AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - A Dutch military helicopter crashed in the Caribbean Sea near the island of Aruba, killing two of the four people on board, the Dutch defence ministry said on Monday.

Rob Bauer, the Dutch armed forces chief, said it was not clear what caused the helicopter to crash some 12.5 kilometres (7.77 miles) off the coast of the Dutch island at the end of a coast patrol surveillance flight on Sunday.

The helicopter’s 34-year-old pilot Christine Martens and 33-year old tactical coordinator Erwin Warnies were killed. The other two crew members were not seriously injured, Bauer said.

Pending an investigation into the crash, all Dutch NH90 helicopters will be grounded until further notice.

There was no immediate comment from NHIndustries, the helicopter’s manufacturer based in Aix en Provence, France.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he was shocked by the crash and offered his condolences to the victims’ families.

More information (in Dutch) here (https://nos.nl/artikel/2341643-lichamen-omgekomen-militairen-helikoptercrash-terug-naar-nederland.html). The black box has been recovered and our fallen heroes will be repatriated by the coming weekend.

RIP. I guess that Aruba along with with half of Saint Martin are the last possessions of the Dutch Crown in that Antillan region. A reminiscent of the once very active Dutch East Indies Company which helped secure Dutch possessions all over the world incl. New York (Amsterdam), Indonesia etc.
If His Majesty the King of the Netherlands would consider getting rid of those last pearls, I think I know some buyers who may be interested. No, not Trump who wants to buy Greenland from Denmak but many Turks would like to see a Turkish Polity in the New World.

RIP for the men that left their friends and families behind. Why did the helicopter crashed? Is it due to some engine problem or something?

Why do you even think that we would give them to the Turks ? You can keep your trolling to yourself.

They found the black box so the RNLAF will look into it.

Potential transactions, but it is difficult actually. So much so that it appears like trolling. Beside, French are very active in the region in terms of purchases, last time I think they had bought Swedish owned islands in that region, like a hundred years ago. Dutch would give priority rather to France. Anyway, Dutch still have Dutch-speaking Surinam in the ''Latino Subcontinent''.

Get your arse out of here. You will find no one up there being happily to ever accept Turkish suzerainty over them and I know plenty of people from the islands. As for your East India-story: they were colonised by the WIC not the VOC. As for Suriname ? Has been independent since 1975 and, for what I hear, they regret every single day since.

And just so you know: they aren't a bunch of colonies to be sold. They are countries within the Kingdom (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_the_Netherlands). Just like the Netherlands (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands) is one. We don't have colonies. Haven't had them since 1954.

Black box? And people wonder why I have fear traveling by aviation like airplanes and so on. I'm a sort of person that is deathly afraid of heights btw.

The NH90 may well be the biggest failure in the RNLAF's history. That thing has so many problems that it's awful.

It's quite old looking to me as well. Something that you see from the 90's or something. Italy was already testing the world's first parachutes for helicopters, though it's not out yet. I mean, in my opinion, the military should invest more on things like this to safeguard the safety of it's military personal:

We might just as well buy some Super Huey's (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_UH-1Y_Venom) or export MH-60S (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_SH-60_Seahawk#MH-60S) for the time being on the condition that they're build here and that the design is modernised and fit for RNLAF service.
