Greece To Begin More Hydrocarbon Exploration
Greece will begin exploring for hydrocarbon deposits in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas, Greek Prime Minister Yeoryios Papandreou announced Saturaday, RIA-Novosti reports.
"I am announcing that Greece will begin exploring for oil and natural gas fields in the Ionic Sea and near southern Crete and a resolution on a tender will be announced immediately", Papandreou said in Thessaloniki at an international exhibition.
The marine shelf in Greece's exclusive economic zone could hold significant hydrocarbon reserves. For various reasons, Greece has until now not explored these regions.
Israel and Cyprus have recently announced discoveries of oil and gas in the eastern Mediterranean.
