BAKU - For most of history, the Arctic’s unforgiving landscape deterred human activity. By 2030, however, it is projected that the ice caps will diminish sufficiently to make the ocean navigable in the summer. These persistent changing meteorological conditions reveal not only new shipping routes but also deposits of natural resources that were previously off-limits. Russia, Canada and the United States are all gearing up to dominate the area. But as the Arctic comes under the geopolitical spotlight, distant China feels obliged to sail north and carve out its own foothold in the polar region.

Warmer temperatures are melting Arctic ice and raising tensions as the U.S. looks to expand its presence in newly open waters. The problem: Russia and China also have growing trade, energy and military ambitions there. Photo composite: Ksenia Shaikhutdinova

It's a shame Russia and the US cannot join forces to destroy the yellow peril. It will be to the detriment of all of us. Han Chinese aim for global domination. Russia is stupid not to realize that the Chinese covert much of her territory for living space.

We are heading toward wars of unprecedented magnitude.

When big powers like Russia, China, USA start their wars...

I wonder if there will be anywhere to hide from it.

When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog and to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them.

The Arctic region will be of increasing geopolitical importance in the coming decades as new northern shipping routes become economically viable because of climate change. Currently it takes 30-45 days to ship goods from China to the East Coast of the US, usually via the Panama Canal. The new shipping routes which recently opened up during summers are faster. We're potentially gonna have new South China situations over little Arctic islands militarily built up to "own" the routes. That's the real reason Trump wants to buy Greenland.

Russia is very much interested in Canada and Greenland. There is a reason they have spent their time developing icebreakers and floating nuclear power plants in the Arctic. During the Cold War, when Soviet Navy was at its strongest, the Mediterranean Sea was constantly up for contest with the ability of the Soviet Union to supply and maintain a large surface and sub-surface fleet, now Russia needs a big fleet again for the flare up between China-Russia’s possible future which will involve exporting natural resources to South East Asia and with the northern seas being opened up more with the ever growing nuclear icebreaker fleet, Russia could make a new trade route from Asia to Europe via the Arctic seas, completely free from Singapore, Egypt and Gibraltar straight.

We also need homeland policies to strengthen our Arctic borders now that the ice up there is melting, but that's a different matter. All-in-all, we've been way too complacent and reliant on the US to do stuff for us, especially when it comes to the military. It worries me that other countries know this and are actively looking to exploit it (like how Russia now has nuclear icebreakers and how China is claiming parts of the Arctic Ocean for its new "Silk Road").
