I’m pretty sure not only the Muslim author quoted on their hygiene, but the Romans did as well. Why are you defending people who were once considered dirty barbarians by the Greco-Roman world? Are you a Eurocentrist? If so, at least defend the admirable ones (Greeks, Romans, Renaissance Europe, Enlightenment Europe, etc.), not the dirty barbarian tribes during pre-Medieval eras.

There are different perspective on hygiene depending on the context of hygiene.

Arabs and Persians (even before Islam) were often groomed, this continues with Islam (see medieval mosaics, Ottoman harem baths). To some extend, this is true for European pagans (Roman baths, decorated ancient Greek pictures) and it seems to hold true for Norse too.

The Christian view (Byzantine and later Western) opposes this. The one who grooms himself and baths with no reason is impure to the eyes of the god, a descorated prostitute, an imposter.

This doesn't describe hygiene as a whole though. Pagans didn't know anything of dental hygiene nor Arabs stopped drinking camel piss.

To me it is more interesting that he thinks they are much more beautiful then arabs, then that he considers them filthy. It seems universal in the world that nordics are considered to be the most beautiful and precious humans on earth even back then.

I was thinking that too. I thought Hollywood brainwashed us into thinking Nordic beauty standard is highest. But Hollywood didn’t exist back then obviously. I guess they are beautiful then.
