View Full Version : Haplogroup tests: Which test should I buy?
Thinking of testing for my haplogroups (YDNA & mtdna). I'm especially interested in mtdna currently.
Any suggestions which tests I should by?
For mtdna Family Tree DNA full sequence is the best. You can get it for cheaper price during holidays or world DNA day. I tried it recently and am very satisfied :)

For ydna, go for R1a yseq panel! One of these two.

yseq is based in Germany, so it should be fast for you.

What if Morley's Predictor is wrong and I'm not R1a :D
If you want to do everything with one company, you can try mtcomplete test with yseq, it's probably good too.

What if Morley's Predictor is wrong and I'm not R1a :D
It's usually correct in 99% of cases, but if you really want to be sure I recommend you this basic test on 30 markers, you won't find cheaper (also yseq) :)

Later you can try panels/SNP tests.
What if Morley's Predictor is wrong and I'm not R1a :D
You could do this if you want to be on the safe side https://www.yseq.net/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=56898&osCsid=fcf89d15a8e49a01c870fdb20262e503. R1a superclade panel included.
But I think R1a is so far upstreams that it's impossible to predict wrong.
Is there some distinctive value on single STR marker specific for R1a? If yes, you can order single marker for less than 10 usd to confirm it, I did that for my father recently (but for other reason)

Buy 23andme to see both, their Y-test deeper than FTDNA Y-12. Also you will get autosomal results, too. But in this way you won't have y or mt-dna matches. (cost ~120$)
If you are also interested in see your y-dna matches, you should consider buying a separate Y-12 test at the beginning. If you are not willing to buy 23andme, a mt-DNA test will also work. You will able to see your matches. (~220$ for mt-full and Y-12)
Then if you want to continue with further Y-Tests, don't spend your money on Y-37,Y-67,Y-111 or SNP tests. Save your money and go for big-y.(~399$)
Don't forget these prices are not discounted.

Why mt? It's gotta be some "boring" Western Euro lineage. For some reason many people find Western Europeans to be "boring" and "bland" and I thought you were mainly interested in Turan-Türkestan.

What a BS post. :picard1:

Because a) I dont find it boring b) want to know my mtDNA c) I already kind of know my YDNA, although not the exact clade
What a BS post. :picard1:
It's not my fault they say so. Go to Reddit and see those NPCs who are disappointed at getting 90+ percent NW Euro.

What this has to do with me
Can you open your ancestry raw data and search for 15779361?

What if Morley's Predictor is wrong and I'm not R1a :D
I will show you something :D
Morley gave me directly Q-L54. There were three subclades of it, one was Scandinavian, one was Amerindian and the other(L330) was Turkic. It was not much hard for me to predict that I'm actually in L330, but couldn't believe if Morley was accurate or not.
Then I bought Y-12 and it gave me Q-M242. Basically only shows me that I'm Q. Nothing else. In this step I could go directly with L330 SNP, but I wanted to be sure that I'm L54. And go with Backbone:

I was really L54, and then bought L330. It was also positive. At the end of the day I spent around 150$ for something which I already know.
Then, the bad thing, after some time I bought 23andMe. And guess what it gave me:

Morley is a good guy, trust him :D

My mtdna is from Germany and it's super interesting, found in ancient Viking burials, Bavarian Beakers, Corded Ware from Saxony-Anhalt and even mixed medieval Hungarian-Avar graveyard in northern Croatia.
I also found out some of most famous medieval Knights Cavalier De Bayard carried same mtdna subclade like me.
Kyp can find such interesting story about his mtdna too. In contrast, my father's ydna is much more boring.
Download DNA Kit Studio and plug in your raw data into mtdna predictor. It will give you basic subclade (H or U for example). I tested it and it's accurate.
example with Stears data (confirmed U5 on 23andme) - this one even found his deeper subclade

Great find! It should be enough to confirm his R1a. :thumb001:

Try again. It didn't work for me either just a minute ago.

I think it doesn't work with Myheritage Raw data.

I'm thinking about buying it but: will this tell me anything different than cladefinder.yseq.net
Should I skip this one?

I tried and it give me I2a, so it's accurate.
It would be extremely sad to think a person is I or R1 and get any E1b clade.

Clade finder is totally accurate so I sugest not to buy anyting upstream from this, only downwards (individulal snp tests are option too)

Bump
My Greek friend, the prediction of whom from Morley I had posted in the past .
He tried YSEQ Clade Finder and the results are the same as Morley's tool.

What shall he buy in order to find his deeper/est subclade ?
Something from FTDNA or I1-L22 Panel from YSEQ ?
