Why are Swedes so famous for their smörgåsbord?

The word smörgås means something like "open sandwich".
The Swedes are obviously just copying the Danish version, the "smørrebrød", exept that their bakers can not match the quality of the Danish "dark" bread.

And even their world famous "meat balls" is just a copy of the Danish "frikadelle", exept that Swedes has got meat - but no balls.

If the Danes put a copyright on their cooking, the Swedes would starve to death!

Hey, I just got an idea... :D

But what about those traditional Swedish dishes that everyone around the world loves: pickled cod and "sour" Baltic herring?
