After similar threads for Romania and Moldova (Moldavia (https://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?327651-Moldovan-Romanian-GEDmatch-Results-v2), Wallachia (https://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?332304-Wallachian-Romanian-GEDmatch-Results-v2) and Transylvania (https://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?319438-Transylvanian-Romanian-GEDmatch-Results)), I decided that it's time to show Bulgaria some love as well.

For the purpose of this thread, Bulgaria will be divided regionally along the lines of the NUTS statistical regions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NUTS_statistical_regions_of_Bulgaria):

This is just the beginning and I will continue to update these averages.

Later today or tomorrow I will also post the averages by provinces. Please don't copy and give them to Lucas, because I don't want to have 1001 averages on K13 again. We will just use the regional ones, as I am doing for Romania and R. Moldova.

By the way, we were talking the other day about the genetic composition of Northern Bulgarians versus Southern Romanians. The two of them are similar, but what's interesting is that in both countries the Western parts are more Northern-shifted than the Central and Eastern.
Any guesses on what's the cause for that?

Also interesting to notice how Southern Romanians have more Siberian/East Asian admixture than Bulgarians, who according to the history of the country was founded by Turkic Bulgars.

In fact Bulgarians are not Bulgars, maybe some parts of Bulgaria have more East_Asian/Siberian admixture but in general they are not, uses only name, they r native+slavic.
Btw thanks for idea i will try to make charts like this for Macedonians with regions.

Of course they are not Turkic. They are just Serbs who use Turkic name, like you are Serbs with ancient Macedonian name/umbrella.

I feel bored and to bump thread I played with my coordinates bit. Thracian (FTDNA) and Thracian_I (23andMe)

First I modeled only Anatolian Turks and Bulgarians.

Amazing job. You are doing more for Bulgarian genetics than all bulgarians combined. The sea side was heavily colonized by Greeks and Romans. Most of them spoke Greek until around 1920 and some are still called greeks for shits and giggles. Also keep in mind the Varna neolithic samples, there was a big culture out there.

"who according to the history of the country was founded by Turkic Bulgars." - That was pretty cringe, idk how people assume they were turkic with 0 proofs.

If you wanna run me or use me in the averages, I'm from the dead center of the country, just 30km north of Plovdiv: BaiNed,25.63,21.24,18.04,8.86,22.32,2.31,0,0,0.27, 0.97,0.32,0,0

This is just the beginning and I will continue to update these averages.

Later today or tomorrow I will also post the averages by provinces. Please don't copy and give them to Lucas, because I don't want to have 1001 averages on K13 again. We will just use the regional ones, as I am doing for Romania and R. Moldova.

As promised, here are the provincial averages. Some provinces have very few samples and will obviously grow with time. If you find something, post them in this thread to get them added.

Here it is, I am using Vahaduo (https://vahaduo.github.io/custompca/) instead of PAST, since I need my work computer with Windows for the latter one.

Number of samples:

Northern Bulgaria: 51
Southern Romania: 219
Eastern and Southern Serbia: 23

Romanians are clearly overrepresented and even Bulgarians are almost twice as many as Serbs. Having taken these disadvantages into account, on average Bulgarians appear slightly more Near Eastern-shifted, Romanians more West European-shifted and Serbs East European-shifted. There are also a couple of Southern Romanian outliers who are both more East European and Near East-shifted than both East/South Serbs and Northern Bulgarians.

on the second PCA, it's obvious that South Romanians and North Bulgarians have a very similar range and distribution, with some Romanains being more Slavic admixed than any of the Bulgarian samples.
so there goes my theory about autosomal dna correlating with linguistics.

so there goes my theory about autosomal dna correlating with linguistics.

Well, that could still be true. Bulgaria's ancient Thracian sample was more Southern genetically than the Getae samples from Moldova. The ancient samples from the coast of Croatia were more Northern than both.
So theoretically, Northern Bulgarians received a larger Slavic input than Southern Romanians, but because Romania's native population was more Northern-shifted, they arrive at about the same results.

Lioncourt

So genetic difference in Bulgaria is more west/east than north/south. Not surprising.

Also, result from Sofia city are slightly different from other western results and closer to Bulgarian average. Again not surprising.

Do Bulgarian nationalists put the accent on the Turkic, Slavic or Thracian aspect?

Bulgars were not turkic, I can tell you that for sure. When that Harvard DNA study comes out next year, the debate will be dead once and for all. Enough with soviet propaganda. Slavic is just panslavism = russian fifth column. Thracian is new and gaining popularity, someone had a revelation that can profit from all the gold and archeological sites.

UT8918045 is my kit number you can add me to Northwestern Bulgaria. What i notice is we have more Baltic than other regions in Bulgaria which means more Slavic what is interesting is whether that is because the region of Northwestern Bulgaria was more depopulated than other regions or the other regions were the same amount of depopulated but they later mixed with other native balkanites, i tend to think its probably the first.

It seems that people closer to Serbia originally, both in the North and South have a higher weight of Northern components (North Atlantic and Baltic). In your case the sum of them is lower than average for Northwestern and Southwestern Bulgaria, but you definitely fit within their variety.

These should be supposedly Greeks but some are in Pomak and Bulgarian degrees. Now I question if they mean all the present ethnicities while naming them "East_Rumelia."

Anyway, 5 of them have consistency in terms of being Greek, while the other 5 are kind of outliers. These are the outliers(extremely North/South)

they are supposed to be Greek? it's mentioned in the study?

they are supposed to be Greek? it's mentioned in the study?

This is the only information provided in the article:

In our sample collection process from the Greek subpopulations, we extracted DNA from blood samples of individuals that were at least 70 y old and self-reported that all four grandparents originated from the target population. We expect that because of our sample selection process, our data reflect the genetic structure of the Greek subpopulations four generations before present. We combined our data with four additional datasets to study population structure around the Mediterranean basin as well as Northern Europe. Thus, we produced a dataset of 964 samples from 32 populations, genotyped on 75,194 SNPs.

The Greek members in Anthrogenica, together with Davidski, presumed that Rumelia samples are Greeks. But what I see here they can be random Plovdivians as well. If we are going to presume that these are the Greeks, their average when the individuals I mentioned as outliers are removed actually show a connection to the Northern Greek data we had.(Greece_Northeast as a reference)

If they are all indeed the Greeks, it shows recent colonization effort from the Southern Greece/Aegea, and somehow it preserved.(Individuals were quite old though.) In addition, it also shows some Bulgarians are absorbed among the Greek community.

If we are going to presume these are not Greeks and randomly collected, samples might be including half Sephardic Jewish individuals, Pomaks, Bulgarians, and Greeks.

in the supplementary data it says they are from Plovdiv.

could be refering just to the actual Greek samples from the study, like the Cretans, Macedonians etc.

there are many other non-Greek samples in the study too. Serbs, Hungarians..

I think all of them should be Greek speakers. Otherwise, I don't see any reason to put Greeks from North, Southern and Anatolia in the same basket. Northern Greeks, especially Greeks from Macedonia are closer to Bulgarians. Anyway, I excluded 3 of outliers -643, 636 and 652 because Greek Istanbul and Greek Macedonia Thrace are mixed- and divided those samples into 3 different groups, according to their closest populations.

Yes, I'm aware of it. I presumed they are Greeks because of what Thracian stated and thought Johnny and 23abc in Anthrogenica have some other information we don't have, but apparently they don't have. But how is it likely to found such Greek shifted individuals if you collect samples randomly in a Bulgarian town? This is the question we should ask.

But then, you see the variation...

https://i.ibb.co/qd8HrfC/Ads-z.png

2 Major clusters, one possibly cluster, and 3 definitive outliers. I wonder how the projection would look like based on Dodecad K12b.

they are all further south than Bulgaria-SC. Maybe they are Plovdiv Greeks after all.

i'll try to do the dodecad tomorrow. the samples have number-coded snps, they'll need some reformating to get the most k12b snps out of them.

Maybe someone already asked about; which software did you used for this PCA?

As promised, here are the provincial averages. Some provinces have very few samples and will obviously grow with time. If you find something, post them in this thread to get them added.

Yours look significantly more Southern, but I guess that's normal for a big town.

3 out of 4 are part of the same family, so that's probably why. With a larger cohort, it might decrease.

If I were to guess then probably Turkish, since Northeastern Bulgaria forms the Turkish hotspot from what I recall.

If this is not the case of an assimilated Turkish family member, then perhaps 23andme is just wonky. Should have him try K13 if possible and compare to others from the area.

23andme says his Anatolia ancestor was born in 1820-1880, is it possible, that Turks assimilate into Bulgarian nation, before Bulgarian independence or communism? All my Balkan matches I have except this from Silistra score 100% Balkan

That doesn't need to be really a Turk from Bulgaria. 23andMe uses some Balkan populations among Anatolian references like Pomaks. That's why some people oddly get Anatolian.

Where is it written? On 23andme website there is written they use Western Turks for that, you say people oddly get Anatolian according to one result, which can be correct and not false positive, I would agree if all Bulgarians, Albanians or Greeks had it

Who knows, I wouldn't interpret the timeline literally. I have only 7 matches, but they are more diverse than all scoring 100% Balkan.

1 can have Romanian ancestry, Romanians have 0-4% Anatolian, because of Tatar settlements, it is not as high as 15%
2 is pure Bulgarian
3 is pure Bulgarian
4 is pure Bulgarian
5 has Roma herutage
6 is pure Bulgarian
7 is pure Bulgarian

Not higher, than 5%, those who get small amounts can have Romanian ancestry and they very likely have if you match them

3/3 are from Vratsa and 2/3 specified the exact location, which is the town of Oryahovo. It seems to be on the Danube, so these could have some shared ancestry with Romanians. But could also be completely random. In any case, the point was that 100% Balkan-scoring Bulgarians is just your personal experience.

Does this 10% Eastern European or <1% SSA, Central Asian or Anatolian mean anything? We should keep in mind, that people who test very likely have some suspected or known distant or recent "foreign" ancestry.

Are you from the US? In Europe it's pretty normal for endings to change, depending on the assimilation trends of a given era/empire. That's why the root is the most important part and it is Turkish.
https://forebears.io/surnames/dede
https://forebears.io/surnames/dedeo%C4%9Flu

If that's not a surname, but a forename, then that still doesn't change anything. Such a forename doesn't even exist in Bulgaria, but there are thousands of individuals with it in Turkey.

You should be very skeptical about surnames that have so few people bearing it. It could be a new family, which was formed after someone renounced his original one.

:D :D :D
You realize that dede means grandfather in both Turkish and Bulgarian right? A lot of family names are based on turkish professions, because bulgarians didnt have family names before the liberation. Hence you have plenty of arabadzjiev, merdjanov, dulgarski, lalovski, etc. which got the -ev/-ov/-ski ending. They are not turks in any regard and most of the time not related to each other. Other family names are based on the father name - hence you see plenty of Ivanov, Petrov, Nikolaev, Georgiev. The last group is based on some sort of appearance or behavior the ancestor had when the liberation happened + nicknames - Mishkov, Misirov, Barzev, Gegov etc. Yanashev is probably from a person with the name Ianasi or had the nickname "the knyaz". Lots of people change their family names now, because some of them feel embraced = mostly the nickname ones :D

This is the only information provided in the article:

I have a correction. They just listed the capital of each region, and Plovdiv is the "capital of East Rumelia" according to them.
the pointer on the map actually seems to land on Haskovo or something nearby , and not Plovdiv.

also, there were no Greeks in Plovdiv in the last 20 years, according to wikipedia.

so could these samples be the general population of Haskovo? or maybe Haskovo Greeks, if they exist?

It could be a random pointer. In one study with 32 Moldovan samples, the pointer landed in Northern Chisinau to Southern Straseni district, but after talking to the authors they said that all pointers for every country in their study were random middle points. The samples in this case were collected 150km to the North.

here some pointers precisely mark the capital of the country or region, but there are also a few exceptions, the "East Rumelian" point is one of them.

I doubt they would be so inconsistent and mark the capital for some regions, and for others a completely random point, it's not even the geographic midpoint of the region or anything.

Yes, this one is definitely from there. Not because of the position of the pointer, but because it says East Rumelia instead of Bulgaria.

Well, they are from Sliven then. The Greek community lives there.

I don't know why even they write Plovdiv there. I asked for details from the author, but he didn't reply.

Out of topic, Thracian Greeks and Thracian Bulgars are identical in K12b. The separation in Eurogenes K13 is the differentiation between Baltic and North Atlantic.

We have a study in Moldova from a Romanian traveller (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zamfir_Arbore), which is dated to 1904. In Medieval Bulgaria there was also mixing, starting with the greatest mixing of Bulgarians and Slavs, which in practice creates the current image of the Bulgarian people, going through mixing with the old local Balkan population, Byzantine population / including Greeks, Armenians and Syrians /, and also the assimilation of later Turkic populations (such as Uzi, Cumans and Pechenegs) and to a lesser extent Genoese and Venetians / mainly in coastal cities /. This is a general situation until the beginning of the 15-16 century. With the conquest of the Balkans by the Ottoman Turks and for the next 5 centuries migration processes began - internal displacements of the Christian population within the Ottoman Empire / voluntary or forced / and external / import of Asia Minor in the Balkans and flight of the Bulgarian population abroad. of the empire or escape to its peripheral parts, where the pressure of power was weaker - it was in the northwest / today territories of Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Austria /, north / Wallachia / and northeast / today's Moldova and Ukraine /

No, I haven't seen it, but it will be interesting to me too. Logically, they should be very identical to those of the Gagauz in Bessarabia, because they are also refugees from northeastern Bulgaria

In Bessarabia there were also some Bulgarians from Western part of Bulgaria. Part of my ancestors and those Bulgarians who live in Olshanka, Ukraine are the purest Northeastern Bulgarians.
Between have you seen Gedmatch Bulgarian results from Bessarabia? I have never seen, but I am very interested

The Bulgarians of Asia Minor, the Asia Minors or also known as Anatolian Bulgarians are a Bulgarian ethnographic group, which was formed mainly as a result of the migration of Bulgarians in the period between 16 - 19 century in Northwest Asia Minor in the area between the cities of Canakkale and Bursa. -later, in 1914, they completely emigrated to Bulgaria. The existence of Bulgarian villages in Anatolia was noted by western travelers such as the Italian Dr Salvatori (1807), the Frenchman J.M. Tancoigne and the Briton George Keppel (1829). Tancoigne describes his experience in Kız-Dervent (located farther east, between İzmit and İznik) as follows:
We were pleasantly surprised by finding in that village women who would walk with their faces uncovered, and men whose manners contradicted the Asian ones entirely. We also discovered dresses of the residents of the Danube's banks and heard a Slavic language in an area where we would regard it as absolutely foreign ... The locals told us they were of Bulgarian origin and their village had been founded almost a century ago by their fathers ... The residents of that village are Christians, Eastern Orthodox. The information about the time of the resettlement and about the Bulgarian districts and settlements from which they came is contradictory. There is unanimity about the reasons why these Bulgarians left their native lands and came to Asia Minor - religious persecution, violence by local Ottoman authorities, Kurds, Dahlians and other bandits and robbers, the search for a calmer life and security. , job search and better livelihood The 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, the first and the second half of the 19th century, until the Liberation of Bulgaria date back to the time of the resettlement and founding of the Bulgarian villages in Northwestern Anatolia. According to the available information, most of the Bulgarian villages in Asia Minor are migrants mainly from Chirpan, Stara Zagora, Yambol in present-day Bulgaria, from the Eastern Rhodopes and from the Kostur region / today in Greece /. established by virtue of the Treaty of Berlin of July 1878 and settled in the region of Varna, Provadia, Novi Pazar, Karnobat and Svishtov. Towards the end of 1913, the property was exchanged with Turks or with entire Turkish villages wishing to emigrate to Turkey. The emigration campaign lasted 3 months, so not a single Bulgarian remained in the Bulgarian villages in Asia Minor. Surrounded by numerous Greek and Turkish villages, Bulgarians were forced to adapt and learn the languages of the majority. According to the memories of the older descendants of Asia Minor, almost all young and old settlers from Anatolia spoke Greek and Turkish, although many of them were illiterate. Many of those who can write and read in Bulgarian are self-taught. These are the reasons why the new words entering the Asia Minor Bulgarian language are mainly of Turkish and Greek origin.

So, the difference between Bulgarians and Gagauzes, old Northeastern Bulgarians and modern Bulgarians in Ukraine is they have additional Greek-like admixture, Caucasus-like admixture and little Turkic

Western Bulgarians are more Slavic/northern genetically. I think east Bulgaria had lot of Turks and Greeks historically, and was later re-settled with Bulgarians from Aegean Greece/Macedonia, who are more southern shifted.

The last sentence is only valid for the Black sea coast. There were no Greeks inland, most Turks have stayed, while Bulgarians from Aegean, Vardar Macedonia and Southern Thrace resettled all over the country. In Plovdiv there is a whole Macedonian neighborhood, in Sofia about half of old "stolichani" have at least partial Macedonian ancestry.

also, there were no Greeks in Plovdiv in the last 20 years, according to wikipedia.

I don't know any native Greeks in Plovdiv, they all left long time ago. The only Greeks today are students, businessmen, or somebody married to a Bulgarian woman.

If I were to guess then probably Turkish, since Northeastern Bulgaria forms the Turkish hotspot from what I recall.

The town of Silistra doesn't have many Turks - 10% officially. In addition it makes no sense to test ethnic Turks and include them in the Bulgarian sample, Turks from Bulgaria have their own sample sheet.

That person is more Southern than some Macedonians. He's an old retired Orthodox priest actually. His grandkids are 3/4 Russian, pretty much assimilated.

He is getting Turk populations, he can be admixed with Crimean Tatars and then it thinks Tatar + Bulgarian = Balkan Turk, or maybe just increased Proto-Bulgar

Thanks, I'll add them, since I have only 2 anyway and I suspect that the unmixed Bulgarians are basically identical anyway in both countries. Now that I have more samples, it does indeed seem that they are identical to Gagauz people genetically, or shall I say the other way around.

Is this then someone's great-grandma? I am asking because they said that they moved from Bessarabia to Crimea in 1800 on one side and 1804 on the other. So to me it looks like the both of them mixed in Crimea, but afterwards the offspring should have mixed with something different from Crimea. Did they specifically mention that for 200 years their ancestors mixed only with Bessarabian Bulgarians in Crimea? Maybe I am confused, but this is what it looks like from the quote.

I only have that quote. Yes, someone's grandmother. The family is heavily mixed with Russians and even local Germans. I presume they live in Crimea because Crimea was populated from all over Russia and Ukraine in the past 100 years, especially after WW2. I guess that grandma's ancestors may have lived in a Bulgarian village or something. Before urbanization and Sovietization assimilation was limited.

A few historical facts

From the second half of the 18th century onwards, the region of the Northern Black Sea Coast became the main direction of Bulgarian migrations. This coincides with Russia's pressure to the south to provide access to the warm Black Sea as a step towards the conquest of Constantinople and the Straits, the main and eternal goal of Russia's imperial policy on the Eastern Question.
The first major migration of Bulgarians within Russia took place during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768 - 1774, which ended with the signing of the peace treaty by Kyuchuk Kaynardzha on 21.07.1774. The establishment of the first compact Bulgarian settlement - Olshanka in Kherson province, founded by over 400 refugee families from the Silistra village of Alfatar, dates back to that time. It is considered at the end of the XVIII century in connection with the two wars of Empress Catherine the Great against the Ottomans from 1767 - 1774 and 1787 - 1791. About 20,000 Bulgarians settled in Southern Bessarabia. At the beginning of the 19th century, Bulgarian settlements were established in the Kherson province and on the Crimean peninsula - Malak and Golyam Boyalak, Ternovka, Old Crimea, Balta Chokrak, Kishlav, Parkani, Kubanka. On the Bucharest Peace Treaty of 16 / 28.05.1812. all of Bessarabia passed to Russia, whose new western border now became the Prut River. The next Russo-Turkish wars of 1806-1812 led to new, even greater migrations of Bulgarians to Southern Russia. and 1828-1829. After the first war, led by Emperor Alexander I (1801-1825), more than 20,000 Bulgarians emigrated, mostly from today's Northern Bulgaria - Razgrad, Silistra, Svishtov, Pleven. By the 1920s, there were about 24,000 Bulgarians in Bessarabia, inhabiting 91 settlements, many of which were founded between 1808 and 1822. The largest migration of Bulgarians was after the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829. Russia, as the victor of the war, introduced a special article. 13 in the Edirne Peace Treaty of 2 / 14.09.1829, which allows all Bulgarians involved in the war to move to Russia. Bulgarian refugees are compactly moving to rural areas in the southern Russian provinces, where they are creating many of their purely Bulgarian settlements.
Under the Edirne Peace Treaty of 1829, hundreds of thousands of Bulgarians emigrated, mostly from the southeastern and northeastern Bulgarian lands. The exact number of migrants is still unclear. It varies from 86,700 to 130,000 - 140,000 according to Ivan Meshteryuk. The emigrants are mainly from Edirne, Burgas, Varna, Stara Zagora, Sliven, Yamboli and the villages around them.
In 1831-1834. due to the lack of enough free land in Bessarabia, some of the settlers re-emigrated to Dobrogea, Wallachia and Moldova. Thus, by 1835, more than 61,000 Bulgarian settlers lived in Bessarabia, of which about 33,000 - 35,000 were newcomers - after the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829.

On the territory of the Crimean peninsula compact masses of Bulgarians began to settle in the early nineteenth century. They originated from the Strandzha villages Gramatikovo and Malko Tarnovo. In the official census of 1897 the number of Crimean Bulgarians amounted to 7528 people. The civil war in Russia from 1918 to 1920 had a negative effect on the Bulgarian diaspora on the Crimean peninsula. In the period 1921 - 1922 many Bulgarians died of starvation, and at the end of 1929 and the beginning of 1930 a forced collectivization was carried out; dekulakization sends the best Bulgarian farmers to Siberia The Stalinist regime carried out another eviction of Bulgarians living compactly there until 1944. They were accused of being enemies, collaborators of the occupying German regime. Before the forced evictions, according to official statistics, there were about 12,500 Bulgarians. They were scattered in many parts of the Soviet Union and did not allow them to settle compactly - some went to the Urals, others to Bashkortostan, others to northern Kazakhstan or throughout Siberia. Many of these people assimilate and forbid them to speak Bulgarian

That person is more Southern than some Macedonians. He's an old retired Orthodox priest actually. His grandkids are 3/4 Russian, pretty much assimilated.

Not an unusual result for a Bulgarian from Macedonia or Thrace. Most Bulgarians in Bessarabia come from Eastern Bulgaria, particulary Thrace region.

is that 23andme?

admixture calculators are free.

just download your raw data:
https://www.yourdnaguide.com/rawdata

then upload it to gedmatch:
https://www.gedmatch.com/login1.php
https://www.yourdnaguide.com/upload-to-gedmatch

you can also check your results without uploading anywhere with admixturestudio:

I can run your kit through ads/gedmatch if that's too much work for you. But you should send me the raw data.

Actually this companies just try to make a big picture for you. Many companies and amateur researchers have different samples and DNA test style. I don't trust my Gedmatch percentage, also my G25 percantage too. And absolutely commercial test companies database too. I'm not %40 Early Indoeuropean according to G25. We can only imagine where we are from. This technology era, we don't have any chance.

Also commercial test matching algorithm...Me and my mom have less common dna then our common matches. That's bullshit.

Yes between admixture studio is more accurate , than commercial tests for me, this tool analyzed my Greek and Balkan segments, what 23andme gave me and in which regions I do have Balkan relatives and it reads Bulgarian_Burgas, Pomak_Komotini, Bulgarian_Ruse, Turk_Kavala , Bulgarian_Northwest, Greek_Istanbul, Turk_Drama, Macedonian_Greece it is much more accurate, than 23andme or MyHeritage locations, that gave me Romania for some reason

It's normal for Southwest Russians to get up to about 8-9% in West Asian and for South Bulgarians to reach 14%. Some score even 16-17% and they are not mixed with Turks. That's why he gets 12%.

I do agree, however, Bulgarians with 16-17% West Asian are definitely mixed with Turks or Armenians or Circassians even if they do not know that. Most people here have ancestral knowledge for the last 200 years at best and that explains some unknown admixtures.

200 years is enough...Turk/Armenian/Circassian ancestry gets absorbed easily on such timescales. West Asian is not always such, sometimes it's simply a partially misplaced East Med/Red Sea due to low SNP overlap with GEDmatch calculators on the new generation of tests.

Autosomal DNA admixtures usually circulate for about 300 years, then there are the admixture events in history and the mixed areas. Also, contact zones around the borders. Although what you are saying about the SNP issue is correct, I have seen these blips when one component is skyrocketing at the expense of another, like the North Atlantic variations in Bulgaria, or the West/East med flipping.

His Mongoloid percentage doesn't indicate anything Tatar. West Asian is not the main Tatar or Turkic marker. I think it's normal for a full Bulgarian to score 11-12% West Asian. But in his case that may as well be some kind of recombination.

In Romania's South some of the popular surnames are already of obvious Bulgarian or South Slavic origin. In reality the geneflow is probably even stronger than this, but the problem with identifying that is that the most popular surnames in Romania are simple paternal given names. Here in Moldova it is simpler, because surnames usually give a hint towards the ethnicity of the original bearer of the surname.

Do you think that the original Romanian/Vlach population from the Medieval age was genetically more like the Albanians before absorbing the Slavic element?

Somewhere around that probably...modern Vlachs from around Balkans (Serbia doesn't count since those are fairly recent migrants from Oltenia) are closest to Albanians/Greeks/North Macedonians. Maybe that means that they were genetically replaced by locals, or maybe that means that they kept to themselves and this is how the first Eastern Romance people looked like.

We have 127 samples in the project that I've posted in this thread so far, and there are 148 more that I have gathered since then. I will update you soon. But from what I can see already, the average barely changes.

In the meantime, here are 48 Bulgarians from this region around Central Balkan mountains.

Hey guys, I didn't forget about you.
We have 127 samples in the project that I've posted in this thread so far, and there are 148 more that I have gathered since then. I will update you soon. But from what I can see already, the average barely changes.

In the meantime, here are 48 Bulgarians from this region around Central Balkan mountains.

His and mom's full results from Anthrogenica (https://anthrogenica.com/showthread.php?24920-Bulgarian-results-GEDMATCH-MyHeritage-(23andMe-useless-for-Balkan-Tatars-)&p=806197#post806197)...both look Bulgarian in K13, but on 23andme 20%+ West Asian and Turkish regions in Turkey 100% confirm the presence of Turkish admixture.
Also him having more West Asian than the mom, might mean that the dad also has a similar admix as them

So what you think is, that his 2 parents has either Turkish or Tatar recent ancestry without knowing this? It looks to me like small region in Dobruja where he is from just have this kind of shift and that's all.

I noticed later that he said his mom has origins from a Tatar village in Bulgaria. I guess that explains it, but a 30% West Asian to 4% East Asian/Siberian is too small for a Tatar. Looks more like Turkish to me. Also he has more West Asian than his mom, meaning that the dad should have a similar amount.

That's what I am talking about, if it is from both parents then it could be that that is how all Bulgarians from those mostly Tatar/Turkish villages genetically look like

I wouldn't say that all Bulgarians from villages with Tatars score like that, because these are just 3 samples. It might be a case of cultural + religious assimilation. And if I am being honest, these results don't look Tatar at all. Tatars and Turks are quite different genetically, with Turks being significantly more West Eurasian. I have a Tatar from Northern Dobruja in Romania and that person has 26% East Eurasian and very little East and West Med compared to them.

Yes, but with this amount of East Asian it would make him almost fully Balkan Turk, which is very unlikely, I am pretty sure he would know if he was. In my opinion it is most likely from ancient Bulgars, because Dobruja is where they were in big amounts, so maybe some people carry not a small amounts of it in some places.

Why are 23andme regions so important for you? It should be taken like a similarity, for example almost every Pole can get Ukrainian, Russian regions without having ancestry from there, just because of genetic similarity, Balkanites also can have regions from other Balkan countries, than they are from. Bulgarian with this shift of course will have a lot of common with Anatolian Turks, because every Bulgarian has big percentage of ancient Anatolian/Thracian genetic + additionaly this individual has Central Asian.

Have you seen too much results from this region to be so sure, he isn't ethnic Bulgarian? Well, my Dobruja Bulgarian ancestry has also trace of something "exotic", it isn't Central Asian, but if we delete Eastern Eurasian in that guy we can get something Iranian/Kurdish-like, which also exists in my Dobruja Bulgarian ancestry, I think it is not coincidence, we just do not have many samples from some regions in Dobruja and you compare this individual to Bulgarians from other regions.

Your samples don't change much, because they are in minority anyway.
2 samples out of 27 (or 7%) for NW come from your sources.
6 of 31 (or 19%) for SW
So you can safely use what's on G25 already.

But the new averages that I haven't posted yet are:

NW - 48 samples

Yes, quite a lot actually, and the overwhelming majority score just Balkan. In the past up to about 10% West Asian was possible because components were not as balanced, but the same people nowadays have almost unanimously Balkan.

In the meantime, here are 48 Bulgarians from this region around Central Balkan mountains.

https://i.ibb.co/dB7m4mJ/image.png

Do you know from which slope of the mountain are the samples? I've heard that there is a big difference between the two sides of the mountain although it might not be the case from what I see. Those from Teteven and Troyan should plot with Vratsa presumably.

From what I've seen they should plot together with Vratsa, meaning that they should plot to the north of the national average. But only those from the northern side while those on the southern side should be similar to the national average. Anthropologically they are also distinct as they lack med types (popular in the plains and South Bulgaria) and are mainly dinaric and occasionally baltic.

Even those in Vratsa are not homogeneous. I don't know what you've seen. Those hugging the Danube are identical to the Romanians on the other side, because those people are often descending from the same stock. Many people in NW Bulgaria were partially Romanian not long ago and many people in bordering counties from Romania have romanised Bulgarian surnames. They will have anywhere from 40% ish to 50% ish in the sum of North Atlantic+Baltic

They will have anywhere from 40% ish to 50% ish in the sum of North Atlantic+Baltic

The Romanian influence is situated just around the riverbank in 3-4 hotspots but considering most of NW Bulgaria which is also the plains to the South and also some mountain parts, there is no visible Romanian influence there. Usually, the modern descendants of the Romanians (called Vlachs here) still remember their origins. They are not fully assimilated but in the statistics, they sign as Bulgarian for the most part. Some are assimilated (I am an example). The likeness of the Southern Romanians and the Northern Bulgarians goes to the Medieval age when there was one country. My theory is that the Romanians would have ended up as South Slavs if the Bulgarian tsardom was able to retain Wallachia for another 200 years let say. Also, the two nations are made of the same elements - Slavs and Thracians and some other similar influences like Goths, Cumans and other elements that produced the same kind of blend and also the important influence of the Orthodox religion and the single state (for a certain period). In 17-19 centuries, Romania became a refuge for many Bulgarians. I was even able to find via MyHeritage a Romanian person related to me not by my Romanian side but by my Bulgarian side. I believe the Bulgarians added more to the similarities although there might have been some important Romanian influence back in the Medieval times, I believe this might have caused some changes in the Bulgarian language by the adoption of the analytism and the î sound.

Don't forget the population exchange, which is relevant for SE Romania and NE Bulgaria.

Hey @Ion, is it possible for you to post all the individual k13 results for the people from the different cities in Bulgaria? This would be interesting.

Sure, I will post once I'm at the computer (probably in the weekend).

For most I have just the province, since I didn't want to go as deep as with my research on Romanians, but here's where I know that the origin comes from towns/cities:
