Remarkable man. Don't see many of his ilk amongst the British famous these days.
I'll always remember that voice of his. So distinct and so entrancing to listen to. His role in Will 'O Wisp was sheer magic for me as a child.

But, he is correct in that Parkinson show. The working man - and the people of today - are not satisfied in their lives and their jobs because they are brought up to believe that they are worth something better than their lot.

Prince Charles said the very same thing not so long a go:

"What is wrong with people nowadays? Why do they all seem to think they are qualified to do things far above their capabilities?"

"This is all to do with the learning culture in schools. It is a consequence of a child-centered education system which tells people they can become pop stars, high court judges or brilliant TV presenters or infinitely more competent heads of state without ever putting the necessary work or having the natural ability,"

"It is a result of social utopianism which believes humanity can be genetically engineered to contradict the lessons of history."

He was a British institution. Even though he made us all laugh, he was a very sad and lonely man.

Even though he made us all laugh, he was a very sad and lonely man.

And that is the greatest irony about comedians. They are often reclusive, lonely, depressive characters just bursting to the seams with emotions.
