Cumbria is the northernmost county in NW England, bordering Scotland. Much of Cumbria was historically part of Scotland.

There's one Germanic English Type in the first pic. in the front row far right.
The rest are a mix between brunn atlantid, KN, alpinized brunns or even borealized, north atlantids, Anglo-saxons...

Proves once again that, insofar as there is a phenotype/pigmentation divide, it is East/West rather than North/South.

Disagree completely. The pigmentation stats don't bear that out, and I certainly don't think people from the Northeast look more similar to the Southeast than the Northwest. It would also go against the genetic picture.

Once again, not darker-haired than Dutch people and much brighter than Germans and Northern French as a whole.

 Aside from the very high numbers of ethnic minorities in the Midlands cities, why would that be the case?

Broadly similar to the Staffordshire group but even more pale which is to be expected, for some reason they don't remind me that much of Scots though but it would be very interesting to see a farmers thread from a Scottish region for comparison. Re Tooting Carmen's comment i think he was half right by saying that there is more similarity from north to south than west to east but this really only applies as north as East Yorkshire, genetically Durham and N'umberland are more different from the SE and Staffordshire also shows a lot of Welsh borders and NW influence. https://static.independent.co.uk/s3fs-public/thumbnails/image/2015/03/18/17/v2web-genetics-map.jpg?width=990&auto=webp&quality=75

When I go to towns and cities in the West of England like Bristol, Exeter, Swindon and Gloucester, the people there look barely if at all different to the faces I see all the time in Swansea. It is only further East where the difference becomes more noticeable.

I would not be surprised if the Cotswolds has a greater proportion of Iron age types because of the outflux from London and the south east, based on your Reading threads i would say the people there are more of a cross between Staffordshire and Notts phenotypically but perhaps with greater Alpinisation and darker Brit types. Wales seems very different from the South(including Wiltshire etc) in that there is a greater CM component especially.

Believe me, the important genetic divide in England is broadly North and South of the Humber. East and West is less significant, which shouldn't be surprising as it is a narrow country. Even that image shows more of a North-South divide, only happening further North.

Just want to re-post this genetic clustering tree, which is taken from the same database as used for the POBI. Cumbria of course is with the Northeast.

Because Cumbria (and the Northeast) are intermediate between core England and Scotland.

A lot of West Border Scots went to Cumbria after the Union of Crown in 1603 when the place was deemed dangerous and cleared out. The same people who also went to Northern Ireland.

My Grandad is North Cumbrian with a Scots Border Clan surname(Little).

Interesting contrast, the Northern ones do seem to resemble the Irish more(while still being British looking) while it is hard to say who the Southerners resemble more, they don't look that much like the Northern French and don't have the facial features associated with the Flemish, maybe a cross between North British, North French and low countries people?

Don't forget Devon has a large number of people who have moved there from South East and North Eng due to better climate and being a tourist destination. Lots of wealthy people from elsewhere in Eng retire to Devon particularly.

Young farmers Devon would not show this as much though.

Great shout using farmers as a comparison btw they would represent old populations better than anyone else.

True, though it would apply less in Plymouth i would think, when i have visited there it really does feel in many ways like a Welsh or Northern town placed at the Southern end of the country both culturally and phenotypically though that may be due to naval workers who moved there historically. There are a lot of proper Devonians about, i can tell by the accent which even in Exeter is quite noticeable among the working class half of the city.

Interesting about Plymouth and I think you are right, it would have attracted local rural people for work, notwithstanding the Navy connection, it is not a tourist destination.

Cornish towns like Truro, Bodmin etc are similar, all tourists are on the coast, these towns are still full of locals and fairly poor compared to Newquay, Falmouth etc, even now. Plymouth would be similar yes. It got dunked by the Luftwaffe though, even more than Swansea, Hull etc

As someone who has family in Exeter, I can honestly say that no more than 20-25% of the people there have a (noticeable) Devon accent - it is full of students and general workers from SE England.

Great set again, i think the Devon ones are more or less similar to the ones from Essex though with less continental types(Essex has quite a few subnordids) they are much longer faced than the Bretons despite any genetic similarity.

Couldn't find a lot of pics from one Scottish area, but pics from different parts of Scotland:

As someone who has family in Exeter, I can honestly say that no more than 20-25% of the people there have a (noticeable) Devon accent - it is full of students and general workers from SE England.

Is Chris Martin a prime example of Exonians?
