View Full Version : How much did the "Vikings" really influence the UK?

I have Colonial American English, mid 1800s Scottish, and late 1800s NW German. whenever a DIY model has a Scandinavian reference population I tend to get a fair representation of Scandinavian, thought I have no direct Scandinavian ancestry. My Scottish has been referred to as Scotch-Irish by some old family members (though I rarely get any Irish reference pops); it is suppose to have some Highlands origin, traced from Scotland to PEI and Ontario briefly before enter the states. My English has been traced to the Virginia colony mid 1700s. my German is traced from Bremen (Northwest Germany) in the late 1800s, so much so that my maternal grandfather's family had to be investigated in some fashion before he could enlist in WW2. the popular for profit companies have usually given me only a small amount of generic Scandinavian with no specific nation listed, and I guess that is reasonable considering the history of the North Sea region. However, lately every DIY model that has a Scandinavian or North-Germanic reference shows around great grandparent level if not higher percentage for that region, even with other Germanic or English references. I've purposely over fitted some models with English and German to see if this Scandinavian still shows-it does. So, for those learned folks out there, how much (DNA) influence did the Vikings really have in the North Sea region outside of their homeland? BTW, my paternal haplogroup is I1 which is Scandinavian routed, though I traced my father's father's etc to mid 1700s England. would that I1 still have such an influence?

Scotland and Ireland were more impacted on a peasant level than other places due to the fact the early Vikings that settled came from all walks of life as where the English Vikings tended to be more just the noble and warrior class. Norse-Gaels assimilated into the local populations.

Many viking samples are carrying R-L21, so indeed i think it affected more Ireland and Scotland in a peasant level. East english coast were the place that was truly colonized per se, there is a decent quantity of I1 with scandinavian clades.

A lot of Vikings weren't Scandinavians though, some were Wends, Gaels, Celts, Germans, Frisians; they were a diverse bunch.

Didn't know about that, i thought they were 100% a germanic tribe, meaning that most of them were going to be I1, I2, R-U106 and R-DF19. Cool.

Edit: and some clades of R1a of course.

I’d say you likely have a little Norwegian from your Scottish blood. Could also just be common-relatedness with your German heritage.

There seems to be a good amount of L21 in West Norway. A lot of the samples from this Viking study appear to be L21 but Scandinavian. I don't think L21 is all down to slave activity. Anyway it will be interesting to see how more of these samples pan out.

Anyway the Viking study appears to confirm that it was Danes that went to England and Norwegians that went to Ireland. From the paper.

The maritime expansion of Scandinavian populations during the Viking Age (about 750–1050) was a far-flung transformation in world history1,2. Here we sequenced the genomes of 442humans from archaeological sites across Europe and Greenland (to a median depth of about 1×) to understand the global influence of this expansion. We find the Viking period involved gene flow into Scandinavia from the south and east. We observe genetic structure within Scandinavia, with diversity hotspots in the south and restricted gene flow within Scandinavia. We find evidence for a major influx of Danish ancestry into England; a Swedish influx into the Baltic; and Norwegian influx into Ireland, Iceland and Greenland. Additionally, we see substantial ancestry from elsewhere in Europe entering Scandinavia during the Viking Age. Our ancient DNA analysis also revealed that a Viking expedition included close family members. By comparing with modern populations, we find that pigmentation-associated loci have undergone strong population differentiation during the past millennium, and trace positively selected loci—including the lactase-persistence allele of LCT and alleles of ANKA that are associated with the immune response—in detail. We conclude that the Viking diaspora was characterized by substantial transregional engagement: distinct populations influenced the genomic makeup of different regions of Europe, and Scandinavia experienced increased contact with the rest of the continent.

my specific clade is still unknown if it's Saxon (Dane) or Viking (Norsk)

Grace! Look at this paper: https://www.academia.edu/24686284/The_phylogenealogy_of_R_L21_four_and_a_half_millen nia_of_expansion_and_redistribution

According them, L21 in Scandinavia and Iceland are mainly DF49 (Typical irish clade) and DF21 (Typical scottish clade), also seems to be that DF63 is not insular at all, but more common in Brittany.

L664 is frisian IMHO, and would make a lot of sense according the historic movement and the frequency of that clade. I think L664 came to England alongside U106 and DF19.

Also the key in these L21 vikings, a big clue to know if they were originally from Scandinavia or Great Britain and Ireland, is their mtDNAs.

Icelanders, Faroese, and some Scots (particularly Northern) are probably the only populations on earth with significant-very significant Viking ancestry. Likely moreso than modern Scandinavians in Scandinavia. I don’t believe it was the case that there were Many repeated waves direct-from-Scandinavia. But I could be wrong in degrees.

Enough to where I often have Scandinavian as my closest population on most of these calculators- even without any recent Scandinavian ancestry.

I doubt all the L21 in Norway is from Gaels. I'll look further at these genomes when more info comes out. FTDNA has done a lot of their ydna and mtdna already. The Bell Beaker that brought L21 to Ireland and the UK was Dutch Bell Beaker an off-shoot of Single Grave Corded Ware. They were also in Denmark and most likely also went to Norway and Sweden. There just needs to be more studies done that show that L21 is in these populations longer. Some could come from Gaels and most probably does but I think L21 was already there before the Viking expansion. I'll be surprised if it is all down to Gaels as how is there so much L21 in West Norway? They must have been allowed to have their way with a lot of Viking women. :)

Seems to be that the most common mtDNA on vikings were J1 and T2, and the most common in these L21 vikings is H and U. This might tell us something, a small hint.

People might also want to look at this. It should still be getting updated with more info on the ydna and mtdna of more genomes.

One of them has my exact mtdna

Sample: VK102 / Iceland_128
Location: Hofstadir, Iceland
Age: Viking 10-13th centuries CE
Y-DNA: R-FGC23826
FTDNA Comment: Shares 3 SNPs with a man from Sweden. Forms a new branch downstream of R-FGC23826. New branch = R-Y96503
mtDNA: J1c3f

Idk though, they are so diverse that it seems that they recruited raiders and soldiers from every place they existed in, a lot of those R1b's could be continental Germans and Saxons recruited by Viking bands, Vikings often were more or less independent pirates. The only telling ones would be in Scotland and England where there was actual support from the Scandinavian nobility for settlements. Some of the clades I can see off the bat are more Celtic oriented than German, some even Southern/Central European.

I think H and U are the most common in Europe but J1c is my mtdna and I have 2 full matches in Ireland but 1 step matches in England, Norway, Sweden and the Russian Federation. Not sure what way it went though.

Yea The only telling ones are the rare ones like mine H2a1 which only exists in a handful of populations. Both H and U also exist in Asia too.

Norse Vikings=Parts of Scotland, and not really England. Dane vikings=England. For England it is Hard to tell, because Anglo-Saxons were from North Germany and Southern Denmark, so these populations would of been very similar.

Would be hard to deny the influence on Scotland, with the Seafaring fighting Lordship & Kingdom of the Isles and associated clans playing a massive part in Scottish history long after the Viking era.

The western isles were ruled as part of Norway up until 13th century, think the battle of Largs only ended this in 1263!

Just to support the other posts in this thread, it seems Norway had a big influence in Scotland and Ireland, showing they went 'top down' the western coasts and Irish sea.

I believe Liverpool has Norse input but not much at all for the rest of England, which seemed to attract Danes, and they cant be distinguished from AS

On another note I see Ubisoft is launching 'Assasins Creed Valhalla', have never played this I'm not a gamer but it seems you play as a viking going around slaughtering saxons/britons; the angle being that the vikings were mis intepreted and actually only wanted to settle and farm peaceably, a revisionist take I guess..

More independent really, don't think Norway had much control like they did of the Northern Isles.

Battle of Renfrew is another interesting battle to read about. Not far from Largs but a hundred years earlier.

Vikings were cool but overrated. Other medieval/pre historical populations are just as cool if not even more badass

Totally agree, vikings have had ridiculously great PR behind them for a while, it seems they were more mixed but many people still want to think they are 100% fair haired demigods

Other medival cultures are just as if not more interesting, maybe its the pagan thing, and that they were so different in the this sense from the rest of Christian Europe, that fed this curiosity from even back then

I wouldn't even lump them all together though since they weren't a single group, there were strong Viking bands, weak ones, smart ones, dumb ones etc. Their biggest exploits are their mercantile abilities imo. They were the main importers and exporters of their age. The Normans are the truly important Vikings as they ended the Viking age and transformed the European diplomatic and martial landscapes. They were also a major force in pushing out the Moors and in the Crusades.

More independent really, don't think Norway had much control like they did of the Northern Isles.

Battle of Renfrew is another interesting battle to read about. Not far from Largs but a hundred years earlier.

You arent a viking once you stop living their degenerate lifestyle.

Also LOL at Vikings in Seville

Like todays Scandos converting to islam after defeat

Most of the Vikings sailed back to Francia (modern-day France), and their defeat by the Andalusian army might have discouraged them from attacking the Iberian Peninsula again.[5] The following year, the Vikings sent an embassy to the court of Abd ar-Rahman, who then sent the poet Yahya ibn al-Hakam (nicknamed Al-Ghazal, "the Gazelle") as an ambassador to the Vikings. Later Islamic sources report that some of the raiders remained and settled in the area, converted to Islam, and became cheese traders.

Watch the video of the prisoner. Tell me something about some cultural achievments of the Vikings.. .. It is a rhetorical question because scholars from all over the world know very well that the Viking culture had no consistency.

I don't care about viking's mythology ( few written pages or a small fraction of the written pages of a second level ancient roman thinker ) written by Christians monks in XIII-XIV century..

In order to influence culturally a country... it is necessary to have a culture, ethic and social policy that can be a term of comparison and reference.

Sorry for the fanatics of scandinavia.. but their ancestor till X century A.D. were at the same cultural level of amazzonia tribes or west-africa negro's tribes..

I don't think that a "intelligent" english could be proud of some primitive people who looted monasteries and captured many local people to sell them as slaves to the Arabs

I also want to see what the Picts from the Orkneys look like ones the genomes are available.

Skimmed through the paper on picts. But interestingly they used the massive PoBi samples to ancients.

The individuals that best match a
Denmark population also match well the 'UK181_g’ population. The UK populations contain
individuals from the PoBI study and so we can confirm that these are English and hence contain a
high proportion of Anglo-Saxon ancestry.

The 'UK61_e' population, which is well-matched by the ancient Orkney individuals, contains individuals from Scotland and Northern Ireland, whilst 'UK_24f'
contains individuals from Wales. Another difficult population is Sweden, for which ancient
individuals often well-associate with significant Finland or Norwegian ancestry.

In Figure S11.3 showing ancient individuals painted against modern populations, the Orkney
individuals best match modern Scottish populations (UK61_e), and show no particular
affinity to modern Scandinavian ancestry. In Figure S11.4 showing the importance of modern
populations for ancient samples, the modern UK populations do not well describe this
variation.

In Figure S11.6c-d showing the painting of modern population clusters against ancients, the
Irish and Scottish (UK61_e) and Welsh (UK24_f) populations receive the most ‘UK’
ancestry

Modern genetic variation within the UK202 sees variation between ‘native Briton’ populations in
Wales, Scotland, Cornwall, and Ireland as large compared to that within the more ‘Anglo-Saxon’
English. This is despite subsequent gene flow into those populations from English-like populations.
We have not attempted to disentangle modern genetic drift from historically distinct populations.
Roman-era period people in England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland may not have been genetically
close to these Orkney individuals, but our results show that they have a shared genetic component as
they represent the same direction of variation.

Scotland and Ireland were more impacted on a peasant level than other places due to the fact the early Vikings that settled came from all walks of life as where the English Vikings tended to be more just the noble and warrior class. Norse-Gaels assimilated into the local populations.

WTF ?! ' We find evidence for a major influx of Danish ancestry into England; a Swedish influx into the Baltic; and Norwegian influx into Ireland, Iceland and Greenland.'

^ Why is Scotland absent here ? I would guess Scotland has more Norwegian blood than Ireland unless the modern 'Irish' really aren't 'celtic' anymore and has been entirely conquered. :picard1:

Anyway, this should not be about me but we are all human here so we selfishly try to have this fit our narrative (at least some of us do); it is hard to know how much Norwegian blood I have since not all DNA crapulators or crapnicity shitestimates say the same thing. Anyway, according to G25 I have alot of Norwegian autosomal DNA. I am 75% British isles and 25% continental German from Alsace-Lorraine (that 2% Kubuchinian probably comes from the German a vestigial remnant of Prussianism ). It's because of the sampling. I think the next study is using better sampling of Vikings with West Norwegians who were more where the Vikings that came to Scotland, Ireland, the Wirral etc came from. I think only the Scottish Isles have more Viking. I think the Irish have just as much Viking ancestry as the Scots. Dublin was one of the biggest Viking centres outside of Scandinavia and then there was Limerick, Waterford, Cork and one of the Viking samples in this study was actually from Galway.

Sorry I missed your post because I'm interested in that topic as well. I have a feeling that L21 in Iberia came later reason being all the Bell Beakers found there so far are DF27 and on the other side of the coin the ones in Ireland and Britain are L21. It would be great if this sort of thing is looked at in the future. I think L21 in places like Norway was there pre-Viking. There just seems too much to be spread by Insular Celts in the Viking period. It looks like it spread from SG Corded Ware which has its origins in Netherland, Denmark. So that is my conclusions on that. There has been promised a study coming out with L51 in Corded Ware so it would be great when that finally is published.

If R-L21 in Scandinavia is pre-viking, then other theory with R-L21 in iberians could be that some suebis (or visigoths) brought it. It depends on the clade i think, i mean DF49+ is for sure irish and L1335+ is for sure scot. Seems to be that Z253 is common in Wales and England. So i don't know which clade could be norse per se, i might search it when i return from work. Also there is no common clade after DF13 and DF63 in Iberia, this definitely didn't came alongside DF27 and some U152.

The Viking I share with is a dwarf. :) I don't think this person would have went very far from his homeland.

During the excavation, the archaeologists noticed that one of the graves (grave 41850, a.k.a.
UM36031_623b) was unusual. It contained an adult of very short stature, about 130 cm. The
osteological analysis of the skeletal material revealed that the individual was a dwarf. Further
investigation of the rest of the skeletons showed that this was not the only dwarf. The individual in
grave 33124 (UM36031_621), who was buried just north of the dwarf in grave 41850, was also
abnormally short. A closer examination of the bones of these two individuals showed that in addition
to very short limbs, their vertebrae were very short in the craniocaudal direction resulting in a short
trunk73. A radiologist was consulted at the hospital in Lundand X-rays were taken of several parts of
the skeletons. The radiologist concluded that the two individuals suffered from a disease called
Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SED)74. In addition to short stature and deformed limbs,
individuals affected by SED can have a flat face, and occasionally a cleft palate and/or club foot.
Approximately 50 percent of those with the disease also have myopia and/or retinal detachment. SED
is usually inherited as an autosomal dominant condition. It can either arise due to a mutation or appear
in a child of an affected parent. If one parent is affected, the risk of inheritance is 50 percent and if
both parents are affected the risk is 75 percent. There are three possible family relationships for the
dwarfs at Skämsta. They are either brother and sister, mother and son or father and daughter.

The supplementary paper is really interesting.
