View Full Version : Why is LivingDNA so underrated

I think it's one of the best companies out there.
Been hearing really good reviews about them and how they break down even the smallest bit of trace ancestry.

Eupedia recommends them too.
They say LivingDNA sequences even more SNPs on y DNA and mtDNA than 23andMe or ftdna

Is it true or is all of this just hogwash?

They may be excellent for those from British isles.

In their estimate, they give me 16% West Balkans, that would be 1 great-grandparent. However I don't have it in my paper trail.

I see.
I was a fool to spend so much money on family tree dna simply to get my Y and mtDNA sequenced.

I don't know much about my autosomals

You weren't, FTDNA has the best Y DNA and mtDNA databses in the world.

YSEQ beats them hard.

All commerical DNA tests are trash. To know the truth do something like the following :

Hacking some shells scripts or python or perl scripts to work with :

1.) admixture
2.)plink
3.)treemix

To work with high quality academic samples that can be merged together with plink from the Estonian Biocenter, HGDP, and the 1,000 genome project etc....

or use QpAdm/admixtools2 or whatnot and really 'nerd out'.

Here is me doing the former. Results :

French : 0.000010
French Basque : 0.000010 :
German : 0.000010
Great Britain : 0.999970

^You can make something like that look pretty with graph with treemix but it is pain in the ass to get to compile , yes, I said 'compile, again extremely nerdy.

Ok, so I did not use any Irish samples etc... because I don't have time to merge them right now. I can do it later if anyone wants which I doubt.

Anyway, all this is extremely nerdy but it is the only way to know the 'truth'. This is what it looks like generating the results :

Prob because there are so many companies out there. I personally did quite like it when it first came out. It exactly pinpointed me as 20% Germanic and the rest it pegged me down as Eastern European (no specific regions were out then yet for me). Now I'm full Balkan with 8% South Euro. It completely erased my 20% German. Now I think it's a rubbish test.
