View Full Version : Is it worth getting Ancestry DNA and 23andMe?

I recently got a 23andMe test and am quite happy with the results, but was a bit disappointed that not many people integrated a tree into their profiles, so its nigh on impossible to figure out how I'm related to any of my matches. A relative showed me her Ancestry DNA results and Ancestry appear to have more features geared towards genealogy such as ThruLines and predicted common ancestors.
Has anyone else purchased both a 23andMe test and an Ancestry DNA test? It feels like kind of a weird thing to do but if it will help me with my family tree I might opt for it when it goes on sale.
Has anyone had success in tracing matches in 23andMe? It seems like their test is more geared towards health and, dare I say, novelty factors such as traits than it is towards serious genealogy.
I've upload to GEDMatch and MyHeritage but not much headway with these so far either.

I would just get 23 for the raw data.

Could you elaborate on this? I have downloaded my Raw DNA from 23andMe and imported into GEDMatch and MyHeritage, which has some free features like basic DNA Matching.

You get the raw data from Ancestry also. If you are into your family tree I'd recommend Ancestry. I have 23andme also.

For all its novelty 23's V series chips aren't particularly any better than a low level Gedmatch calculator. As Graham stated below 23 and ancestry are best for matches and family tree work/attaching your tree to a kit. I would just download DNA studios if you are interested in ethnic calculators. I have found all the updates on 23 and Ancestry to be fairly useless. They always seem rushed and their reference kits are just as few as DNA calculators.

Yes, atleast I know the link between my mother and one man and his descendants of one of my 23andMe matches, through a common and not very usual surname.
MyHeritage is better for this, but I have a tree in MH since 2010.
I didn´t use never AncestryDna.
And I don´t know wich platform works better for English about those issues.

Do you reckon due to the decline in DNA sales that's starting to occur, Ancestry and 23andMe might start allowing users to import Raw DNA from other sites for a small fee? Might be a way to keep business flowing in from some enthusiasts for the next few years.

I'm not particularly interested in ethnicity calculations as I can understand my ethnicity rather well from genealogy.
Just share your Gedmatch (Eurogenes K13, K15, Dodecad K12b, MDLP K23b, etc.) for starters :p

I got them for mostly ancient calculations, likewise I know my genealogy so the modern ethnic stuff really is no use to me.

I don't know how business is but I'd suggest they stay new and not stale. Lot's of ancient dna for them to play about with for the future rather than todays political borders.
Doesn't seem right that companies could charge you extra for your Raw DNA. Don't give them any ideas like that.

I hear in general it’s not worth any DNA test because there is an undisclosed party it goes to which is written on the box of all tests.
With this aside, I have heard that 23 and me is better for health reasons to see your epigenetics while ancestry is better for the latter (finding people you are related to)

It wouldn't be charging extra, it would be charging less, instead of paying another £80 for an Ancestry test, they could allow you to upload your 23andMe data for a smaller fee like £20 or so, to utilise Ancestry's unique features.

Raw data from ancestry is better. I would just save more money and get a full genome test that way you’ll never have to get another test again. If I knew what I know now I would just get nebula full genome test(raw data) and 23 and me(for matching) and that would of saved me a shit load on all the other tests I done. And nebula saves your results on a blockchain so it’s super secure from hacks.

23andme has nothing like this though. My Ancestry dna matches are full of stuff like this. It can even fill in peoples trees with more information from groups of matches.

Ancestry, MyHeritage and V4 23&Me's raw dna is much better than 23&Me's v3 raw dna. I think MyHeritage's raw dna is the best even though their Ancestry Comp is one of the worst.

I think they are both worth buying over other companies. 23andMe has the best inhouse calculator by far and Ancestry has solid raw DNA, good genealogy stuff, and an improving calculator.

I have the V3 23andme raw dna and Ancestry on Gedmatch. There was little difference in the result.

Aren't full genome tests pointless for ethnicity though? I read that only a tiny fraction of the genome has DNA mutations which can serve as markers for ethnicity. The tests may be more useful for DNA matches.

Yeah, this is what I saw that made me want to get Ancestry DNA. 23andMe's tree feature is really crap.

Do you know what happens if you try and import Ancestry's Raw DNA into a Y DNA calculator like Morley's DNA?

It worked when I tried Ancestry there. Though it is basic.
For some reason 23andme went backwards with its Ydna and MTdna. I done my test back in 2011 and has got worse.

Having used Nebula raw data sometimes the differences of Gedmatch are significant other times they are not. Sometimes the SNP utilized are not much different sometimes they can be 2000 different. Now with all the other services generally the same data with some minor differences here and there in the calculations.

Just curious. How many Y chromsome SNPs did Ancestry test vs 23andMe? I've counted my 23andMe SNPs and it adds up to 3500 for YDNA.
