Intermediate, but with more dark than light types.

If you split up the regions you will see that northern regions (or atleast North of Bordeaux) can have even higher levels of lightness. The area where I am has more blondism than Southern Germany for example.

Do you include light hazel eyes in light eyes ? And fair hair are only nuances of blonde ? (not light brown/light brown with some blonde shades)

So for my final answer : depending on what region you choose they can be either light, dark or intermediate and it's because France as Italy for example is a very large and diverse country with genetical and phenotypical differences pretty blatant.

On average they would be intermediate but I don't think that's interesting to make an average for a country like that, exactly like making an average for Italy is ridiculous.

Ok. According to my sources the fair hair class here covers definitely the blond shades, as well as some lighter brown ( e.g. light brown shade which tends towards a blondish tone). For light eyes, it is predominantly blue/green/gray shades. Light hazels might have been included especially the hazel - green shade.

Very well put. Although I still think that we can make an average for a whole nation, regardless how large it is. I am well aware of extremes (very north and very south), but there is always a mean to be found.

I personally would go for intermediate, neither light nor dark. This is due to the stats I have concerning them.
Red hair - 3%
Pure blond - 8%
Black hair - 10%
Fair hair - 26%
Blue eyes - 20.2%
Light eyes - 45%
Skin (I) that burns and doesn’t tan - 11.6%
Skin (IV) that burns minimally and tans well - 31.8%

It's right to make averages for countries relatively homogenous, if not it's better to separate the regions and say what region is (light, intermediate etc.)

Ok. That makes sense.

I agree but you going to have a hard time convincing people that the region of France you are from is fairer-haired than South Germany. Many still believe that “Germans are blonds” theory.

This is where I live :

It match ancient anthropological maps with blondism rates and I've seen that as well myself irl. Maybe there's an adaptation to alpine climate don't know but these people are well northern shifted and fall into N.France genetically.

You see that little part with "dots", it's where I live.

On average french are obviously darker because of South and Central France regions.

Yes, the French are overall darker than Germans. The level of blondism in Northern Germany is higher than anywhere in France. It has to do more with geographical location than anything.

Yes, the French are overall darker than Germans, this is due to geographical location. A good part of Germany lay more north than France. The level of blondism in Northern Germany is higher than anywhere in France.

These dots are in Switzerland. A few departments in France probably are lighter than some regions in S Germany, but overall I think South Germany is still lighter than Eastern or Northern France.

Intermediate of course. Relative to whole Europe they are intermediate. They are only dark if you look at them from a North Euro standard, and even that hardly.

Intermediate. French seem to have beige skin rather than olive and their hair and eye colors range from light to dark equally.
