Very difficult question -- even narrowing it down to any particular metal subgenre probably would help.

But I nominate this one:

@OP: do you mean aesthetically (i.e. "I like this one the best") or artistically (i.e. "this is objectively the best"?

Receiving no answer to my question, I suppose I'll propose an album for each category, since really when one talks about "the best" one has to talk about both what is aesthetically most pleasing and what is artistically most successful. The problem with the former category, of course, is that it's completely subjective.

My favourite album of the last ten years is without a doubt:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7d/Paradise_Lost_by_Symphony_X_album_cover_art.jpg
Symphony X: Paradise Lost, 2007

However, the most artistically appealing and, in my opinion, successful album produced in the last ten years is:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/76/Gorgoroth_twilightoftheidols.jpg
Gorgoroth: Twilight of the Idols, 2003
The pinnacle of all ideological Black Metal, this album is certainly the most artistically complete and successful albums produced since the 1990s in Black Metal. It deploys Black Metal's natural qualities to their fullest avant-garde splendour, and is able to unite an ideological message making the music much deeper than the beer-and-headbanging that infects the genre.

Runners-up for "Best Album" include, however,

http://covers.a-go.in/max/summoning_-_2001_let_mortal_heroes_sing_your_fame.jpg
Summoning: Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame, 2002
Really, if I could, I would put this one in the "Most Artistically Successful Album" of the decade, because despite Gorgoroth's success at achieving the best ideological Black Metal album produced probably since the early days of the genre, Summoning has created something fundamentally new with their music, and this album being its best expression, it is hard not to consider this the best metal album produced probably in the last twenty years, let alone since 2001.

http://www.miomusik.com/satyricon/now_diabolical_CD_large.jpg
Satyricon: Now, Diabolical, 2006
A fun, fast-paced, and easily enjoyed album that unfortunately ultimately lacks the substance that makes Black Metal so attractive as a mode.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9f/TheSword_AgeOfWinters.jpg
The Sword: Age of Winters, 2006
This heavy-hearted, deeply resounding return to the early roots of Heavy Metal was extremely well received, but seemed to lack a certain timelessness of its forebears.

I admire Warrior as a true innovator in metal and Celtic Frost was one of my favorite European bands of the 80's. But some of their newer stuff is hard for me to get into.

It's funny because I'm not a big fan of Hellhammer. His style is usually a little too tight for me, but on Ordo Ad Chao he sounded so damn raw. His drums really made the album what it is; a great chaotic and atmospheric black metal reocrd.:)

Can't believe this one wasn't mentioned already:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dlDodAqSwYA/TeilLKqLRdI/AAAAAAAABZ0/wHO6HRsu9jo/s1600/Sigrblot.jpg

An audial and lyrical manifestation of the Faustian/European spirit, absolutely crushing in both the musical and the ideological perspectives. A masterpiece recommendable for every European.

Today we have no great warlords as we are not yet ourselves. The dawning Great War has not yet brought them forth because no one has yet attained the inner realization that he fought and died for a new myth. Today millions ponder before the grave of the unknown soldier. The eyes of all nations gaze upon grim tombs of war.

Soon we will realize that these countless men of the white race are martyrs. All of them being both sacrificial victims of a collapsed age and heralds of a new one. The dead of today are the living links between millions of individuals, for they are the founders of the folkish myth. They are the most sublime witnesses to the eternity of race and folk. Once this is realized the warriors of the Great War will be born. Also, a new culture and a new art will one day be able to develop from this myth.

Today this inner voice demands fulfillment of the myth of ancestry and soul. Conquest of mind – race and ego. Triumph of will – blood and honour! These virtues must reign alone and uncompromisingly – They must carry and determine the whole of life. The myth of Europa demands that these dead heroes have not fallen in vain. It is no longer detracted by peripheral values alongside it. The personalities must close around the centre of the folk and race soul. It demands a worldwide revolution.

The body of Europe. The Blood of Europe. The body of Europe keeps you in eternal pain. The blood of Europe keeps you in eternal shame. The bread of Europe, broken by you. The blood of Europe, shed by you. The bread of heaven ground to dust. The cup of life, barren as its host. Salvation lies in the flaming chalice.

Cast aside the shackles of dogma and humility, thus adopting the doctrines of the end of all time. The stone tablet of Moses reduced to rubble as his tribe wanders scattered in the spiritual desert. Their covenant broken with the fall of Sinai; the altar of perversion cracked from its core. From the burning abyss, purgatory's prophets chant revelations not scribed on parchment nor carved in wood - but falling upon the earth as they are uttered. Surfacing from the sea, out of mountains, in the wind and raining from the raging heavens themselves. We have found our messiah, received his blessing and witnessed his ascension.

Not because I think the album is highly original but because symphonic black metal is my favorite style of metal and no one has done it better than this so far. This style of black metal has been done over and over again but never this well :

Yeah, I know some black metal fans won't consider it trv or kvlt but I don't care it is still underground and not lame like Cradle Of Filth and Dimmu Borgir (sellouts) IMO.

Although, Therion's Secret of The Runes was damned good too as well as some other death metal albums etc.. etc.. but they aren't my favorite genres of metal.

They are pretty even in my opinion, although I might slightly prefer Oath Bound since it's more reminiscent of the old Summoning albums (Minas Morgul and Dol Guldur FTW!).

By the way, does anyone know anything about the next Summoning album? The last update on their website is from October 2008, it says that they will concentrate on Summoning after Silenius has finished his work with the new Kreuzweg Ost album. Well, it's October 2011 and we don't even have the new Kreuzweg Ost yet... although judging from Kreuzweg Ost's Facebook profile, the album has been finished quite a long time ago and should be released by Cold Spring Records any time now. Their last album "Edelrost" was a really good piece of martial industrial by the way, I would recommend it to every Summoning fan.

Kreuzweg Ost - Die Legion

Anyway, the blokes at Summoning should probably concentrate on making more music instead of writing crap like this (http://www.summoning.info/Stuff/PoliticalStatements.html)...
