Why is the south the most racially clueless of most of the US?

Whenever I go to southern states(Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, etc) 99% of the time I get pegged as an "Arab"(or some other middle eastern, often Iranian but they think Iranians are Arabs anyway).

When I tell them what I actually am they think I mean feather when I really mean dot. Any time I walk into a store the owners look visibly scared, like they're gonna shit their pants at the thought of a brown person. They are generally quite hostile too.

Lack of exposure and general ignorance. After 9/11, I remember reading about a Sikh cab driver that got beaten up because he was mistaken for a Muslim. You can always count on a southern to confuse different brown people.

Because they are the most clannish, they descend mostly from Scottish and Irish protestants who are insular people by nature. If you went to some village in Russia they would be the same way, they aren't looking to be a part of a global community they only care about what is in their vicinity at the end of the day.

Lack of exposure overall, most old world immigrants are moving to suburbs / cities on the coast. A lot of bible belt people will only ever see a brown person on Fox. Obviously state capitals and large cities are not like this, even in the deep south but things like this are mostly caused by overall lack of institutions that the government in the south simply never developed due to the rural nature of the area
