I still don't understand how these calculators works, how is possible Ionashku to be more Southern than Andronic? He don't even have Greek_Thessaly in top 20 single population sharing. I know he have high Red Sea and low West Med, is possible that these two components to change so much the results? Vaniusha, explain please.

If you look at the K15 PCA, you will see that these are the components that pull up (from left to right): Atlantic, North Sea, Baltic, Eastern (Euro), Amerindian, Siberian.
West Med pulls slightly down and to the West. The combination of Atlantic and West Med is the cause for Andronic pulling noticeably West.
East Med and Red Sea pull strongly down and slightly to the East. In this model they seem to be pretty close to one another. West Asian pulls stronger to the East, but not as much down as the former components.
South Asian pulls to the Southeast the strongest of all.
I assume Southeast Asian and Oceanian also pull down, even though they are not drawn on the PCA.

So the sum of components that pull up for Ionashku is 67.65 and 67.02 for Andronic.
For East Med and West Asian they are identical.
It might seem that every percentage in minor components like East Med, Red Sea and South Asian can move the position around significantly. South Asian will have the biggest influence.

I will create a separate thread when the results will be ready, but here is the progress for my brother's MyHeritage results.
As I know the yDNA and mtDNA from me, there was no point in taking 23andme for him, as MyHeritage is stronger in the raw autosomal DNA department.
It took 2 weeks for my mom's kit and 1.5 weeks for my dad's kit to go from "received" to "results are available" back in January this year.

Is my heritage actually as good/better than 23 and me in autosomal dna? Because there is a huge sale going on right now and I'm kind of interested in getting my parents tested lol.

Yep, as Davidski told me at some point, when I asked about the best test for Global 25, he advised that it's something like Ancestry>MyHeritage>LivingDNA=23andme v5

You can grab a couple of 23andme v5 kits, Ancestry, MyHeritage and LivingDNA from your DNA relatives.
Just plug them in a random GEDmatch calculator, but having worked so much with K13, I remember the number of tested SNPs for genealogical purposes of the top of my head.

It's like 170k for Ancestry, 75k MyHeritage, 58k for both LivingDNA and 23andme v5
If you are on 23andme v3 or v4 like me, which use in the region of 170k SNPs for this calculator, then there's no point to "upgrade" to Ancestry.

Unfortunately Ancestry is not available outside US and some countries in Western Europe, so my options are limited to MyHeritage, LivingDNA and 23andme.

Wow, thanks. I’m definitely going to be upgrading to ancestry myself, and I will buy this MyHeritage sale to test my parents. Let’s see how southern my Moldovan side is haha

Well, as I already concluded, if your Moldovan side is typical for the Northern region, then your Ukrainian side must be Hutsul/Carpathian highlander-like. I was modeling you with West Ukrainians initially and didn't realise that Hutsuls, who are also West Ukrainians, are quite Southern compared to them.

Well, you need to test him to know how your Moldavian side genetically is, but this, of course, if he is still alive.

This is the closest match I have. And it is through that Polish grandma. Their father is full Moldovan.

Yeah, but those must be on the higher end of the spectrum. For example here is a match of mine who is a halfie.

My closest DNA relative is a Russian girl who is 2/4 Ukrainian, 1/4 Russian and 1/4 Moldovan. So a similar profile to yours, more or less. But she scores in the mid 60s, like in your halfie example..

Here's another person with a similar profile to yours. She is 2/4 Ukrainian, 1/4 Russian and 1/4 Moldovan from the North. This one has similar results.

Next top three matches for me. The first guy is from my Moldovan side, his mom is my grandfathers cousin. I don’t really know his dads side of fam. Looks Moldovan to me though from the results.

I thought I'd merge all the ancestral surnames of my DNA relatives from Moldova on 23andme and MyHeritage.
Maybe someone might find it interesting.

It is hard to believe in his half Moldovan considering that he doesn't receive any region. Might be a quarter or more, although I receive 8 regions as a quarter. Strange case

Not funny and I wasn't trolling. I'm not blind and can see the South Asian. If it weren't for that part the results would be fairly Moldovan. And for that matter, Tzigane ancestry is more common in Romanian-speaking areas than in Russian-speaking. At least in relative numbers if not absolute.

Just because they might score like a Moldovan, doesn't make them one. If you mix a Greek and a Lithuanian, you will more or less get a Moldovan/Eastern Romanian.

Do these names look Moldovan to you?

I wasn't saying that person is supposed to be a full Moldovan. Then again, Moldovan ancestry isn't something super rare in Russia, especially in cosmopolitan Moscow. It isn't very common either but can be found nevertheless.

She's not Moldovan, as in ethnic, at all. Her native language is Russian and she didn't list Romanian on the CV. If Vitaliy is her husband, then he scores like a West Ukrainian. Alfred Bodrov looks like a half German, so perhaps a descendant of one of the German prisoners.

In Moldova it's the other way around, i.e. more common in Russian-speaking areas as Romas themselves are likelier to be Russian rather than Romanian speakers.

Okay. I apologize if my post was offensive. Is that because of the South Asian? Tomorrow I'll post a Belorussian claiming he is Moldovan
Why prisoners, lol. There were almost two million Volga Germans in the Soviet Union. Another baseless claim.

Ah, it's not about South Asian at all. It's not like we don't have Moldovans in our spreadsheet with that amount of South Asian. I would have thought that she's Moldovan too, but this is why it's important to verify the kits.

I was suspicious because of the forename firstly, Lyubov, which to me came as a clue that she is at least half Russophone (be it Russian, Ukrainian, Gagauz, Bulgarian, Gypsy, Jewish, etc.). Then the next clue came when I looked her kit up and saw that the surname is Russian. Then I saw her related kits, which are also all non-Moldovan ethnics. Then the last hint came when I actually found her online as a person from Moscow for whom Russian is listed as Native language and German as beginner. Romanian is nowhere to be seen, even at beginner level.
Therefore, there's no clue to point at her tracing any part of ancestry from Moldova.

We don't have any migration from Romania. Moldova is way poorer and in Moldova there are less than 10k.

Maybe she's an orphan from Moldova, who was adopted by a family from Moscow? But that's a wild guess without any proofs, especially exacerbated by the fact that she doesn't appear to match anyone from Moldova or Romania or Ukraine in her closest matches.

Why did GEDCOM become so shitty? I remember when it was different, nothing was "hidden" and I could check the person's family tree. Now almost every kit with a genealogy is screwed up like that.

GEDmatch was bought by another company not that long ago and they increased the security measures. Now people can choose what they want to share.

I know but that started months before the purchase. It was good 2-3 years ago (I've been on GED since the spring of 2017)

Ah no idea then, but I'm doing the same on MyHeritage for example. I only show the surnames for me, my parents and grandparents, but full details for the older ancestors.

Moldovans are like 66% Romanian, 33% Ukrainian

Romanians are not homogeneous. Those from Wallachia are almost identical to Bulgarians, those from Transylvania are a bit shifted to the West, while those from Moldavia and R. Moldova are shifted East.
So in that sense Moldovans from R. Moldova can be modelled like 66% Wallachian Romanians and 33% Ukrainian, but also as 100% Romanians from Moldavia. Mind you also that there are very South-shifted Moldovans too. Those in the South seem to be closer to Wallachians and Gagauz genetically than to the rest of people from either R. Moldova or Romania's Moldavia.

They are from here, but actually live in Russia (part of the wave that left straight after the fall of the Soviet Union).

Gagauz rarely breed with outsiders. We keep our Roman/scythian/slav/goth lineages like it was 800a.d.

Not necessarily true, it's just because Gagauzia is monoethnic, which was the whole point of the autonomy, to preserve your culture. But those in Chisinau mix without second thoughts.

Leto

Gagauzia isn't exactly monoethnic

According to the 2014 census results, the ethnic breakdown in Gagauzia was:[15]

Ethnic group Population Percent of total
Gagauz 112,403 83.8%
Bulgarians 6,573 4.9%
Moldovans 6,304 4.7%
Russians 4,292 3.2%
Ukrainians 3,353 2.5%
Others 1,207 0.9%

However local Bulgarians and Moldovans must be genetically very similar to the Gagauz majority.

Well, almost monoethnic then, but the point is that they are mainly Gagauz, so it makes sense that most of them won't mix outside of their ethnicity in the autonomy. Outside of it, I personally didn't notice the same tendency.

Weird surname, which barely exists (https://nume.casata.md/index.php?l=ro&action=viewnume&id=5028)(6 households apparently), but it seems to exist solely in towns with ethnic minorities and their suburbs. Maximovca for example is plurality ethnics.

The root doesn't mean anything in Romanian nor Russian (unless it's shortened from "берег"). The eding "-ici" is shared with South Slavs, but it also exists in Moldovan surnames.

The guy himself is Russophone and probably identifies as Russian ethnically:

Probably 1/2 Russian/Ukrainian and half Russophone Central Moldovan if I were to guess, since he doesn't know Romanian. Did I give you the average for just the centre?

Another person from a mixed urban Russian/Ukrainian background, but this time the surname is unambiguously Russian.

Reznikova (https://forebears.io/surnames/reznikov) (yes, this is not the husband's)

Another person from a mixed urban Russian/Ukrainian background, but this time the surname is unambiguously Russian.

She is about half Russian and half Jewish, with some local Moldovan mix in between by the looks of it or 2/4 Russian, 1/4 Moldovan/Romanian and 1/4 Jewish, which results in a slightly better fit.

Quarter Jewish but less than 1 percent Red_Sea.

I have 2 full Jews from R. Moldova and one that could be from either Moldavia or R. Moldova, and they get between 6 to 8 Red Sea. For a quarter that's normal. One percent or so probably went into East Med, if she even had it.

Moldovan from Chisinau with roots from all over the country and beyond.
1/4 Ungheni, 1/4 Edinet, 1/4 Taraclia, 1/4 Izmail (Budjak, Ukraine); all gp are Moldovan/Romanian.

This person has higher East Med than the regional averages, so part of the ancestry is confused as Jewish.
We have samples with this amount of East Med already though, both academic and collected by myself.

I have 2 full Jews from R. Moldova and one that could be from either Moldavia or R. Moldova, and they get between 6 to 8 Red Sea. For a quarter that's normal. One percent or so probably went into East Med, if she even had it.

Those moldovan jews are ashkenazi?

The first is Ashkenazi, but I'm not sure on what kind of Jewish identity the other two took. If I'm not mistaken, we have/had only Ashkenazis here, so probably that.

The answer is simple:

1/4 Taraclia, 1/4 Izmail (Budjak, Ukraine)

The answer is simple:

They are still unmixed going by paper trail and there are others from outside those regions with this amount of East Med. This person is also on the lower end of West Asian, compared to the other 13 samples with similar East Med profiles from Moldova. So I doubt that it's that simple, i.e. the more South one goes, the more East Med they should expect.

This person have tipical mixed results, high Baltic and high East Med. Half of his ancestry is from Gagauz/Bulgarian territory.

According to your logic, the others that are not even close to Taraclia/Gaguzia are mixed with Gagauz and Bulgarians too. Applying the same logic, one could say that those in the North are mixed with Ukrainians, in cases when there are no Ukrainian surnames in the family.

You are very thick, amigo.

I was right, judging by surnames. And yes, if Gagauz/Bulgarians have such effect in southern parts, same goes in northern parts too. Plus people move, I know plenty of people in my town with ancestry from Cahul and other southern parts, including minorities from that area. Who knows what kind of results they will have, after I saw how different people from South are from people from central and northern parts of the country.

You were not right judging by the surnames.
Voinov is a surname shared in Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.
Alexandrov/Alexandrova is a surname that is 7 times more popular in Moldova than in Romania and 14 times nore popular in Moldova than in Bulgaria.

The only reason I disclosed them was just to prove your ignorance.

1/2 Moldovan Ukrainian (but identifies this side as Russian, since the parent is Russophone), 1/2 Central Moldovan from Chisinau
What about their Dodecad? You can always add it to your posts, at least when someone is part Russian/Ukrainian because I do follow this thread with interest.

Definitely, because it's not Aleksandrova, but Alexandrova since they are not transliterated from Cyrillic. I'm sure the actual bearers of this surname wrote it correctly on GEDmatch. You are being pedantic, just for the sake of it, while at the same time not contributing at all.

There is no strict transliteration rules in Russian-speaking countries, some may prefer Aleksandr and others would use the Western cognate Alexander if their name is Александр.

Is a simple moldovenisation/romanisation of these surnames.

Same as this one: https://forebears.io/surnames/voynov

Huimate, I'm doing a rokirovka, so there isn't any mate, let alone checkmate.

I can understand that those also exist in Bulgaria.
But I still insist on two things:
1) If the person themself claims that all 4gp are Moldovan/Romanian, then they know better.
2) If they spelt them a Alexandrova and Voinov, which are both more popular in Moldova and Romania than Bulgaria, then they also know better.

But at the end of the day, this argument that you've started is useless when trying to prove that their East Med is caused by Bulgarians, because autosomally Bessarabian Bulgarians fit within the South Moldovan continuum.

+-5 from the average is within the normal range for an ethnic group.

This is what I want to say, in Cyrilic these surnames will be the same both in Russian and Bulgarian, the difeerence will be in the Latin transliteration, Voynov/Voinov or Alexandrova/Aleksandrova. This guy just have very laughable arguments trying to prove what this individual have no Bulgarian origin, when half of his ancestry is from heavy Bulgarian populated region, which is seen in his surnames from this side. Plus his results are specific for a mixed person, I already posted here an individual with similar results and background.

Well, full Bulgarians are ca. 20 percent East Med on average.

By the way, how much EM does the person get on K15?

Tell that to them and not to me. They are the ones who claim that their gp identify as Moldovans/Romanians. If they chose the Romance version when transliterating then to me personally it is quite believable that they were indeed Romance speakers, which most Bulgarians/Gagauz aren't natively. The fact that they also settled and died in Romania only adds credence to that, because a random Bulgarian from Izmail won't speak a shroud of Romanian in the early 20th century. But you choose to believe in your own version, because you can't accept being wrong. I don't need to convince you, as if that changes anything.

Did I say something about his ethnic identity? I don't have any problem if he identified himself as Moldavian or Romanian, he can be even Greek genetically. But don't try to fool me with such pathetic arguments, when he have such a screaming background. Most of my arguments allways make sence, because of my deep knowledge of local history. Similar discussion was regarding Daos results when you desperately trying do prove how southern his moldavian side was, when his father bassically have same results like him, with minor differences.

Anyone who's pathetically trying to convince anyone here is you, mate, for refusing to believe what people tell you about themselves.

I didn't try desperately, I made simple claims, which turned out to be true. Daos' dad, despite being half North Moldovan from Drochia and half Polish, scores like some of my full unadmixed North Moldovans (sum of N_Atlantic and Baltic). His Moldovan side must be Central or even South Moldovan-like.
Don't pretend to me that you understand what you are talking about.

My Moldovan side is pure Vlacho-Illyrian. That’s why I’m E-V13 haha.

Are you going to create a plot for all these Moldovan samples? It would be interesting to see.

Your Moldovan side is beautiful. I don't see anything wrong about it being slightly Southern for Drochia and surrounds, compared to Aspirin.
It's Southern at the moment compared to the limited amount of samples that I have. But I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be typical.

Yes, eventually I will. I'm even thinking of starting a project like the Turkish members (https://turkishdnaproject.com/) from Anthrogenica have, which should accelerate the gathering of regional samples. Not anytime soon though. Got to finish some personal work firstly.

Rare find from Ukrainian Bukovina (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiany)

They are Romanians, but also have Ukrainian surnames in the family tree (Dimiancuk, Moscaliuc, Moskaluk, Moskal, Krokosh).
5/8 Romanian and 3/8 Ukrainian according to the surnames

Rare find from Ukrainian Bukovina (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiany)

They are Romanians, but also have Ukrainian surnames in the family tree (Dimiancuk, Moscaliuc, Moskaluk, Moskal, Krokosh).
5/8 Romanian and 3/8 Ukrainian according to the surnames

Dodecad?

Just a post on IncelSlayer, whom I didn't know, but some guys said that he was from Galati.
If he was then his autosomal profile was quite atypical compared to the other galateni that I managed to gather so far.
He is the one that's highlighted.

Something is fishy about that guy. I know he has lot of east Slavic matches on 23andme. There was a rumor his mother is Slovak also.
He is extremelly anti-Slavic btw.

Some Lipovans settled along Prut, on both sides of the river, while most continued over to the Danube Delta. Maybe he's a descendant of them, without knowing.

I made a neighbour joining tree for the samples in this database for R. Moldova and Romania's Moldavia. The image might be a bit small, so don't hesitate to save or open it in a new tab and zoom in.

Two big clusters can be identified, a Northern cluster in the lower half and a Southern one in the upper.

Legend:
R. Moldova
Brown - samples collected from the North
Crimson - Centre
Pink - South

Romanian Moldavia
Dark blue - North
Blue - South

All
Black - samples of mixed ancestry

I put some coloured dots next to my family, just for my viewing pleasure. I am close to my dad for example, while my brother to my mom.

The Galati sample that sticks out in the lower half is IncelSlayer.

Serbs also get divided into these 2 clusters in this algorithm:
https://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?313828-Serbian-Autosomal-DNA&p=6478176&viewfull=1#post6478176

but Serbs actually plot on a long continuous Slavic-Paleo-Balkanic spectrum, a PCA shows this better than the tree clustering.

I think he is just a Wallachian who studied in Iași. His birthplace seems to be this village where he went to school:https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C3%A2nganu,_Ilfov

I don't know. Probably some East Slavic admix. He is more Northern than most Romanians and Moldovans yet that dipshit would say disparaging things about Northern Europeans as if he was some kind of Mediterranean supremacist.

One or both of the Vaslui kits are from Nurzat (so you may already have them), don't remember exactly. I also posted a few more Romanian and Moldovan results in the original "South Slavic and Neighbors" thread, but they're going to take a while to find since its a huge thread. So low Baltic?

So low Baltic?

Yes, but the results make sense if you consider the sum of N_Atlantic and Baltic. And in that case they also correspond to those of the other Moldovan Bulgarian that Leto donated.
https://i.imgur.com/vf5jGaR.png

In any case, the guy is from there. I reached out to him because he was matching some Moldovans from my database and he confirmed that.

On an unrelated note, I managed to get the Stefan Voda samples on GEDmatch and I can confirm three things:
1. They are from the same village, as on average the relation between them is 70cM, meaning 4th cousins or at great-great-grandparent level, which is something expected in a small village.
2. They are not Gagauz, as they don't match the 10 academic Gagauz and the others that I have.
3. They are Moldovan, even the most Southern one, as they match people that I already have. I've compared only the 4 most autosomally Southern ones for now, as it's a tedious manual process, but I'll analyse all of them eventually.
For example, the most Southern guy from Stefan Voda - MOL-15, and Moldovan from R. Moldova in general considering the samples that I have, is a match for: one of the Eurogenes samples that you gave me and I labelled Eurogenes_1 (CM2678489), person from Balti, Straseni, Ocnita and Ungheni. Surprisingly for me, they did not match the samples from Causeni, Cimislia or the 1/4 one from Taraclia. I didn't expect to match with Cahul samples since they are kind of far away, but I checked just in case since autosomally they score similarly. However, they are not related.

He is very southern judging by Oracle.

@Ion Basescul, are your Moldovan averages for Dodecad K12b good enough and don't need revisiting?

They are outdated by now, as I gave you only my family, the Centre-North samples from Balti and South samples from Stefan Voda.
But I'm not using K12b, so I won't calculate the others anytime soon.

Those averages are from 46 unmixed samples and now I have 87, so you are 41 samples behind.

I don't care much about sample size as long as they appear representative. I personally use a lot of averages based on 5-10 samples only.

Looks like I am one of the few people who use K12b. But that doesn't matter to me because I use it largely for Eastern Europeans and West/Central Asians and for many of them my updated oracles work just fine.

They have, just like East Slavs, Gagauz, Jews, Gypsies and even Germans, but this person doesn't seem to have anything Bulgarian in their family tree. Seems to be a typical profile for the Southern regions (although the surname is kind of rare for the South, but the 5th most popular in Edinet), even in people without Bulgarian or Gagauz admixture.
To be fair, Capaclia doesn't mean anything in Romanian, so who knows what kind of settlement it started as. Capaclia is surrounded by mostly 99% Romanian/Moldovan villages, but there is one exception at 3km from it. It's called Visniovca and 16% of the population is Gagauz and Bulgarian.

Yes, but you need another one in the North. For example Cantemir is more Moldovan than your native district, according to both the 2004 and 2014 censuses.

Cantemir district have a visible Bulgarian minority, you already posted a Bulgarian from here who was very Southern with only 17% Baltic. Bay the way, after I saw the name of the village of that Bulgarian I remembered what I have a friend with origins from that village, he is Moldavian, and his surname (https://nume.casata.md/index.php?l=ro&action=viewnume&id=70055) (not Bulgarian) is from that area, despite he live in Cahul district now. The most interesting part is when he start to tell about his ancestry. xD

He have very mixed ancestry, he claim to have Ukrainian, Russian, Bulgarian, Romanian (interesting he name Romanian as separate ethnicity, and he claim what this ancestry is from Romanian territory) and Turkish. For a moment I didn't understand what he means by the Turkish, when he explained what this mean Gagauz. Seems what some Moldavians in the South name Gagauz Turks, despite them to be only turkified Bulgarians, judging by their genetics.

That line simply follows the most Northern Bulgarian villages. I only have one sample from Causeni and they are within the range for the Central region.

Samples in Stefan Voda range from being similar to the above and Central region (Mol-66 and Mol-69) to very Southern (Mol-15 and Mol-64).

These are the most up-to-date regional averages btw.

Because these villages were founded recently, and are not connected with the main villages. Here exist and other villages with similar background like Obreja Nouă, Pînzărenii Noi, Ciolacul Nou, Gara Catranîc. All these villages are tiny compared to original ones.

Are you sure this person is from Albinețul Nou, and not Albinețul Vechi?

So after tinkering with the settings for a while, I've stopped on this PCA format, which I will use for all of my current and new samples moving forward.

Here's how it works:

Up = Increase in: Baltic, North Atlantic
Right = Increase in: South Asian, Siberian, East Asian, Amerindian
Down-Right = Increase in: West Asian, Red Sea
Left + Down-Left = Increase in: East Med, West Med

Dot Colours:

Red = Unmixed Romanians/Moldovans from Romania's Moldavia
Blue = Unmixed Romanians/Moldovans from R. Moldova
Green = Unmixed Ethnic Minorities from either country
Black = People of mixed heritage from either country
Gold = Ivano-Frankivsk (Highlander) Ukrainians

Border Colours:

Red = Unmixed Romanians/Moldovans from Romania's Moldavia
Blue = Unmixed Romanians/Moldovans from R. Moldova
Green = All people from R. Moldova
Black = All people from Romania's Moldavia
Gold = Ivano-Frankivs Ukrainians and a mixed Ukrainian/Romanian from Chernivtsi

Label codes correspond to abbreviations for district/county:
