For a country seemingly obsessed with erasing its evil past, I find it interesting why they adopted such a daunting combination of black red and yellow for their current flag. It looks super harsh and unsettling compared to most other European flags.

I see it waving outside my window a lot of the time and it looks so menacing against the clear blue sky.

Not true, thr flag is older than Weimar, todays Germany and the GDR. And certainly does not represent any political ideology.

Its based on the German resistance against Napoleon and many other nationalist movements after that.

This is the root of the Flag, the flag of the Lützowsches Freikorps we speak about 1813 AD.

I quite like the German flag, choice of colour is unique and a lot more interesting than the endless red, white, green/blue, used in most flags

There is only space for one German tricolor in my heart:

Which I suppose looks even more sinister, guess I'm just an evil bastard then.

I sorta agree, current flag is worst German flag, I don't think it was done as well as it could've been.

This should be the real flag of Germany imo.

The yellow-red-black flag is not the world's finest, it used to symbolize the democratic-liberal uprisings of 1848, but now all Germans are used to it, even right wing nationalists have decided to love it.
Then it's here to stay.

And after all, it's not that bad, given that Germany is surrounded by countries that (except Belgium) all have conventional red and white in their national flags.

Why is Belgium flag similar to German but inverted?

Why is Belgium flag similar to German but inverted?

Because Brabant (the central province of Belgium, with Brussels in the middle and both French- and Dutch-speaking districts) used to have black, yellow and red colours on their coat of arms.

Not saying the German flag looks BAD... just gives off a very sinister vibe. Otherwise it's quite powerful looking
