Good call. He was often teased by his Romanian friends for looking Hungarian so that sounds accurate. Wonder if he passes better in Romania or Hungary.

He is pretty much the exact same phenotype as my great uncle Bela.

But let's see what the Romanians say. Weirdlookingfellow lives in Transylvania, I'm interested in his take.

he passes well as either ethnicities in Transylvania.

only the smaller eyes would make me think he's Hungarian, but hooded eyes may appear smaller with age anyways, so it's not a strong hint.

He can pass in Hungary too easly. Looks like a bit like my paternal grandma looked.

He was probably about 84 or 85 in those photos but his facial structure and overall look remained the same since his younger years, including the eyes.

Perhaps we should check our gedmatch kits, based on your grandather's look I really do think I could be related to you!

As you know, I have traced my paternal line to Máramaros..

If one has roots in Europe, then there isn't such a thing as not passing in countries from around Austria to Moldova and down all the way to Greece.
The diversity in phenotypes is ridiculously high.

I'm just thinking back to what various Romanian and Hungarian Americans said about his look, they aren't really my opinions because I haven't spent enough time in that part of Europe to speak with any real authority.

He reminds me a bit of this woodcarver from Maramureș.

He also compares to this classic example IMO

An Austrian given as an example of the Alpine type of the so-called Caucasoid race by 19th century race theorist William Z. Ripley The Races of Europe (1899)

Who am I to argue with Coon, but that example looks awfully brow-ridgey for a pure Alpine, looks to have a little CM admix to me. Your grandfather out-Alpines that guy, imo.

Sincerely,

Mr. Goon

Alpine pride. What would you consider a textbook example of Alpine?

Alpine with a Noric touch? looks Central Euro

Small eyes don't mean Hungarian, he has a pretty Central Euro face. Partially as Ion said he passes from Austria to Moldova with ease.

I'll see if I can't find my favorite example.

Where your grandfather seems to differ from Alpine proper is eye color/pigmentation (he seems a touch fairer than average for Alpine), and also his dinaricized nose.

His combination of Alpine phenotype, small eyes, and slightly dinaricized composite face just strikes me as so Hungarian.

But agree with others he passes very well across central/eastern Europe.

I think he looks Hungarian and my grandmother more Romanian. Fairly common pairing in Transylvania.

He passes well in Hungary.
He has some slight resemblance to my Uncle ...my Dad's older brother.

8-9/10, very common imo.
