View Full Version : Was my ancestor a Roman soldier?

It seems very probable to me.

According to this site my Y-DNA lineage came to Poland from Gaul (Gallia) during the Roman times (yellow):

http://scaledinnovation.com/gg/snpTracker.html

There is indeed evidence of Roman military presence in the Warta/Vistula Basins during the early centuries AD:

Meanwhile, when it comes to autosomal DNA: 23andMe initially gave me 5% Southern European, then they updated to 0.2%, and now 0%. LOL.

Why roman soldier? Gaul was full of Celts.
Swabia (east Germania) was full of Celts then.
I don't see a need for Romans in this case.
And btw, this tracks of hgs are bogus.

Actually since combustion engine is essentially a variation of firearm, it is WE who gave you engines, and also rockets etc.

Local Celts would probably have different subclades, especially under U152.

Even if not Celts per se, then between the year 1 and 1800 is a lot of possibilities, how gaulish guy came to Polania.
Take for example Samo. 600 CE. Gall Anonim 1100. Stoiński aka Statorius 1550. Chopin 1800. No Roman legions at all.
In XVII century in 13,000 Warsaw lived 1000 Frech people. Look here: https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francuzi_w_Polsce

Should their descendants think, they came here with roman soldiers, only because they are ignorant about how they came here?

Then there should be something in autosomes, and there is not even 0.1%. Must be ancient admixture.

Maybe Robertus Maximus during the Marcomannic Wars. BTW, could be some "Amber Road" trader too:

Vrazijadivizija

Well we all have a bunch of ancestors which probably back then were under Roman rule and most likely were serving their army no matter their origin.

Ok, the same. In 1800 years which are between supposed Romans in Lechia and you, anthing could happen.
Spanish soldiers did fight even in Moscow, so... Take unto account merchants, missionaries, or just regular
people moving here and there... There is so many surrprized movements of people, that without knowing the
real recorded history any guessing is futile. And btw, you still do not have confirmed haplogroup.

For example take unto account such scenario: some Vikings could raid Spain in 800s, take slaves, and move them to Sweden.
At 1300 swedish guy settled in Danzig. At 1600 some moved to Posen, and here you are... thinking about Roman Legions in Wartheland.

What's the YBP of your last positive allele?

You mean the TMRCA? I'm not sure, they haven't updated it yet here: https://www.ytree.net/

For FGC31068 it is 2900 YBP (according to YFull), but that's not the last positive - there is one more after this.

Probably YBP is in Roman times (I guess ca. 2000 YBP, around the beginning of Common Era).

That's why snpTracker shows "Roman".

Well we all have a bunch of ancestors which probably back then were under Roman rule and most likely were serving their army no matter their origin.

Actually they could also serve in barbarian armies opposing the Romans. Or have no contact with the Romans.

My Mexican-American match from Arizona hasn't yet uploaded his data to YFull.

He is not on YFull Tree and that's why we don't have a common subclade there.

Yseq gave me R1a-Z282>Z91>YP5000.

I am expecting for the BIG Y upgrade results (expected 06/14/2021 - 06/28/2021), because I did a Y111 and just gave me R-M198.

The obviously wrong assumption here is to expect your paternal ancestor to have had his origins in the Warta/Vistula basin at that distant time. He could have been born literally anywhere in Europe and be of any ethnicity.

To me it looks like ca. 2100-1900 years ago my ancestor had to live somewhere in the Roman Empire.

Then they expanded with Roman-related population movements somewhere into Barbaricum.

This is likely how we ended up in Britain and in Poland (presumably passing through Germania earlier).

I didn´t post it , but this Spanish flag it´s me in Ytree:

With the BIG Y I am R-YP5000>BY27340 but I´ve just the SNPs CSV file so Ytree only gave me YP5000 for now.

I have matches just with Y12 markers, all of them Polish, Baltics, Germans,Ukranians, Russians etc...
