Thanks but no, I don't think England, Netherlands, Ireland etc need to be divided more than they currently are on Vahaduo, and the new world averages mostly shouldn't be mixed with the old world averages. I'll post the things that I'd like to be updated on Vahaduo on the thread :)

Berwickshire, East Lothian and the odd Scot are with the Northumbria. Could easily be added in a larger joined group. The official studies hinted on that anyway.

Would have had an East coast in general, but those South East Scots cast themselves off in that corner being more out there on average.

Mississippi is the only listed state to have "Irish" ("Leinster") in the top ten! It would be cool to see South Boston compared to Massachusetts. In the South, it would be cool to see if the Highlanders and the Lowlanders are different. My guess is that the former would score higher in "Scottish". With all the Dutch here, we might as well change "New York" back to "New Amsterdam".

It's because NY and Massachusetts and other places with lots of Irish also have lots of continental and Southern Euro/Jewish ancestry, which makes them more dissimilar to the Irish on average. A fully English area would be much closer to the Irish on average than say a mixed Irish and Italian area.

With ancient calculators I get high Anglo-Saxon and Germanic similarity but this is because they are my closest distance wise not that I actually descend from them. Bronze Age Irish samples like Rathlin get Scandinavian populations as their top match but on IBD the Scots, Irish and Welsh share the most with them.

It's just an example but does show what the issue is. On Gedmatch for example I'll use Daco-Celtic as an example. He is half Romanian and half Irish but will be French/German on Gedmatch. Looking at IBD though and I've seen his Ancestry test he is half Irish (and gets a Cork GC) and half Romanian.

I do think Gedmatch calculators are of value and if you understand them and have seen enough results you can get a pretty good trend. One thing I've noticed is that English are more likely to be closer to South Dutch and Belgians while Irish are closer to North Dutch and Scandinavians. This is for South-East and Southern English. I think Northern English follow more the Irish/Scottish trend.

None of the English averages on vahaduo are that close to Belgians tbh, and the distance between north/south England is pretty small, there doesn’t seem to be a meaningful distance and it seems to be more based off the individual sample if anything.

It was definitely something noted on Gedmatch in the past on the old Eurogenes. There was a trend for Southeast English to be closer to South Dutch/Belgians. There is a lot of posts of examples on many forums. With vahaduo many of the calculators have been updated by people on this forum like Creoda and others. I'm not sure what all these new calculators show but it was a trend that was the case in the older Gedmatch calculators. I also thought it made sense when you understand that the Southeast English have a southern pull different than the rest of the Isles populations and it was something that I have noticed with Gedmatch calculator results in the past.

I think you can still see the trend above. Notice that Southeast English get Belgian and Dutch South in the list while the Irish trend a bit more Scandinavian? I think that pattern is there.

It was just a trend that was noticeable. You need large samples though. There is variance in all populations and it would be wonderful if that Southeast English study gets published and hopefully this year sometime.

That's a good point, and it definitely explains the ethnic mixtures one finds in Boston and New York City. In fact, that's why I would narrow it down to South Boston (Southie). Hell's Kitchen isn't as Irish as it was in the past, but it would be interesting too. You don't find Irish enclaves now like you did in the '80s.

That aside, I'm mostly talking about states, though. I read that Massachusetts and other states had appreciable Irish populations, but, surprisingly, Mississippi was the only listed state that had "Irish" in the top ten. The North seems more Germanic than one might think. The lack of Welsh in Pennsylvania really surprised me too since so many Quakers, from Wales, settled there.

I'm a novice, to say the least. Some of these labels and scores seem counterintuitive to me when I factor in ethnic and historical facts. I gather that these are just averages of populations. Some of it can be confusing to beginners.

For instance, Southern states get more "Southeast English" (often at the top) than New England states, which get varied flavors of "Dutch". This is strange to me because Southeast English people settled in New England while Southwest English people settled in the South. I get that Southeast English people match the Dutch, but that then doesn't explain how Southern Americans get "Southeast English" much more than "Dutch". It's like A closely matches B, but C matches A without closely matching B.

My sister got 96.2% "British & Irish" on 23andme. Here's the crazy thing. She got 1.5% "Sicilian" (my name for a mix of the Mediterranean). That's more than the .6% she got for "Broadly Northwest European", and she got just 1.7% for "French & German". "Scandinavian" was extremely minimal at less than 1%.

By the way, I learned that I might descend from Grace O'Malley! I broke down a brick wall that evidently leads back to County Mayo, which is where Cromwell sent my forebear after the Civil War. That's assuming that the genealogy is right, as these things are hit or miss. I'm embarrassed to say that I once thought that your real name was Grace O'Malley. SMH

I'm a novice, to say the least. Some of these labels and scores seem counterintuitive to me when I factor in ethnic and historical facts. I gather that these are just averages of populations. Some of it can be confusing to beginners.

For instance, Southern states get more "Southeast English" (often at the top) than New England states, which get varied flavors of "Dutch". This is strange to me because Southeast English people settled in New England while Southwest English people settled in the South. I get that Southeast English people match the Dutch, but that then doesn't explain how Southern Americans get "Southeast English" much more than "Dutch". It's like A closely matches B, but C matches A without closely matching B.

My sister got 96.2% "British & Irish" on 23andme. Here's the crazy thing. She got 1.5% "Sicilian" (my name for a mix of the Mediterranean). That's more than the .6% she got for "Broadly Northwest European", and she got just 1.7% for "French & German". "Scandinavian" was extremely minimal at less than 1%.

By the way, I learned that I might descend from Grace O'Malley! I broke down a brick wall that evidently leads back to County Mayo, which is where Cromwell sent my forebear after the Civil War. That's assuming that the genealogy is right, as these things are hit or miss. I'm embarrassed to say that I once thought that your real name was Grace O'Malley. SMH

That could be. There weren't that many French and Germans in the Deep South and the Piedmont South, though. There were a good amount of Germans in parts of the Appalachians, as well as parts of Texas. Of course, there were plentiful individuals, with French ancestry, in parts of Louisiana too.

I was surprised by the fact that Mississippi was the only listed state with "Irish" in the top ten. I would have bet more on Georgia and South Carolina since both states had an appreciable Irish presence in certain cities. Travelers live in that area too (not that they would make a big genetic difference). It seems like GEDmatch is a two-edged sword as far as accuracy is concerned, but it beats a lot of junk science ripoffs out there.

Thank you. That's a very interesting summation. I have heard that most of the English that came to Australia were more from the South of England. Yes Australians can have some Continental European ancestry. I worked with a woman who had all her family in Australia from the 1800s but she also had some Swiss in there as well as Irish and English. She was also a Catholic. Possibly US Southerners have more English ancestry than what is acknowledged. I have a lot of US matches but they are mostly in the places you would expect for Irish such as Boston, NY, Chicago etc not that much in the South.
