Post your updates.

Mine barely changed although it did give me about a 9% increase in French and German. Was hoping for more regions.

I don't know why Germany and Switzerland appear before France does now. I have no known Swiss (German, French or Italian, I don't even have any matches from Swiss French regions) ancestors and I have a very distant German ancestry. I wonder if it's due to IBD matches of close relatives.

Italian doubled which is more accurate, but somehow lost all of my German.

They really went above my expectations for this, I'm much more happy with this update than the Ancestry one.

Do you actually have ancestry from Algeria or does it give you that based on IBD matches of close relatives?

And yes this update is way better!

I have ancestry from Algeria, my tribe is divided on the border of Algeria and Morocco. 1/4 of my family is Algerian. I don't have ancestry in Marrakesh-Safi, so they didn't update the regions I think.

I generally interpret these inaccuracies in country regions to be from errors in the IBD matching/assignment phase. In my case, no way Germany (and esp. Switzerland) should come before France.

From Moldova but Slavic ancestry on both sides.

They got rid of Greece sadly.... Also of Ukraine.

I now get Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia.

And I thought my west Asian and Jewish would disappear but west Asia increased a bit lol.

Sadly still no region for west asia and Italy and french/German :((((

That's what I was most excited about yikes.

Also, I got Spanish hahahaha https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201022/68febed6cad6f70631ff0962887b7647.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201022/e9eb5a845fdf62ab7f83869490dc3b61.jpg

And now most of the regions I get are from eastern Romania, mainly northeast, close to Moldova.

No, but I had 1% West Asian before.

The new DNA results from my father, if I put aside the extra-European contribution (0.6%, like my mother) which is certainly "noise" because not detected by Gedmatch nor Global 25 (which models the person with populations ancestral, including non-European), the rest is "good".

My mother gets more or less 0.7% Sub-Saharan that neither Global 25 detects (even as an archaic population), neither Gedmatch, and nor David from Eurogenes manages to detect (he told me, after sending the raw data of my mother, to detect a signal of more or less 0.4% typed " Moroccan ", but claims that the signal is too weak for us to speak of real contribution, recent contribution in any case, it could be noise as well).

In addition, my mother's close cousin, who therefore has a Sardinian part (from the close family), does not obtain this percentage on 23andme. I also noticed that the percentage does not increase over the generations: I get the same extra-European percentage as my mother. I don't get any on Gedmatch (Sub-Saharan type, I means), on Myheritage, on FTDNA, and the Global 25, the same for my mother.

In general, a person with a Sub-Saharan contribution will attest genealogically (which is not the case for me: neither on my mother's side, nor on my father's side; I even have DNA kits from several of my cousins) as member RyoHazuki and Celestia, appears on the ancestral populations of Global 25 and on Gedmatch.

It also sometimes happens that 23andme does not indicate a sub-Saharan percentage, but does indicate it on the Global 25 and Gedmatch (this is the case for some Portuguese members for example).

Seems redundant to have a separate Sardinian population as well as a Sardinia region for Italian on 23andme.

They should just make a only Sardinian category.

It is necessary to decipher about to the various inherited contributions:
My southern European contribution is slightly inflated, because according to 23andme I would have inherited 26.7% Sardinian ("southern European" categorized) from my mother's side, but also 1.7% categorized also as "southern European" from my father's side, which gives in all 28.4%.

What you have to understand is that my real "southern European" contribution (in 23andme) is 26.7%, because my father's "southern European" contribution is simply French, which must therefore be added to my French contribution.

Amazing how much more precise it is. My mum is an almost exact 50/50 Paki/Spanish split and they narrowed down her Northern Asia to Siberia again. No (Sorry that came across as a bit more blunt than I intended). :p I'm not sure what G25 is looking at but I come out with a big chunk of Scandinavian on that which is most likely similarity but not real.

Anyway I wasn't going to have a drink because it's a work night but this was a good enough excuse and a surprise.

I put on this to get into the mood. :)

It seems they still keeps Balkan and Thracian Turks as one of the references of Anatolian. My breakdown is similar to yours. In contrast to ancestry breakdown, regions are more accurate for Turkey now but less accurate for Bulgaria. They also added Greece with 5 new regions. Probably, I will have no Greece next update :D because they remove it every 2 updates :D

I guess they are more accurate, but also more boring. I am surprised that my italian has dropped (I am 1 /16 Italian), I am also surprised that my Jewish percentage remains the same (It probably comes from my southern Italian )

It is terrible tbh. I mean, even MyHeritage's results that balances my admixture by using Eastern Europe and Anatolia seem more reasonable than the current 23andme result.

Which regions did you get in Turkey and Bulgaria? Also wonder if you get Macedonia in Greece?

I was expecting to get new regions, especially in Balkans as I had none, and it is still the same. Plus my Turkish regions(Muğla & Konya) removed. A broad match on Eastern Anatolia added instead.

On the other hand, regions are still the same in my cousin:

https://i.ibb.co/WtZ000H/Ads-z.png

Only difference is boosted Anatolia.

Do you have real ancestry from the areas you don't get regions for? I think some of these results are due to their algorithms just trying to decipher your dna and not that you have real ancestry from these places. This is when they don't have really accurate panels or when they put some populations in too broad a category. That is why they will disappear when they update. In the past I've had French & German, Spanish & Portuguese and Scandinavian. All gone in a puff of smoke. :) I think if it isn't real or if your ancestry is too distant you won't get regions. Anyway 23&Me's regions are a load of twaddle. They completely miss a county where I have ancestry from and have at no 4 the other county I have ancestry from and I get British regions which are apparently Highly Likely when I have no recent British ancestry.

I've lost my German completely and my Lithuanian and Hungarian regions. They've done me dirty considering that pretty much every calc (and G25) show I'm around 10% German. They've also upped my Jewish by a tiny amount.

They want to reduce minor ancestry and make everyone 100% something, do not pay attention to it

Interesting and anything is possible. I watched in the past some really interesting Who Do You Think You Are programs about Billy Connelly and Olivia Colman who both found out they have an Indian female ancestor from the time of British India. One of Billy's Irish ancestors who was a soldier in India had an Indian wife and one of Olivia's English ancestors had an Indian wife. They both never knew about this until it was researched. While I still think it is possible to objectively ascertain that there was less miscegenation in the British Empire than in the Portuguese, Spanish and possibly even French Empires, I think it did go on more than many like to acknowledge, and certainly at least some of those Brits with dark and ambiguous phenotypes may well have Black or South Asian ancestors.

It would be very interesting to discover something like that. I've always been fascinated by the Raj and British India. I think this is because I know so many Anglo-Indians so I know a lot about the country. Also one of my father's best mates was an Anglo-Indian man who served on the railways in India. Both mine and mother's West Asian has now partially absorbed into our Greek category. ~4-5% so a decently big chunk.

We both have Sudanese trace ancestry. Actually my mom's North African went up. Her East Asian is totally gone now. Her Turkish and Italian regions are now gone.

For some reason, my "Iranian, Caucasian & Mesopotamian" shot way up and now I'm connected to Eastern Turkey. My Anatolian actually went down (moved to Greek?) Istanbul is a new ancestor region for me. Denizli is still there. But, my Italian regions are now gone as well.

I'm pretty much interested in the regions which Balkan Turks get in Anatolia. In the past, I came across that there are hotspots in Konya, Kastamonu, Çorum, Elazığ, Erzincan. Chipset 23andme use aimed to investigate your recent admixture in the last 200-300 years. It seems that early migrations from Anatolia(Kayı, Karesi, Saruhan, Menteşe...) are out of range with the current technology. Yet more recent migrations that probably roots in Celali Rebellions are seemed to be traceable.

This is updated result of @Deniz. (has 6% EE in Gedmatch, but at the same time low Anatolian in 23andme. I wonder what makes that difference.)

He had 16% WA in the former one, now 14%. He also had no regions, now has three.

The other region under Balkan is Vidin.

Here are my results updated! Apparently I get Greek as a high likely match? Could it be a proxy for Albanian maybe, since I know Zadar had a lot of Arbanasi and still does. No more Broadly European stuff and much less Eastern European! Good update overall, the only thing missing is my Italian ancestry, or maybe it's actually Italianized Albanian which was common in Zadar. I don't know anymore but I think this is the end to my genetical story. Also, to the ones that didn't get the update, you need to turn on your beta testing access which you can toggle on and off here : https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013592713

Thanks for posting!

The other region under Balkan is Vidin.

https://i.ibb.co/qFrbTcB/Ads-z.png

I'll share what other Balkan Turks get with you, but almost all of them are still in older version. I can not compare my results with them now.

I think, this one looks suitable for Deniz's ancestry. He is more Northern shifted than us, and he is modeled 85% Bulgarian on G25 as far as I remember -or Gagauz-. He is also from Razgrad.

In contrast to him, we are more Southern and Turks in Thrace and Southern Bulgaria have different admixtures than Turks in Northern Bulgaria.

Yes, Erzincan could be related with Celali rebellions. I think Sivas appears because of Erzincan.

I think I score a bit higher Iran Neolithic than other Greek Mainlanders in G25. There is a small eastern shift but I don't know why.
It is not consistent with my know ancestry indeed.

It's absurd the recent ancestor locations don't work for you for being as much as half your ancestry. I see this happen for some people getting F&G with most all their recent ancestors being that group, yet many Anglo-Americans with very little if any actual German heritage will get a few regions :picard1:

In future updates I'd like them to separate France, Switzerland, and Belgium from Germany and the Netherlands. The Netherlands I'm fairly certain isn't even closer to Northern French than they are to most British people.

Could be something old like Mardaites?

Yes, it could be from West Asian people who settled Mainland Greece during Middle-Ages. Maybe there is such kind of admixture in some parts of Mainland Greece until nowadays.
The other possibility is an Anatolian or islander ancestor that goes back 4-5 generations but chances are small based on my known ancestry.

Yes there are many possibilities although for someone with Laconian ancestry it must be a common thing and not that off ,most of my Laconian/Maniot matches score West Asian.

Interesting. I saw that on Eurogenes K13 you receive 2.69% South_Asian. In comparison, I receive 2.02%.

However, while you receive 0.67% higher SA than me on GEDMatch, you receive 1.5% higher than I do on 23andMe.

I wonder why! I suppose the question is should I have more on 23andMe or should you have less. I also receive 2% "Central Asia-South" (Primarily located in: Afghanistan, Pakistan) on AncestryDNA for whatever it's worth.

Overall I think it’s way better than Ancestry. However my grandfather got his results updated and it looks highly inaccurate. Here’s his old results: 103099

Here are his new results: 103100

He has no known Iberian ancestry and from what I can tell, he’s half French (from Quebec) and half British & Irish. I don’t know any reasons he comes out like this.

I think it’s better to stick to paper trails, at least for me.

And V6 will include half the snps of v5. For the sake of “efficiency.”

This is really sad. I administrate both V4 and V5 data. Because this update basically dissolves "broadly European" and that makes some 10%, the results are no longer comparable!

On the left v5.2 and on the left v5.9. Dutch/Indonesian mother and an unknown father. Originally I suspected him to be just Italian, but my Greek&Balkan is pretty inflated compared to other half or full Italians I have seen. It is precisely a map that demonstrates the great majority homogeneity of France.

Many of the central area has a NW part ... even the Poitou charente area.

When in the South-West of France, there are areas that have a large Central-like part, more than Basque-like.

In truth, only one area of southwestern France is Basque-like, but we can also see a "central" part, the area above the most "basque-like" area has a red part (basque like) but also dark blue (North-Western) ...

Basically, it's much more complex than "the south of france is spain and the north of france is england, and the central france is just between both", in reality it is not that at all.

The term "southern shifted" doesn't really have an explicit definition. You have to use much more explicit terms: the poitou charante on the map has an area with a dark yellow (SO), light yellow (Central like) and dark red part (south west, typical Basque), but other areas of the poitou-charente have more light yellow part mixed with dark blue (northwestern).

In reality, if we put aside the pure Basques and the Bretons of the West (and not of the East, who are closer to the French), there are some genetic little barriers on the map, we can see, but which are not insurmountable, so that my father would be closer to a guy from Burgundy or Poitou-Charente than to an Englishman or a Dutchman.

What is especially important is the dark blue (north-western) and light yellow contribution, a little dark yellow in some areas (but never completely)...

In the end, if we were to compare with what we call "Italy" (which is a recent creation) France is much more homogeneous even with the genetic mini-barriers (if we put aside part of Brittany and the pure Basques); we can really speak of "French people" in genetic terms, even including nuances. While we cannot speak of "Italian people" (a type of Veneto is closer to another individual of Lombardy or Friuli than a type of Naple or Company or even Abruzzo).

The French, for the most part, are closer to each other than to other populations (if we put aside, once again, the West Bretons and the pure Basques), genetically speaking.

Ok, thanks.

The background of my question was I heard eastern Ashkenazis are often somewhat mixed with Eastern European (up to 10%) while such from Germany are not and more "pure". I guess 23andMe works with sequences when indentifying AJ heritage and that mentioned admixture is part of AJ. The differences I talked about would probably just show up, if you could "switch off" the AJ component and look what different full AJ people do score. At some then EE would show up and at some not. It´s absolutely interesting to have AJ component, no doubt, but actually AJ component somwhat covers what´s behind in more general terms.
