I had to take some time out since real life was kind of getting in the way, specially at work now that we are on the verge of reopening.

Although I voted Remain and would still do so if given the chance again, a part of me does want to paraphrase de Maistre:
"There is no such thing as 'Europeans'. I have seen Frenchmen, Italians, Russians. But as for 'Europeans', I can declare I have never encountered them".

Sounds like he was JB007's previous incarnation.

EDIT: de Maistre, along with Herder, is regarded as a controversial and tainted philosopher, because his emphasis on the local and the particular is nowadays seen as the progenitor of fascist thought. (This is despite the fact that both of them hated imperialism and militarism, which were ultimately the main markers of the Nazis in particular).

Is this your personal quote? Because this is the original quote of de Maistre:

I think that it's more a think pointed to everyone he knew, not only on frenchmen, italians and russians...

Yes, I was slightly re-phrasing what he said to question the ideology of pan-Europeanism.

What you mean with that phrase[/QUOTE]
That each nation, people and language are unique, and we should stop trying to impose an artificial and nebulous 'unity'.

In his era it can be seen as an argument against universalism. He was wholly, in body and soul, against the French Revolution, and subsequently, of the exportation of said "values" to the rest of the world. For him the French constitution could only be applied on Frenchmen, not on Congoids or Inuits.
