Forests and woodland in the ancient and medieval worlds didn't look the way they show in the movies. I visited a local wildlife sanctuary based in a wood. In order to attract birds, they left the woods unmanaged, so that the undergrowth and rotting falling trees afforded good habitat for insects and ground-nesting birds.
