One of my old man's mates was drunk in Europe some years ago and accidentally signed his life away to the Foreign Legion. I cannot remember how many years he served, but he escaped with several years service remaining.

To this day he is not allowed to travel to France or any French colony or else they'll put his arse back in there!

That is really hardcore.... Is it that easy to get into one of the most elite fighting units in the world?

1 in 25 actually make it through training, or some rediculous statistic like that. It's actually extremely hard.

I've actually contemplated it, mostly if I fail with my academic studies. But meh we'll see.

Speaking and understanding French is a requirement. ;) Mostly just simple commands and basic communication. 70% of people who show up there don't understand or speak a word of French. It's probably a real bonus for the brass not having troops that can speak fluent French, just in case there's an impossible mission the troops gotta go to, and so the troops won't understand how they're being mocked in French for being such idiots for signing up. LOL. Sorry, but you would have to be insane/suicidal to sign up. It's a meat grinder, man.

By my (formerly) estranged mother's account, my Spanish grandfather was in the FFL, before he met my grandmother in London.

Indeed his name was 'Pedro Diaz' which is rather like the Spanish version of 'John Smith', ie. a very common name, and one which you might choose if you were to take a new identity as so many of these men do.

I must research this for myself.

The reason the French foreign legion is so legendary in its military prowess is the fact that legally no French person can join it.

Also, have you noticed the legions hats (http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:OzdrSMbOkeAGUM:http://images.halloweenexpress.com/images/imagecache/293-300-gc184.jpg) have an inbuilt flag for surrendering?

The SAS eat these French speaking weirdos as they would an appetiser.

I would not say ban him, but that was beyond a bullshit statement.

it is easy to join i also heard, actually, they will even trick you into it and then make a soldier of you or whatever, i know a person that was in a Legion too, he also escaped, he signed up when he was young and change his mind rather fast.

I think I need to reread Jaime Salazar's Legion of the Lost.

A guy (1/2 French 1/2 English) I know's old man was an ethnically French Algerian (from the time it was still a part of France) and pretended to be German (I think?) in order to get into the legion so he could fight in the independence war on the French side. :D

This guy is forever smashing blokes to a pulp who cross his path so I can only imagine what the old man must have been like. I doubt that anybody will be "eating the Foreign Legion for appetizers".
