I remember in 2014, if Kosovar or Bulgarian would claim anything "Byzantine" he would be accused for stealing Greek history on this forum.
In 605 A.D. Slavic Migrations still didn't happen.
So that soldier up there is 100% Balkan Soldier.
If we add like 20% Slavic admixture ... from those who migrated later, you get modern Balkan people, but those are still the same people.

I'm not surprised. Byzantines were more southern shifted than modern balkan people. And not all of them were exactly greek.

I don't think G25 or Gedmatch is available yet publically.
But more stats can be found on MyTrueAncestry.com
I believe others have this sample too, but don't know where.

This is the people that lost Constantinople the largest european city and for sure one of the most interesting ancient population. Its always very cool to see genetic results of this impressive civilization.

What was his haplogroup?
Distances are not close really to modern population.

Not surprising at all. BG encompassed half of what has been the Balkan province of the Byzantine empire for centuries. The ordinary people were Slavicized not only with the infusion of the slavs, but thanks to the Bulgarian state, which pushed the Slavic culture to all its inhabitants (many of which were obviously Byzantine subjects prior to that push).

Vlach power, what's the source?
It's from a group of Roman soldiers who were buried by Goths (with whom they fought)

Distances are not close because those are PRE-SLAVIC people.
few decades later many Ukrainians and Poles settled on Balkans.
If you mix those you get modern pops.
11.0 isn't very distant at all.
That's like -25% Slavic Autosomal to hit 7

Culture: Merovingian
The Alemanni were a confederation of Germanic tribes located in the Upper Rhine basin. With the defeat of the Alemanni by Clovis I of the Franks in 497 AD, Alamannia became a Duchy of the Merovingian Kingdom. Integration between the Alemanni and Franks from the 5th to 8th century AD was reflected in the changed burial practices and richly furnished graves of the ruling families (Adelsgrablege). The splendor of these graves depicted the family structure, wealth, and status of the familia and also the power of the Franks. The 7th century Alemannic burial site at Niederstotzingen in southern Germany was used from 580 to 630 AD and rerepresents the best preserved example of such an Alemannic Adelsgrablege. Discovered in 1962, 13 human skeletal remains (10 adults and 3 infants - seemingly all male), along with a varied assemblage of weapons, armor, jewelry, equestrian gear, and remains of three horses, were excavated from 12 graves. The grave goods indicated contacts with Byzantines, Lombards, and Franks.
These remains are of a strong and non-local Mediterranean male warrior possibly from the eastern Alps. He was found with Byzantine artifacts.
there is nothing Balkan about this sample, he was just burried with Byzantine artefacts

Actually a threshold of 0-6 is an ideal range of closeness/relatedness. 10 and up are legitimate but they are distant. All it means is that the sample is distant from most moderns but closest to the Kosovar sample group. If I am not mistaken most Albanians get Greek/Greek Thessaly first(No Albanian sample group). Also, Kosova sample group is quite small and not indicative of all Albanians or Kosovars.
MyTrueAncestry should update their modern sample groups.

Don't be such a hater(dial down your Cetnik). No Albanian claims this sample. In a general sense, they are still closer to US than to YOU.

This sample is exactly how I imagined Illyrian Roman Soldiers from Dalmatia, Pannonia, Dardania etc..
As you can see, Albanians - people who haven't mixed with Slavs extensively are way closer, while modern Romanians, Bosniaks, Serbs, Bulgarians are more distant obviously for a reason cause they mixed with Slavic arrival from 630 onwards.
This sample also hints that Slavic influence on Illyrians and Thracian isn't huge, rather moderate.
Still, this sample throws Greek concept of Eastern Roman Empire out of window.
We need more like these.

COnsidering you have little understanding on the Roman army which moved from Rome to Constantinople in its entirety your answer makes sense for unhistorical unreads.
