It is simply a brunette person. So it is a little strange to hear that it is a characteristic that leaves off Europe. As there are pale people, there are brunete people in southern Europe and even in the British Isles.

I'd guess him Italian or any South European over British, given that he's Australian non-British ancestry is possible.
