View Full Version : In your opinion, would it be correct if she claims she is from Germany?

Think of a person who is of Volga German descent. She was born, raised, live in Russia, is a Russian citizen, not a citizen of Germany yet, can speak in German but it is obviously not her native tongue. If this person claims she is from Germany, I guess it wouldn't be correct at all. However, it is of course correct if she claims her ethnic origin is German. Am I right?

Only a German nationalist like Teutone can truly answer that

With all those factors she could rightfully say "i'm german" with no hyphen, no "germano-russian" needed. Now "born in Germany" would be incorrect however.

I think it is perfectly correct.
In Korea, I have come across a few people coming from Russia who were of 100% Korean ancestry (it's not just me; Korean people had no doubts).
In their case, they were descended from people who migrated/fled when there was still a feudal system here (the serfs were emancipated in the 1890s -- 30 years after the ones in Russia, or Japan). After 120+ years, it seems amazing that many people still retained a minority-cultural identity, celebrated some Korean festivals (in small communities sometimes far from East Asia, all the way to Moscow, and in former Soviet republics, like Kazakhstan -- they ate traditional dishes, and could speak Korean to some degree. Physically Korean, culturally both, of course.

I have a question, are all the Volga-Germans in her ancestors or are they only a part? My answer is if there are more Volga-German ancestors and she was born in Russia, then she can be a German if she wants and a Russian can stay (Of course with the Volga-German ancestors). If her Volga-German ancestors are on her mother's side (while, for example, the Russians are on her father's side), then the situation is a little different. But of course she can be both German and Russian by nationality if she wants to (she has everything she needs).

Well, if someone is of a certain descent, knows the language, and identifies with that I see no problem.

There are people in the US that identify themselves as "Italian" and don't know shit about Italy or even speak the language, so if they can get away with it why not her?

Don't ask questions like that as though this stuff is somehow written in spacetime, especially with such borderline example and purposed wording. Depends, some would consider that claim legitimate, some would not, and there's no one right answer. As for me personally, I would. Those are just word games, really.

On a deeper level, this is a question about the authority of the nation-state in determining the answer to these personal things.

IMO, ethnic identity and nationality are not the same. There are lots of Indians who are not from India. Being from somewhere means to be born/raised in that country or region, in most people's perspective.

It depends on the context, heritage or citizenship, for all intents and purposes the German people are her nation and this goes beyond a geographic territory. It would be incorrect to claim she is a German (in the Federal Republic of Germany sense) national though.

Anyway, a lot of diaspora peoples think that way, especially someone who grew up in an enclave.

Hiya, Ancient or modern ? LULZ, modern is trash. G25 is overhyped and ancient is only somewhat better.

Hiya soz mate are you bloody bonkers ? Most normal people don't even know what that is. Do you have a custom ancient German calculator ? And what score is acceptable ? I have a cushty calculator for Brits that I lifted from Davidski but one would have to be a bit of a nutter or a berk to recommend it to the British government for immigration.

IMO, ethnic identity and nationality are not the same. There are lots of Indians who are not from India. Being from somewhere means to be born/raised in that country or region, in most people's perspective.

True but if you are a WASP from America, Australia, New Zealand or Canada it is less of a culture shock and easier to become British than German etc...

She's German but not from Germany. Simple.

With all those factors she could rightfully say "i'm german" with no hyphen, no "germano-russian" needed. Now "born in Germany" would be incorrect however.
