View Full Version : A question for Turkish members
A question for Turkish members I have always wondered about my 23andme match results showing different parts of Turkey. With some regions like Malataya I believe I'm matching with Kurds but with other regions I'm not sure if I'm matching with Kurds or Turks. I'd like to hear your opinion about those other regions. If you had to guess which regions the probability of Kurdish match is low.

Btw Kayseri and Ankara have Kurds too but I'm not sure if they're used as a reference population in 23andme

As far as i know between ankara - haymana and konya-cihanbeyli kurds are dominant. (And probably around northern side of the salt lake.

I’m not fond of 23andme because they force people into catagories by ignoring segments less than 50% from particular ethinicity. For example their Central Asian which is based on Turkmenistan is ridiculous because if they didn’t filter out segments less than 50% Iranians and kurds should have gotten a large amount. I only got 10% c asian
Can you send your Dodecadk12b?
Matching with some Turkish regions shouldn't be a surprise since you are Iraqi Turkmen

Well.
Ankara is the capital city. The city holds a Kurdish population, it is pretty normal for the capital city. Plus, there are some Kurdish villages in Aksaray which was part of the Ankara. These people are native to Aksaray, not like Ankara. Turks are majority.
Kayseri, another big city and it holds millions from everywhere. However, as far as I know there are also a few Kurdish villages in Kayseri. Turks are majority like Ankara.
Giresun, you can make sure there is no Kurdish people there. This one should be Turkish. No possible Kurdish match.
Hatay, there are Kurds there but they recently migrated to Hatay. Turks and Arabs are majority in Hatay.
Malatya, Turks are also majority but Kurdish population in Malatya is significant.
The same goes for Elazig.
Hakkari, Kurds are majority for sure.
Tunceli, Zaza are majority.
Van, Kurds are majority but Turks also have significant numbers.
According to these cities, a Turkish ancestors for you wouldn't be surprise. Do you score East Eurasian on gedmatch?

23&me for regional matches is using not academic references (which would be impossible for whole world with thousands regions), but their user database. So you match simply their users from those regions. Now wonder how they assign them. Well probably using their postal address.
I'm mostly Kurd though.

Very eastern shifted in general for a Kurd. Not only the East Eurasian input. Very atypical results.

Yes but you are closer to Khorasan Persians and Eastern Persians than to Kurds.
A distance of 9-11 is quite high

Ok i get it but the k12 distance is 6 to Iranian and 8 to kurd. Usually the higher the k the higher the distance that’s why the G25/K25 distance is higher than k12 distance

Yes Ankara-Konya has the most kurdish villages in central anatolia, also my hometown Kirsehir(especially the boztepe district), Aksaray, Yozgat, Kirikkale and Cankiri has kurdish villages. They are sometimes mixed with the native turks so its possible that is the reason why you are showing east eurasian and cluster with turks. Those regions are mostly settled by turkmens, Ankara(many villages), Aksaray, Kirikkale, Kirsehir amd Yozgat are almost Turkmen ancestery, sometimes i don’t understand why those region show at average 10% east eurasian. The people there dint say you are a turk you are a kurd, they married with each other.
Also another controversial theme: the risvan tribe. This region has a lot of them, many historians claim they are just kurdified turkmen although i must admit the name sounds definitely Kurdish/Persian. Other say this was a confederation between turkmens and kurds, other say they are kurds who are highly influenced by turkmens. What i can say, you can see differences between kurds and turks there, but the risvan tribe has a lot similarities with turks. I think this is a tribe of mixed kurds/turkmens.
Hatay is mixed, mostly turks/alavi arabs. I have no information about the origin of the kayseri villages, this area has a lot of afshars that what i know but many are „less“ turkic influenced. Giresun is mostly of Cepni origin, just few villages are of Laz/Pontus greek origin.
