4 of my grandparents migrated from Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1950s and 1960s. I can see that they look more Northwest Balkan than my parents to and my parents look more Northwest Balkan than me. My observations tell that our family started to look more Mediterranean-like in these 2 generations. Does it have some thing to do with gene expression?
Gene expression:
"Scientists have long appreciated the role that environmental factors play in the production of traits in animals. Environmental factors such as diet, temperature, oxygen levels, humidity, light cycles, and the presence of mutagens can all impact which of an animal's genes are expressed, which ultimately affects the animal's phenotype."

What do you means by "Mediterranean-like"?
Do they looks like Arab, Levant or Sicilian?
If not... well, they don't looks like "Mediterranean".
That's it.

Its a obscurs term.
Send me a picture in private.
Which parts of Bosnia were your grandparents from? Some Bosniaks, perhaps many of them have a shit ton of Nordo-Slavic blood, no kidding. I suggest you order an FTDNA kit, it would be interesting to see a Turkish-born Bosniak's results.

Sheesh. Good thing I look Mediterranean than and not something else

But you are still classified as white, correct? You're neither black, nor mestizo, nor Middle Eastern.

I don't even know anymore. The whole "white" thing is stupid to me, if I said I was Iranian or Indian I'd be non-white on here, but since I'm Portuguese I'm white? I've thought about it for some time now and quite frankly don't care as much, just accepting that I'm a dark med type and should be proud :thumb001:

Well, if you live in the U.S., that's how people are classified in that country. Your ancestry is European if you are fully Portuguese regardless of your looks. Middle Easterners are counted as white too but I doubt most people including MEs themselves actually see them as white. I personally exclude all Muslims from whiteness but can possibly include some half-breeds or culturally Christian individuals with a light skin complexion. If that's important or necessary at all.

But you don't know how your ancestors looked further back. Your parents and grandparents already carry those Mediterranean genes, but somehow they looked not much Mediterranean. However, by random recombination of genes you got a combination of your ancestors genes which make you look Mediterranean.

Well, you see if people were able to have the magic powers to know my ethnicity, my DNA results, and everything by just looking at me then I suppose you're right. But I'm sure you know that is not how the game plays out. In my defense, I have BDD (body dysmorphia) and quite frankly it transcends into my perception of my ethnicity and old identity issues for being dark pigmentation. Growing up I never thought I didn't fit in Portugal, or southern Europe, but over time as I got older and more self-aware, and more insecure about not only my pigmentation, but believing I was ugly, I put more importance on it and I was confused for many different things, most of which I don't even recall but i know they weren't Portugal, Spain, Italy or anything really. Tbf to this, many people where I live don't know shit about Europe, let alone southern Europe... but nonetheless, I felt dissociated, and still kinda do. And that is also because those countries are home to "white" people! Lighter pigmentation, etc., but we all know these countries also have darker native people, like me, just that they are overlooked and placed as ambiguous. When I got here I made the mistake of giving my ethnicity away when I wanted to be classified and I was classified as Atlanto-med, which ofc is not true at all. I don't look atlanto anything, if I did I wouldn't be seen as off-white, or possible to fit in non-european countries. This is why I don't like the term white.

The American racial parameter of contemporary society is a joke. It includes Middle Eastern peoples as White. I know the term is very misused, so let me clarify something: the different ethnicities of Europe are a race. From north to south and from west to east, the Europeans are a diversified race. How do we know that? Because of years of scientific studies regarding genetics of Europe. Several PCAs show the same: Europeans cluster together. This is a fact. They can call us what they want: White, Europeans, horse riders, people of the West, colonizers, whatever. We are still the same racial entity. But why do we use White? Well, it's simply mainstream. Nothing more.

I can understand you. You don't look like a generic white American or a generic European for that matter. At least now you know enough about your genetic profile and genetics in general.

In the U.S./Canada most European Americans are of Northwestern and Northern European descent (British, Irish, German, French, Scandinavian, etc). Plus some Poles, Italians, etc. that have assimilated into the mainstream population to varying degrees. Some people like to bring up fringe outlier groups like the Maltese, Sami or Finno-Ugric Russians but those groups are basically irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

As far as I know, they are from Sarajevo. I am also curious about my DNA results but unfortunately I couldn't convince my parents yet. They somehow find it unsafe.
