IMO Azerbaijan should donate Nakhchivan to Armenia and take Karabakh for themselves.
Borders drawn very dumb. Who's to blame, Stalin or Gorbachev?

Azerbaijan and Armenia should unify into the first phenotype based nation: Armenoidia. No more brother wars.

The borders were made to initiate conflicts. Right now Stalin laugh at us all from the hell.

The current Karabagh belongs to Azerbaijan according law, historically to Urartrians who don’t exist anymore. During the history it belonged to Greeks, Armenians, Caucasians, Iranics, Arabs. Since 1000 years to (Azerbaijani/Iranian)Turks, but there is no guarantee for the furure. Now the history plays it into Azerbaijani hands, but we dont know what could happen tomorrow. Personally i say Azerbaijan and i was really happy about the news that they won.

It's complicated. The size of this entire territory being quarreled over is roughly just one US county.

The USSR designated it as part of Azerbaijan SSR because when the Russian Empire first conquered the regions, both Azerbaijan and Karabakh were part of the Safavid empire, but the Safavids hadn't taken Armenia, so on their maps Azerbaijan and Karabakh were one big region. The Soviet Union followed the Russian Empire’s path of oppressing non-Russians.

Much of the present day problems between Armenia and Azerbaijan originate from this. Shortly after the Armenian Genocide, the Soviet Union annexed Armenia. The US thought it would be useful to have some bases near the Soviet border so they were appeasing Turks for a while. Meanwhile, Stalin was trying his hardest to sway the Turks over to his side, he even cut big chunks of Armenia off and gave them to Azerbaijan.

So basically everyone was wanting to get on Turkey's good side up until the collapse of the Soviet Union, and also Stalin wanted to give the Azeris a border with Turkey. The population of Nakhichevan went from 70% Armenian to 30% over the Soviet period.

Stalin demanded more control on Bosphorus and the Dardanelles Straits, also he wanted to seize some Turkish provinces in the Eastern Anatolia, as US didn't want Soviet Navy to freely roam both in Mediterranean and Black Sea, backed up by Turkey. And eventually Turkey got accepted into NATO just to block Soviet Union.

Soviets also gave the Georgians the Javakheti province which is historically Armenian. It's standard divide and conquer strategy. Ironically, when Soviet Union collapsed, Georgian mafia sold all weapons really cheap to Turkey.
