper in front of him/her, be sure to jump on the back of the paper. Humans love surprises.

6) When a human is working at the computer, jump up on the desk, walk across the keyboard, bat at the mouse pointer on the screen and then lay in the human's lap across arms if possible to hamper typing in progress.

WALKING:
As often as possible, dart quickly and as close as possible in front of the human, especially on stairs, when they have something in their arms, in the dark, and when they first get up in the morning. This will help their coordination skills.

BEDTIME:
Always sleep on the human at night so he/she doesn't move around too much.

LITTER BOX:
When using the litter box, be sure to kick as much litter out of the box as possible. Humans love the feel of kitty litter between their toes.

HIDING:
Every now and then, hide in a place where the humans cannot find you. Do not come out for three to four hours under any circumstances. This will cause the humans to panic (which they love) thinking that you have run away or are lost. Once you do come out, the humans will cover you with love and kisses and you will probably get a treat.

ONE LAST THOUGHT:
Whenever possible, get close to a human, especially their face, then turn around, and present your butt to them. Humans love this, so do it often. And don't forget guests.

Does Your Cat Have Problems?

How to tell if your cat has a problem by asking yourself the following questions.

1.Does your cat sleep 22 hours a day, and spend the other two hours in non-stop eating?

2.Does your cat take frequent naps in annoying places, such as in the center of the dinner table, in the kitchen sink, or on top of your freshly-cleaned-of-hair (and favorite) bedspread?

3.Is your cat selfish? Conceited? Arrogant? Aloof? Insensitive?

4.Does he wake you up in the middle of the night and refuse to stop meowing until you accompany him to his food bowl to watch him eat?

5.Does your cat tear down holiday decorations? Does he destroy any stuffed toy or cat-sized household ornament that might be misconstrued as his competition?

6.Does your cat perceive himself to be sole owner of all property? Does he often show disdain for your taste, or act as if you are an embarrassment to him?

If you answered "yes" to most of these questions . . .

Relax, your cat is normal.

WHAT CATS DO FOR US:

Give us someone to talk to. Warm our laps. Help reduce high blood pressure.

Bring the winter air inside, nestled in their coats.

Create a kindred feeling with other "cat people."

Turn common household objects like bottle caps into toys.

Make us more aware of birds.

Donate their services as alarm clocks.

Display daring acrobatic feats right in front of our eyes.

Contribute to living a longer life.

Make a window sill more beautiful.

Keep mice on the run.

Make us smile.

Inspire poets and playwrights.

Teach us how to land on our feet.

Let us indulge our desires to really spoil someone.

Make our homes warmer.

Remind us that life is mysterious.

Share with us the all-is-well experience of purring.

Instruct us in the luxurious art of stretching.

Show us how to lick our wounds and go on.

Give us cool cartoon characters.

Make even an old worn couch look beautiful.

"Throw a stick, and the servile dog wheezes and pants and stumbles to bring it to you. Do the same before a cat, and he will eye you with coolly polite and somewhat bored amusement. And just as inferior people prefer the inferior animal which scampers excitedly because someone else wants something, so do superior people respect the superior animal which lives its own life and knows that the puerile stick-throwings of alien bipeds are none of its business and beneath its notice. The dog barks and begs and tumbles to amuse you when you crack the whip. That pleases a meekness-loving peasant who relishes a stimulus to his self importance. The cat, on the other hand, charms you into playing for its benefit when it wishes to be amused; making you rush about the room with a paper on a string when it feels like exercise, but refusing all your attempts to make it play when it is not in the humour. That is personality and individuality and self-respect -- the calm mastery of a being whose life is its own and not yours -- and the superior person recognises and appreciates this because he too is a free soul whose position is assured, and whose only law is his own heritage and aesthetic sense."
