In Russian anthropology, the Nenets are included in the Uralic race. Aksyanova calls the Nenets type as North Ural type.

Ненцы по всему этническому ареалу от Белого моря до Таймыра характеризуются, в сравнении с энцами и особенно с нганасанами, значительным ослаблением монголоидных особенностей и уменьшением многих размеров головы и лица, прежде всего широтных; длина тела у них малая – до 160 см в среднем у мужчин. Несмотря на высокий по западносибирскому масштабу уровень монголоидности, физический тип ненцев включает очень характерные уральские черты, а именно, мягкие волосы, ослабление пигментации волос и глаз, менее уплощенное лицо, высокий процент вогнутой формы спинки носа при крайней редкости выпуклой формы, относительно широкий в крыльях нос. Это позволяет включать данный комплекс в состав контактной уральской, или западносибирской по Багашеву, расы в качестве одного из самых монголоидных и, очевидно, автохтонных на Крайнем Севере вариантов. Я предложила назвать его «североуральским» типом уральской расы.


Расовый тип ненцев (которым очерчивается северная периферия уральской расы) включается антропологами в ее состав с середины ХХ в.: Шлугером и Чебоксаровым по отношению к европейским тундровым ненцам Малой и Большой Земли как лапоноидный тип уральской расы, а Дебецом и Левиным как уральский тип (или раса), в отношении прежде всего азиатских тундровых групп, включая и енисейский вариант (или тип) ненцев Северного Ямала. Сам же С.А. Шлугер рассматривал енисейский вариант в составе южносибирской расы.
В настоящее время, когда убедительно доказаны значимые антропологические различия между финноязычными и угро-самодийскими популяциями, целесообразно поддержать вторую концепцию ареала современной уральской расы, ограничивая его только Западной Сибирью с прилегающей частью европейского (ненецкого) заполярья. По-существу, уральская раса в настоящее время выступает как буферная уральско- алтайская группа типов («раса») – промежуточных между большими расовыми стволами в Евразии (западным - европейским и восточным – азиатским монголоидным) и промежуточными комплексами сложного генезиса в Алтае-Саянах. В ее состав логично включать несколько известных комплексов (антропологически своеобразных, географически смежных, расогенетически смешанных по основному механизму образования, исторически родственных). По мировому масштабу они представляют единый переходный массив, занимающий большую часть Западной Сибири:
1) собственно уральский тип (представлен хантами и манси),
2) обь-иртышский тип (селькупы, чулымцы, часть сибирских татар, компонентом - у хакасов-кызыльцев и в ряде групп сибирских татар),
3) североуральский тип (ненцы, кроме колвинских),
4) енисейский тип (кеты),
5) переходный к южносибирскому типу («расе») – североалтайский тип по А.Р. Киму, он же урало-алтайский тип А.И. Ярхо (шорцы, компонентом в составе телеутов, северных алтайцев и части хакасов). В классификации правомерно рассматривать положение этого типа и как северную периферию ареала южносибирской расы в качестве алтае-саянского типа по терминологии В.П. Алексеева.

Racial type of the Nenets (which delineates the Northern periphery of the Ural race) is included anthropologists in its composition since the mid-twentieth century: Shluger and Cheboksarov in relation to the European tundra Nenets Small and Big Land as laponoidnye type Ural race, and Debetz and Levin as the Ural type (or race), against primarily the Asian tundra groups, including the Yenisei variant (or type) North of the Nenets of the Yamal Peninsula. S. A. Shluger himself considered the Yenisei variant as part of the South Siberian race.
At present, when significant anthropological differences between the Finno-speaking and Ugro-Samoyed populations have been convincingly proved, it is advisable to support the second concept of the area of the modern Uralic race, limiting it only to the Western one Siberia with the adjacent part of the European (Nenets) Arctic. In essence, the Uralic race currently acts as a buffer Ural-Altaic group of types ("race") – intermediate between large racial trunks in Eurasia (Western - European and East – Asian Mongoloid) and intermediate complexes of complex Genesis in the Altai-Sayans. It is logical to include several well-known complexes (anthropologically peculiar, geographically related, racogenetically mixed by the main mechanism of education, historically related). On a global scale, they represent a single transition array that occupies most of the Western part of Siberia:
1) the Ural type proper (represented by the Khanty and Mansi),
2) Ob-Irtysh type (Selkups, Chulyms, part of the Siberian Tatars, others - among the Khakass-Kyzyl people and in a number of groups of Siberian Tatars),
3) North Ural type (Nenets, except Kolvinsky),
4) Yenisei type (Kets),
5) transitional to the South Siberian type ("race") - the North Altai type according to A. R. Kim, also known as the Ural-Altaic type of A. I. Yarcho (Shors, a part of the Teleut, Northern Altaians, and part of the Khakas). In the classification, it is legitimate to consider the position of this type as the Northern periphery of the area of the South Siberian race as the Altai-Sayan type in the terminology of V. p. Alekseev.

I hadn't realized NAO and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug had different types. Maybe population genetics studies should differentiate between Nenetses from NAO and YNAO too.

One of the photos in the OP was ideal for morphing, so I tried using it in a new Nenets morph:

Eyes differ from the Asian type. Pseudo-Mongols indeed. Maybe Chinese and other East Asians are mixed Siberians and Native Americans/Inuits.

When I have made morphs of photos from VKontakte, Nenetses have ended up having a more narrow and elongated face shape than Khanty. I thought it might have been by chance, but now I noticed the same thing in these morphs of photos from Kunstkamera (http://collection.kunstkamera.ru/en/entity/OBJECT):

Khanty maybe look more similar to Kets than to Nenetses.
