I thought that you guys were talking about me in private and I wasn't looped in on the context, because that a was a weird first impression. Both my and Nurzat's Ukrainian sides are local, so it makes sense that they are partially mixed with Moldovans/Romanians. I know for a fact that old rural Ukrainians in R. Moldova are on average more Southern-shifted than those in Ukraine and that seems to be the case for those in Romania too. But my 25% won't really manifest themselves on such calculators, because they should cancel out with my Southern Moldovan admixture. That's why I score like someone from the Central region.

By the way, my mom's huge distances kind of prove that she's a mix of different ethnicities, in her case 50% Southern Moldovan and 50% Moldovan Ukrainian.

The population of Moldova was extremely unstable with a lot of movements, as I can see in church records. It was more an exception that a family stayed in the same place, mostly only peasants. City inhabitants and nobles moved a lot.

I was going to say maybe your dad has Bessarabian German ancestry but they were never that far north Moldova. I think you have Gothic ancestry.

I don't have other Moldovan kits to check outside of my family in order to look at their closest matches and shared cM on MyHeritage, but I will ask some users from Romania to post their results from the 1st page here. If their results are significantly different from what my dad and I are getting, then there might be something dodgy here.

we're similar enough, in the overall mix, I think, but it's strange MyHeritage says 90% Balkan for him and 60% for me, where do they come with this difference from. anyway, I think the companies are best only for getting the raw data, and we can look at Eurogenes runs on Germatch and Global25 to get a better picture, not to company estimates. although 23andme sees me 46% Balkan and 42% East Euro, looks quite in line with being half SouthwestUkrainian and half WestMoldovan - the Ukrainian side getting some remote German admix would explain the lower Baltic and higher Farmer % I may have gotten from dad's side compared to unmixed Ukrainians.

regarding the NW scores discussion above - on MyHeritage I have 4% Scandinavian but have 0 on 23andme.

There are serious overlaps between Balkan and Eastern European on MyHeritage. Hopefully their supposed update this year will make the estimate more reliable for comparison purposes.

Maybe your dad's more of a Polish-Ukrainian extraction (which as far as I remember, you did know that) which leads to a bigger similarity with Germans in terms of shared DNA, rather than Russian or Balkan.

How many Germs/Swiss/Austrians do you get in total?

Also, how many W. Balkanite matches do you get or can approximate based on your nmb of German/Austrian/Swiss/French matches? It's clear that around 1/6th of those are W Balkanites, 1/6th Poles/Ukrainians and around 1/4ths are Romanians.

Might be interesting to see if Moldovans get fewer W. Balkanite matches due to a larger geographical distance and more isolation compared to Romanians.

I also get only 3 Moldovans and my gf 2.

Myheritage ethnicity calculator is a joke especially for people who are mostly Southeast-European genetically, or mixed. Myheritage gave me literally 95% Balkan (said that I'm 95% Eastern European).

Some of my GEDmatch results, clear evidence of East/West Slavic admixture, not just Southeast European. I think most of it comes from my Hungarian side, I mean ,,normal'' Hungarian:

It's hard to tell, because each match needs to be opened and looked at. For example what you quoted before for your girlfriend is a complete joke ("She also has 140 German and 53 British, while I have 188 G. and 76 English."), unless you looked at each one's family tree and ethnicity estimate.
That is because MyHeritage automatically assigns the flag of the country based on location and you can't change that, even if in your family tree the location is shown as Moldova/Romania/any other country. 90% of Romanians/Moldovans will have foreign flags, because they are tested in the diaspora. That's why I asked you to verify the ethnicity of people with German/Austrian/any other foreign flags.

You don't understand the Balkan component then. Bulgarians don't score as much as you do, but in the range of 60-70% with the rest being Greek & South Italian. It is probably based on Croats or Serbs, whom you are genetically close to.

It depends on your definition of accurate. Their v5.9 version resembles running a model on G25 with 1X or even 2X distance, hence minor components are neglected.

we're similar enough, in the overall mix, I think, but it's strange MyHeritage says 90% Balkan for him and 60% for me, where do they come with this difference from. anyway, I think the companies are best only for getting the raw data, and we can look at Eurogenes runs on Germatch and Global25 to get a better picture, not to company estimates. although 23andme sees me 46% Balkan and 42% East Euro, looks quite in line with being half SouthwestUkrainian and half WestMoldovan - the Ukrainian side getting some remote German admix would explain the lower Baltic and higher Farmer % I may have gotten from dad's side compared to unmixed Ukrainians.

regarding the NW scores discussion above - on MyHeritage I have 4% Scandinavian but have 0 on 23andme.
