"Gypsies populations settled in Sardinia starting from Middle Ages, exactly from the 15th century.

In Sardinia the gypsies were called griegos (greeks), zinganos and gitanos , indicating that gypsies who settled in Sardinia came from two distinct locations, first of all from East Europe (the griegos) who are predominantly romani people who left from Greece and subsequently from Spain during the long aragonese and spanish imperial age (the Gitanos), that are called in the same way in spanish language still today.

Historic gypsies communities settled in several areas of Sardinia, in particular in the south (Campidano plain and Sulcis), in the most populated towns and at a lesser extent also in some isolated villages of the inland, for example Oliena, Dorgali, Orgosolo, Orune, Orani, Sorgono and Isili, but also others.

In Isili in particular the local gypsy community who was famous in the past for being devoted to the processing of copper (production of cookware) and as hawkers, have mantained, in part, their native language, called Pavela Romaniska, romanisku or arbareska , a mix of Sardinian Campidanese (Southern Sardinian) and Romani Language. This language is endangered today.

The descendants of the first gypsies communities who settled on the island are integrated in the sardinian society, their abandoned their customs and traditions, such as nomadism and they use sardinian surnames today.

Romani people represents the most numerous gypsy community in Sardinia today. Their presence is the highest in the Cagliari's area, in particular in the crown suburbs (towns of Selargius, Monserrato, San Gavino Monreale and Quartu Sant'Elena for example).
Other gypsies communities living in Sardinia are constituted by khorakhanè, sinti and dassikané, main of them of christian orthodox faith.

It's difficult to take a census of the exact number of gypsies living in Sardinia, first of all because, as said previously, many of them are mixed with other ethnicities and because they have adopted sardinian surnames (this is referred for the descendants of the firsts gypsies immigrated tp Sardinia) and also because the newcomers often refuse to be counted and they reject integration with sardinian society.

Gypsies living in the camps in Sardinia are about 1,000/1,500 individuals. Gypsies who were counted live mainly in the towns of Carbonia (in the city center), Cagliari and hinterland (where there is the highest presence in Sardinia), San Nicolò di Arcidano (in Province of Oristano) and though with much lower numbers than in the south also in some towns of nothern Sardinia, like Olbia, Sassari (Piandanna area) and in Alghero (next to the hamlet of Fertilia)."
